My Review:

Oh, wow. I loved this audiobook. Two narrators; the young one and the nonagenarian. They were wonderful!

No doubt everyone knew about this book except myself that not only became a movie but a successful Broadway production. The prologue sets up the 90-something with his memories of the years with the Benzini Brothers—the Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It’s hard core exposé behind the scenes are probably what most people view as the reality of not only the animals but the persons involved from trainers to clowns.

And it’s not a pretty picture.

Jacob Jankowski is ready to sit his final exam as a veterinary student when his parents are killed and he discovers they pulled out all their financial stops to get him through school, leaving nothing upon their death. Indeed, the bank will take everything. With no where to live, no obvious means of support, and a bankrupt economy as well with few options, he hops aboard the first train he sees. It’s a circus train and it’s 1931.

Now, and throughout the novel, the reader is flipped from the twenty-something to the ninety-something reliving those years with the circus and his attraction to Marlena, the wife of the sadistic ringmaster owner-operator August. The introduction of Rosie the elephant comes late into the book just about the time I was beginning to wonder when she would appear.

The author weaves a raw, emotional story of the young man as he gradually meets and gets to know the characters of the circus and the animals whom he is now charged with their care. The compelling characters are outstanding, well developed, come alive through the voices and their varied positions within the circus.

No, I never saw the 2011 movie with Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, and Christopher Waltz, but now that it’s on my radar, I will. I’m a big fan of both Witherspoon (who performed all her own stunts) and Waltz, an amazing actor who nails his parts so convincingly you want to kill him bare-handed.

Yes, it’s frankly honest, can be cruel and disturbing. But the tale it tells is mesmerizing, page-turning, and tension-filled right up until the rewarding denouement. If you haven’t had the opportunity to read or listen (the latter of which I’d highly recommend), now is the time. Already read it? Did you love it? Or not. I’d love to know.

I loved it for a while, but alas, the AI freebies are over (used my free credits) both on Canva and Gemini. Now I’m back to sampling Freepik—without much luck. The background of the bookcase below is a sample, but obviously not very close to my description of the picture I’d envisioned. Must admit, Gemini came closer to creating the images I wanted, but it too is bye-bye. I used to try to use only those pictures I originated, my pictures or designs. That’s no longer working. Got a source you like? What is your favorite go-to for images?

February is a short one and it flew by. I used to love March. Spring. Warmer weather. New growth, babies. Promise. Of course, for me, it’s also birthday month and as usual the body is saying one thing and the mind another. It’s a clash of wills but it may be the body who wins and both the CE and I are beginning to make more of those dreaded trips to the doc. We used to joke we’d need a car only for groceries and doctor visits. Ugh. Not so funny anymore, but that’s where some of our reading time went.

I’m still using Goodreads to find good audiobooks, as well as blogger buddy suggestions. My library has most of what I look for but it’s amazing the number of books that are on waiting lists despite having numerous copies. Of course, I still find books at NetGalley, as well as author and publisher requests.

We managed ten reviews between us in February that included four audiobooks. As always, the links on titles are to our reviews that include purchase or source information.

Favorite Book of the Month

WOW, it was a tough one this month! A number of them could have been five-star reads from either of us, but despite a small issue that may have knocked off a half-star, the story was still outstanding. Included in the month—several memoirs! In particular though, This American Woman—super, Guardian of the Crossroads—excellent, and Gathering Mist—love the dogs—really ticked off all the boxes. Zarna Garg has an amazing view of issues—some alien to mine but always with a sense of humor. Melanie Forde definitely pushed outside of her familiar family sagas. This one deeper, darker than I’d seen before and it worked, leaving me slack-jawed. Most readers have sampled Margaret Mizushima’s books. Always good, fast paced, and informative. So which one gets the coveted Rosepoint nod?

My Review:

It’s always fun to get the down low on our celebrities. I always wonder how they got their start. Born with a silver spoon or gagging on mush for the twentieth day? In this case, she appears to have experienced a bit of both.

First, I marveled that as a girl of her generation, she was given the opportunity for college when most women were not expected to have more than a high school education if that. That generation would not waste an education on someone whose role was expected to be a wife and mother.

There certainly was a drive in her, however, in that her father worked heavily in the entertainment business. Lou Walters, who managed during tough financial times in the US, created the sensational Latin Quarter Nightclub in New York. Originally from London, his nightclub was a sensational hit. And then it wasn’t. Feast or famine. And insecurity.

But, yes, as with any who finally makes it to the top, there was a combination of luck, timing, and hard, hard work—willing to take on anything. And back then, a woman in that industry was expected to do little more than fetch coffee.

In her sixty-five years in the industry, as a journalist, she interviewed anyone and everyone. The famous and infamous. Newsworthy. News reporter, co-anchor, and anchor. Television personality, appearing and/or creating topical talk shows. I must admit that I didn’t watch The View, but did enjoy 20/20 and her interviews.

At almost twenty-seven hours of an audiobook, translating to more than 628 Kindle or print pages, you can imagine she didn’t leave anyone out of her book. Less you believe I didn’t pound through all that, I’ll admit there were more than a few dry areas, then jerking back into someone of interest. Enough that there would be someone of interest to a wide range audience.

Her love life, affairs, and marriages? Gees, Barbara, TMI.

Still, there were a number of quotables and I found it fascinating that she vacillated so much over decisions. Indeed, one of my favorites:

“On my gravestone I want inscribed maybe, on the other hand, I should have lived.”

Obviously, something may have made the decision for her. She passed away in 2022.

She may possibly have reduced this book by half if she had not expanded on the story of most everyone she cited. Granted, they were all notable, maybe some more than others. Somehow, though, this reader hung in there for every new celebrity by speeding up the audiobook pace or I’d still be listening to it.

My Review:

Once again, confirmation that fame and fortune can be tragic. I do appreciate that we had Riley’s voice of calm reason and reflection to add to the tale and, of course, Julia Roberts (yes, Julia Roberts) narrates Lisa Marie’s portion of the audiobook. There were intermittent bursts of taped narrative by Lisa Marie as she attempted to recall and write her memoir. Unfortunately, for the most part, I was unable to understand them.

Of course Lisa Marie was Priscilla’s daughter and the only Elvis offspring. I greatly enjoyed the memories of her early childhood, stories of Graceland. But Lisa Marie had little adult supervision and is allowed free rein and she uses it in her teens to begin experimentation with booze and drugs.

As an adult, Lisa Marie finds love; Danny Keough (Riley’s father), compulsiveness, and a wide range of men from Michael Jackson to Nicholas Cage. (Riley, btw, is now the sole trustee of Graceland. Riley played a credible Daisy Jones in Daisy Jones and the Six in 2023.)

Yes, there is a lot of name dropping, they certainly ran in the inner circles which only confounded Lisa Marie’s place in life even more—was she merely a shadow of her father carrying his name? Her memories of him were loving and impactful, his early death a blow from which she only gradually lived with, but not well.

Priscilla Presley is painted as a stern, hands-off mother and figures in the book probably about the same way she did in Lisa Marie’s life—almost as a footnote. Riley does a good job using her mother’s tapes and memories to fill in the blanks and does so with a loving perspective. While her mother became deeply flawed and she lost her brother largely as a result, she struggles to tell their stories truthfully. She believes this is the way it was. A fine tribute to her mother as she completed the memoir her mother left upon her death in January of 2023.

I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts. It’s sad, tragic, and a grim epitaph.

My Review:

Connie, as she did with her journalistic endeavors, tells it like it is. Sometimes warts and all. She explains her father’s position and the times her family lived under in China that was instrumental in moving her family to America and her birth here. Interesting childhood and background in Chinese traditional culture. Connie appeared driven early, fortune and timing steering her into ever-increasing opportunities but she had two large blocks to the glass ceiling: she is a girl (gasp!) and a minority.

Not just driven, but smart, she watched how the men conducted themselves and worked to emulate them. Coming from her background, she was shy and quiet. She had to learn to dump both as there were few men willing to accept women in their domain. As a rookie reporter, and a woman to boot, she was given fluff assignments when she was itching to gather real stories that made a difference.

Connie details the years with the different networks, the assignments, her accomplishments, her interviews, and the clashes with Newt Gingrich and Dan Rather. She reports what really happened and then defends her position. There were a number of occasions that recounted both sexism and racism in her dealings with the good ole boys club. The armor she wore got thicker as the years passed in the industry.

Connie also mentions the graphic story of responding many years later to her own experience with the “you too” movement as well as the men she welcomed into her life, including the long-distance relationship she formed with Maury Povich who would finally become her husband. The account of their struggle with infertility hits home; for them with the adoption of son Matthew. And I must say, her stories of Povich have me seeing him with different eyes and a great deal more respect.

After the years of crashing the glass ceiling, her storyline chills a bit and the pace slows. Still, I enjoyed hearing so much “inside” info in the news biz, knew it was cut-throat, and a battle only for the very strong. She was obviously that strong.

I borrowed the audiobook from my library and love it when the memoir is narrated by the author. So much fun to actually hear the voice behind those words and adds such depth to the book for me. These are my honest thoughts and think you’ll also enjoy.

My Review:

Has the drama and trauma experienced by Griffin Dunne in his life been fully exposed in his memoir?

I’m torn.

Is this memoir truly a tell all, name-dropping exposé of his life, or a bid to one up his dad? I’m not sure. Griffin details a childhood full of the growth of his father’s career that led to their Hollywood experience and the introduction to a myriad list of well-known celebrities. Most of the time it felt like he was actively grabbing the coattails of one or the other of his family or his latest squeeze using everyone as a stepping stone to something bigger and better.

He discusses his aunt, author Joan Didion, and his “soulmate” Carrie Fisher (I wondered if she knew she was his soulmate and, of course, is no longer around to dispute that. I read her memoir as well and just don’t remember mention of him). Carrie did an amazing job, not just with her writing style, wit, and often sarcastic delivery, but the overall story she had to tell.

Griffin exhibits a sense of humor, but not the delivery, and his focus is different, remembering anecdotes of the many celebrities who passed through his life. He decries his father using the violent death of his sister, Dominique, as a springboard for his newly discovered writing career, but then devotes a large portion of his own book to reviewing the sensational trial of the ex-boyfriend who murdered her and the accompanying appalling loss of justice.

Dunne writes of his sexual exploits, detailing a few, while exposing his newly clean and sober closeted father. The reason for the name of the book is touched upon only briefly well into the book and I’m not sure is relevant–to the reader anyway.

I both enjoyed and found parts of his novel disturbing and I don’t think you’ll find a lot here that would be a surprise. I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

My Review:

I really like the way the authors suffuse the professional with the personal. So many times, we see a technician going about their business and wonder what their home life looks like: six kids, a spouse equally harried, and a mortgage whose interest rates keep climbing?

In this case, Clay Edison is a new papa. The baby, as most, doesn’t sleep. Clay is working the graveyard shift so his wife can be home and she works days. It should work—doesn’t always.

Unfortunately, his call out is to the discovery of a very old skeleton—that of a small child. Whose? And how did it come to be buried in a park?

Clay might be the personification of a new dad, his baby girl Charlotte has a lot to teach him. The stark difference between his anxious self and his professional self is often laid bare by his self-talk, his first person POV.

The development of the characters in this series has been fun, and each new installment has brought growth and get-to-know-you sessions. I like Clay. He’s smart, dominating, and a strong personage around his peers, though he can be soft and sympathetic with the loved ones he must deal with in his professional capacity.

It doesn’t help that the park and the site of the skeleton is located in Berkeley, always a hotbed of political turmoil and protests. He may have a major development in the phone call from a man claiming that it may be his sister…but he can only supply a minimal amount of background to interest Clay further into the investigation.

The storyline wavers a bit with a couple of small branches off the main plot, but then I wouldn’t expect this would be Clay’s only case. It might create a slight lull in the pacing of the main plot, but there is always another tiny clue.

I’m not sure it would be classified as a slow-burn story as there is usually a lot going on and the characters, including Clay’s wife, Amy, supply a lot of lively dialogue. (I still haven’t warmed up to Amy though.) Of course, the flashbacks to the 60’s and 70’s drew me in. There are twists, divulged secrets, and evil doers as these things are never just simple straight forward…who is the skeleton.

Personally, I really enjoyed the novel and this series, one to go (Book 2), and just got it. I’ll recommend again. If you haven’t checked out this series yet and you found Alex Delaware a bit stodgy at times, you might find the collaboration between this father and son might be just what you were looking for.

My Review:

It’s a story that hits too close to home for Clay Edison, Deputy of the County Coroner’s Office. He is sent to the home of a dead man but is jolted when he spots his brother’s car in the garage. It’s not like he can point that out without severe repercussions for his brother as he is not that long out of prison. With his brother’s track record, he is torn between wanting to believe he had nothing to do with the deceased, but…

In the meantime, he needs to talk to Luke and that’s the rub. Luke is not answering his phone and his wife is not exactly coming forth with the why or how of him going missing.

I like the character of Clay and we get to learn about him in this installment, as well as peek into his fatherhood role. He continues to push the boundaries of his job description and in this installment is well over propriety. There are also some strong, well developed support characters, but I’m not a huge fan of his wife, Amy.

I actually started this series with Book 1, Crime Scene. Yeah, I know what you are thinking, how very unusual! True. I was a solid fan of Kellerman’s Alex Delaware novels, so I did have some experience with Jonathan and Book 1 definitely hooked me, not only with the premise of the protagonist coming from a different angle into the investigation, but also totally loved the narrator, Dennis Boutsikaris. His delivery is extremely dynamic providing realistic dialogue between characters. So yeah, as mentioned in my review of Crime Scene, I got on the wait list for Books 2, 3, 4, and 5. Well, these popped up first. (At this point, don’t you know I’m compelled to complete the entire series.)

There are some twists and I do enjoy the authors writing style. Their collaboration produces an interesting plot, if not entirely unique, lively and well paced.

My Review:

Ugh! I hate it when the main character totally changes everything, well, almost, as somewhere between Books 4 and 5, Clay Edison goes from being a County Coroner to a PI. Wha??? I signed up because I thought he was going to do forensics stuff. Nope, now he is the guy with a license (not badges). And as if he ever did, no longer worries about rules or laws.

Eager to take on new cases, he is looking into what might be a real estate fraud for a client. There are some intriguing unanswered questions, and failing to get enough info online or research decides he must drive to Swan’s Landing. The little town is remotely located on the Lost Coast of California, barely accessible on the roughest of roads and goat trails or by boat. Few inhabitants or services are available and the simple real estate fraud case begins to split into a suspenseful sub-plot.

The Kellermans take their time building the plot amid a masterfully painted description of the desolation and wild mountains on the rugged northern coast of California. (And I might add—as wild and beautiful as it is remote.) Equally well developed are the local inhabitants, unique, each viewing Edison as an outsider.

The storyline is finely paced, allowing the reader to savor the building tension with the discovery of each new piece of information. While my heart sank just a bit in the denouement, all loose threads were creatively woven into place.

It’s the fifth in the series, not sure there’ll be a sixth, although if there is, I’ll be there to sign up. In the meantime, look for future reviews of Books 2 and 3 when I get them. Book 5 might well be read as a standalone—he switched jobs—but not personality and there is a few backstories filling in blanks. Still, you might wish to read Clay Edison the coroner as well as Edison the PI just to get a flavor of the change in depth of the storyline.
