Welcome to September! August alternately had some very hot days tempered with cool but an alarmingly little amount of rain. We normally don’t water in NWI, relying on rain. This year I had to water my tomatoes which ended up looking puny and unhappy anyway. And my fairy garden turned swamp garden became so dry the soil was cracking. Still, you can see it doesn’t look much like a desert garden either! It is, however, a work-in-progress. (Yes, the leaves are already beginning to fall.)
Spending so much time outdoors this time of year, I struggled with getting reviews posted. Perhaps you’ll remember I tried for one from Berkley that was declined and then WON Life and Other Inconveniences by Kristen Higgins from Stephanie at Stephanie’s Novel Fiction. (Or find her at #stephlvsbooks.) Holy smokes that is one riveting read! My associate reviewer, the intrepid CE, read The Plain of Jars by N. Lombardi Jr. which he absolutely loved and gave a glowing five-star review.
In spite of the time spent on my withering gardens, my count of books read in August totaled eleven, which included a biography, thrillers, historical reads, mysteries, and a humorous, LOL-worthy book by Worthen. Review links are listed below the pics.

The only one on your list that even have on my TBR is The Turn of the Key and now the Gary Sinise book. My garden grew little in the way of veggies and flowers, but it seems weeds don’t need water and they grew in abundance. Cooler nights ahead.

AH! Yeah, we usually have something, if not measurable, every 3-4 days. Not this summer.

Just home from hospital and hope to start blogging again within the next few days. Like where you are, where I live in Nova Scotia, Canada it was an alarmingly dry month. The city where I live won’t let you use the meager water supply to wash cars, water lawns, etc.
Sadly, I only read seven books in August and fear September’s number might be similar.
I’m off to check out your review of the Ruth Ware title next…

Glad you are home and doing okay–ready to get back to reading and writing. Well, where we are I can water, but it ramps up both my water and sewer bills. Still, guess I’d prefer that over losing my plants, especially those new transplants. California was the same as yours, however, only allowing water on a certain day for a prescribed period of time. Where we lived in Sacramento we were surrounded by major rivers and LOTS of water, but had to preserve to send south–as we used to say when flushing toilets–LA needs the water. :)
