More than a celebration of harvest, it’s also evolved into a celebration of our blessings with a focus on family and community.
We in the U.S. are indeed made up of “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” It was one of my favorite authors, Amanda Hughs, who got me looking back at the odyssey of this blog with the publishing of several of my grandfather’s books. His origins are still murky.
It was our son who found some amazing connections! (He got very good on Ancestry.) One grandmother born on the Chippewa Reservation of the Cherokee Reservation of Oklahoma in Indian Territory and one grandmother born the first in this country from Sweden.
And Grandpa (aka) Stanley McShane? Who knows for sure. I’d always understood he was from Cork, Ireland, but that remains in dispute. Still, after all the years in this country, I still remember his lovely Irish brogue.
How about you? Did you get bitten by the ancestry bug?

It would be interesting to do the ancestry thing, but I don’t have the money, or even know how to do it all. … Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving! :)

Hey, Virginia,
Thanks for the shout out. What a fascinating man your grandfather was, and I love hearing about him. Yes, I did the Ancestry thing too and loved it. Although, they keep changing their findings. They told me one December I was Scandinavian, soooooo after doing a great big Scandinavian Christmas theme, they got back to me and said oh, never mind, you’re not Scandanavian after all, just Irish. P.S. I still make spritz. :)

ha! yes, it’s pretty funny isn’t it. every now and then our son sends us updates, usually on my side of the family. i’m not sure they’ve still worked it out, but my maternal grandmother was 100% Swedish (she who married Gpa Rose, aka Stanley McShane). so that’s nailed. i maintain Irish (through Gpa), tho thinking he was one of those who split to England. they can’t fool me tho–i remember that brogue.

it’s a fascinating study, isn’t it. my son has done a super job with it, but it does get expensive.
