His Review:

A bright young student is found dead at the bottom of the town’s defunct water tower. Josie, one of the town’s high school teachers, found her during one of her sleepless nights’ sojourns. Was she a victim of foul play or a suicide? Josie seems to recall someone on the tower at the time of her death, but one of the town’s most influential citizens, the girl’s father, has the investigation curtailed!

Josie had left her small hometown to become a celebrated thespian in the Hollywood Hills environs. She returned to her hometown to teach high school and become reacquainted with her former classmates. She is well-liked by all of her students but is devastated by the apparent suicide.

How could the girl’s father not want the truth about his daughter’s death?

This story has many intriguing plot twists which kept me on my toes and flipping pages. I felt I needed a scorecard to keep track of the male interests in Josie’s life. Her entanglement in the death of the student pushes her beyond the normal pressures of everyday life. Can her life be in danger because of her desire to know the truth about the student’s death and the possible subsequent coverup? Read and enjoy! 4.5 stars – CE Williams

My Review:

Well, yucky! Eck. Obviously a sucker for a cover with a dog and the promise of a working K-9 in the story and I’m hooked again, despite the initial trepidation of the glossy guy with an obvious six-pack under that sweaty t-shirt. I knew better but signed up anyway. That’s on me.

Of course, the blurb sounded interesting as well. A CIA analyst, Trista Gold knows a computer inside and out. She can surf with the best, analyzing top-secret code, but apparently as brilliant as she is, didn’t understand her hacking was being hacked. Until that is, there are repeated attempts on her life. Oops.

Enter super sexy, way over-the-top CIA K-9 officer Sgt. Matt Connors in all his glorious 6’ and hyper-studly knighthood with the dog. He’s so HOT. Trista is panting. But tiny, mousey Trista knows he couldn’t possibly be interested in a mouse like herself, so she’ll pant in silence. Might be a good thing cause he has issues. BIG issues.

Oh, good grief. How did I get myself into this?

Let’s see: She’s terrified of dogs, but he has one. No prob. He’ll introduce the dog to her and she’ll come to love it. He has six buddies, all studly and super HOT, and ALL have dogs. No prob. She has come to love dogs.

The cop is breast obsessed (and she has a couple) which turns him into a HOT beast who has to fight himself to stay away from her. Not. The reader gets a graphic description of his bodily reaction to her. Gross. But he sees the inner beauty in her that he’ll bring out and she’ll become everyone’s tiny but blond curvy darling (no doubt unpinning her bun and removing her glasses).

Did they ever stick to business and figure out who is trying to kill her? Could it possibly have been in connection to her job? Nah. Gotta be something else, huh? Does the dog get to do his thing and rescue the damsel in distress? Oh yeah. And what of the other HOT guys—all 6’ and gorgeous examples of manhood. Will this thirty-something mouse lose her virginity and turn into an accomplished vixen between the sheets?

UGH. Who cares?

I received a copy of this book from my local library that in no way influenced this review. These are my own honest thoughts and opinions.

My Review:

One of my favorite series and the one that has me planning a trip to Bar Harbor. (I’ll be looking for lobster.) Julia lives with her sister and mother where they annually set up a clambake with hungry customers ferried in on a set schedule.

In this installment, a friend of her mother went missing five years previous and has now been declared dead. There is to be a memorial service on the small island where she lived and is said to have gone missing following her routine afternoon swim. Something goes weird, however, when Julia’s mother, who has been declared executor of the will reunites with the group.

First, it doesn’t make sense that she was named executor as they had not been close in years. The will involves a complicated division of property and Jacqueline calls on Julia for help in going through everything and delivering what she can to the appropriate recipients.

In the meantime, there are twists and turns, the group with which Jacqueline was involved is quirky, harboring secrets, and obviously hiding clues to her friend’s disappearance as well as an earlier death deemed accidental—not. The storyline goes complicated with sub-stories.

As always, the characters come to life, the support characters both good and bad. There is a new boyfriend for which we’ll reserve judgment. It’s not the complex storyline delivered before as in Installment 9, Shucked Apart. Perhaps I missed the clambake on their Busman’s Harbor property. The mystery and suspense weren’t quite as strong this time.

Still, it’s a lovely series, entertaining, fun and fast read and I’m always looking for the next one.

My Review:

Okay, yes, I’m up for an occasional biography, but must admit I picked this one up strictly because I liked the narrator in a recent audiobook called Plum Island by Nelson DeMille. (And BTW, this audiobook garners the #1, 2, and 4 spots in the genres noted below I’m sure in part due to this narrator whose own bio of narrations is as impressive as extensive.)

So imagine my surprise when I realized I’d bitten into an almost 42-hour biography. (That pretty much covered our recent trip to Texas and back.)

A lot of information here that you don’t get from the textbooks, from Washington’s childhood through the French and Indian Wars, as leader of the Continental Army, General of the American Revolution, and finally his long and storied political life as our first President.

Let’s just say, once again, that I’m incredulous that we won that war after seven bloody years. Yes, we didn’t have the capability of sending timely messages then, but again and again, he was stymied by the lack of funds for food, clothing, and munitions much less than medical care for an untrained army easily susceptible to disease and unpredictable weather. And really, against even Loyalists, many of whom still staunchly refused any aid.

Perhaps it was a bit of prejudice against John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, but it wasn’t long before I was also glad it was Washington who took control and created the system we have today—Washington supporting a new government that featured a strong executive branch.

Difficult to put yourself back in the eighteenth century and at times seemed the same for the author, particularly in terms of slavery, the topic of which he revisited a number of times painting Washington as a benevolent master who alternately struggled with the necessity at Mt. Vernon while bowing to the pressures of those strongly in support of the system. He hoped it would fade away and manumitted his slaves upon his death.

Washington did not have the benefit of an extensive education and was ever cognizant of those men around him who did. He confronted constant conflict with forming the fragile infant government, his manipulative vindictive unsupportive mother, ever-present teeth issues, foreign policy issues, and his lack of financial expertise in handling his own estate.

For all his flaws, he still proved an exceptional leader, his 6’ frame and inspiring and remarkable history commanding a hush of respect from the people. There were times when the chronology stepped back depending on the current discussion, repeated insightful observances of the expertise with which he handled situations and people, and sought to drive home a point previously made.

Perhaps the book could have been shorter and we’d have been just as impressed with the man who finally, adamantly refused another term and died two years following his retirement of a throat infection in 1799 that was treated at the time with multiple bleedings and an enema.

I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

His Review:

The “Silent Service” utilizes vessels which ply the sea in secret. Clandestine voyages are essential for the security and safety of every country. Russia has a very sophisticated submarine service. Their equipment and ships are comparable to the United States in many respects. This novel touches upon these services.

The Sea of Okhotsk is considered by Russia to be within their sovereign territory. The United States maintains the 12 mile limit and considers any water beyond the 12 mile limit of any country to be international waters. Russia considers their limit to be 150 miles from their shores. The above-mentioned sea is totally surrounded by Russian lands and is therefore considered part of Mother Russia. Our submarines go into these waters often to monitor our potential enemy.

Henrietta Foster is the Commander of the submarine Gato which routinely enters this sea to protect U.S. interests and to monitor Russian shipping. Russia is not happy about this event. Gato wants to identify some of the more modern anti-submarine warfare systems aboard the Russian submarines. Acoustical equipment can identify most ships around the world by the sounds of the machinery and equipment on the craft.

The Seventh Fleet sends in a task force to test the responses of the Russians. The potential for catastrophic responses by both sides is always a factor. These writers illuminate the problem very well and the novel presents the ever-present danger. I found this book intriguing and exciting as the situation unfolded. I recommend it to anyone interested in world affairs and naval tactics. 5 stars – CE Williams

George Wallace [Goodreads] Born and raised in Eastern Ohio, Commander Wallace received his commission in the US Navy and a degree in engineering from The Ohio State University. After the obligatory and memorable interview with Admiral Rickover, he was accepted into the nuclear power and submarine communities. He served on two of Admiral Rickover’s famous “Forty One for Freedom”, the USS John Adams SSBN 620 and the USS Woodrow Wilson SSBN 624, during which time he made nine one-hundred-day deterrent patrols through the height of the Cold War.

Commander Wallace served as Executive Officer on the Sturgeon class nuclear attack submarine Spadefish. Spadefish and all her sisters were decommissioned during the downsizing that occurred in the 1990′s. The passing of that great ship served as the inspiration for “Final Bearing.”

Commander Wallace then commanded the Los Angeles class nuclear attack submarine USS Houston SSN 713 from February 1990 to August 1992. During this tour of duty he worked extensively with the SEAL community developing SEAL/submarine tactics. Under his command, the Houston was awarded the CIA Meritorious Unit Citation.

Commander George Wallace retired to the civilian business world in 1995, after twenty-two years of service on nuclear submarines.

April was a month of crazy temps reaching from freezing temps to the low 80s. Of course, I put my potted plants out during the 80s only to have the last week of April revert to freeze warnings. In any case, it’s going to be a while before I try to start my annual veggie garden. Thinking I’ll keep it simple this year with the dominant crop as always cherry tomatoes. Dried, they are better than candy!

We took a more relaxed pace in April which appeared to have also slowed our reading-reviewing activity. We read or listened to thirteen books in April, NetGalley books as well as audiobooks. (As always, links below are to my reviews that include purchase info.)

Favorite Book of the Month

Okay, I have to give it to Harry. I really enjoyed his memoir, certainly as he read his own work. This could be followed closely by Plum Island—opening my eyes to a new author I can follow.

My Book of the Month for April—Spare.

Blogger Post

I did get to do a little blog hopping in April and always appreciate the varied posts of Lynne at Fictionophile as well as her beautiful graphics. She also offers a number of features that will interest you from “Cover Love” to “Wednesday’s Word.” If you read many book review blogs, I’m sure you’ve already found her delightful site, but if not, it’s time to check it out.

My Reading Challenges page… I have 48 books of a goal of 145 in Goodreads (three books ahead of schedule) and still keeping a 97% feedback ratio in NetGalley. Lagging behind on the others again but hope to have the page and challenges caught up shortly.

Once again, I’m bumping up against the Happiness Engineers at WordPress. Used to be I could jump on a chat but that went bye-bye. Then it was send an email, but I wonder if you’ve discovered it’s getting increasingly difficult to even find the help link. I wrote recently asking about where I could find my broken links. Pam wrote back several days later:

“While access to email support starts with the Personal plan, being on the Free plan you have unlimited access to our community forums, where you’ll be able to find answers to your questions.”

OOH…And no, there isn’t any answers to my questions in the Forum. I view it as a campaign to eliminate their free users. I realize I don’t know what I don’t know and had checked with Semrush for a (free) site audit. Have you subscribed to any SEO tool? Well, mercy, I have some fixin’ to do—if I only knew how! Google Analytics (again) doesn’t help with a free site. So I’d request that if you click on a link and it’s broken, please let me know. I’m trying what other suggestions Semrush pointed out, but it’s a struggle. It appears I’m going to have to upgrade shortly but not sure the “personal” plan would make me any happier with the engineers.

His Review:

Discovering a body in an alley can be a very inconvenient event. Calling the police to report the event casts the net of suspicion over you. Sophie identified the body as belonging to Mr. Townsend.

His widow, eager to get his affairs in order and the will settled asked for an immediate release of the body and subsequent cremation! One day later the ashes were delivered back to the widow and the case closed!

Sophie was certain of her identification of the victim, but doubt was cast on her veracity. Is it possible the judge could have been misidentified? Cremated remains are hard to get identification from and so the will was in the process of being settled.

Sophie’s childhood sweetheart has become a Catholic priest and a confidant. Father Jack is trying to help her through this tough situation but there are too many sticking points. Will they be able to confirm the identity of the deceased even over the objections of the spouse who does not want probate to drag on? Read this book and enjoy the twists and turns. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

I always enjoyed the author’s wine country cozy mysteries, the last being The Vineyard Victims, and thought this time the CE might enjoy her book from a more serious series.
