The Old Man and the Princess by Sean-Paul Thomas – Cover is great and almost tells the story.

“The Old Man and the Princess,” from the mind of Sean-Paul Thomas will definitely grab you from the beginning. You may think you can second-guess where this is going, but you won’t. Yeah, I know you’ve heard that before, but Sean-Paul apparently thinks out of the box and his plot is full of intrigue and plot twists.

Pegged as a mystery, thriller, and suspense, this novel has that and more; how about tension and apprehension? I love how that dark sense of Irish humor weaves in and out of the dialogue, a patter so palpable, there are snicker-filled moments–or depending on your own sense of humor, LOL opportunities.

I don’t know; reading this account, could he really be from another planet come to rescue the (16 year old) Princess Sersha? (Haven’t we been bombarded with Princess Leia? It could happen…) [Okay, shake of the head.] No, maybe Derek IS just in the throws of dementia and if so, this can’t end well as he has kidnapped this orphan from the streets of Galway from yet another unhappy foster home. And she’s had some douzies.

Given her situation, it doesn’t take too long before Helsinki Syndrome surfaces, or for the Irish baddies to catch up–THEN who you going to believe? Why in the world would the Irish mob care where either of them are heading anyway? If we are to side with Derek,  the old man, he is trying to return her to her rightful place as a Princess (but not of this world), then the bad guys are trying to prevent that.

But no, the Bad Irish Dudes are saying something very different–and they want him for a whole nother reason. So who’re you going to trust?

She sides with the old man, but is still nervous where this is going to take her. The old boy is hell bent on getting her to the far north of Scotland. It definitely has you questioning the veracity of the old man–but he is so strongly confident in his story you almost want to believe him.

Sersha is immensely sympathetic and given her background, you could accept she would be a cynic and a fighter. Dialogue is natural; though if you aren’t a native of the UK may be confronting some interesting dialects. Don’t let it stop you from enjoying the story, it merely adds to the flavor of the action–and there is plenty of that to go around.

The plot is rather unique and even were it not your normal favorite genre, you would enjoy it.

I was sent this book in exchange for a fair review. I did NOT see this one coming–that great ending was a surprise and delight and left me smiling. Recommended for readers of multiple genres, this side of the pond or that. A super thrilling tale of intrigue that keeps you guessing right up until that very satisfying ending. But don’t take my word for it, see for yourself…
