Brimstone Hollow - Archer Sullivan

Book Blurb:

Following her powerful debut in The Witch’s Orchard, private investigator Annie Gore returns in Brimstone Hollow, bringing readers back to the mountains that author Archer Sullivan, a ninth-generation Appalachian, knows so well.

There isn’t much that happens in the Appalachian Mountains that Private Investigator Annie Gore hasn’t seen. Before she was an Air Force Special Investigator, she was born and raised in those rolling hills, and lately Annie’s cases have called her away from her Louisville office and closer to the small towns of her youth than she ever anticipated. But when her newest client asks if she’s ever been to a snake-handling church, Annie knows she’s about to enter unknown territory.

Katie May has been estranged from her father—one of Appalachia’s last infamous snake handling preachers—for twenty years. But when Katie finds out he’s been fatally bitten, and a funeral was held within twenty-four hours, she questions whether someone deliberately rushed the process. Despite Annie’s doubts, she takes the case. After all, when she looks at Katie, she sees a version of herself: a girl who needs to understand her father in order to understand herself.

As she navigates the hidden hollers and dangerous secrets of this insular Eastern Kentucky town, Annie works fast, hoping to find the truth in record time for her client—and before too many memories from her own childhood surface. But it soon becomes apparent that someone wants Annie’s investigation to stop—by any means necessary.

His Review:

Brimstone Hollow by Archer SullivanAnnie Gore has been a police officer and investigator but is now on her own in private business. A distraught girl has been estranged from her father for over 20 years but needs to get in touch with him. She hires Annie to investigate and locate her father. He happens to be a very famous snake-charming evangelist. His church is located near Brimstone Hollow.

She teams up with Detective Dishman of the Brimstone Hollow Police Department but things go south very fast. People associated with Annie’s father wind up being murdered. The plot thickens as there are now three bodies! Meanwhile, the preacher is away giving tent ministry displays in another county. When he returns to the church, disaster happens. What can Annie report back to the minister’s daughter regarding her father?

C E WilliamsThis story has a whirlpool effect as everyone associated with the pastor seems to be winding up dead or a very viable suspect. The author has woven a very intricate plot with sharp turns and deaths whenever someone gets too close to the church and its’ pastor. Read and enjoy, it is a well contrived story. 4.5 stars –  CE Williams

Iron Curtain by Russ Stone

Travis Delta Thrillers Book 5

Rosepoint Publishing: Five Stars 5 stars

Book Blurb:

The most dangerous man in America just became its only hope.

Travis Delta is the U.S. government’s most lethal black-ops operative—until an Air Force missile destroys his Alaskan cabin and he finds himself at the top of a kill list issued by the very country he has fought so hard to protect.

To survive, Delta must trek through forty miles of frozen wilderness while his own military hunts him down. And he is truly alone, because the order to eliminate him has come straight from the Oval Office.

President Arlan Patterson has been compromised by the Russians. To survive politically, he must comply with orders from Russian President Yuri Morozov. And Morozov wants Delta dead.

Pursued by the world’s most powerful military, Delta realizes that running isn’t enough. Despite the overwhelming odds, he’s going to have to take the fight to his enemies. To save himself—and his country—he’ll have to assassinate Morozov.

From the frozen Alaskan wastes to an elite Russian ski resort, Iron Curtain is a relentless thriller about one man’s fight to end a conspiracy that stretches all the way to the highest office in the land.

His Review:

International relations can be very dangerous to everybody, particularly the leaders. An American President is invited to Russia to spend a weekend in Sochi, skiing with the Russian Premier. The president’s wife hates skiing and Russia, so he must go alone. What could go wrong?

Many Russian women are absolutely beautiful, particularly when they are young. The chance to enjoy carefree nights away from the prying eyes of the media is too great and so our President decides to enjoy a little furlough from his wife and all of the governmental attaches that go along with his trips.

Iron Curtain by Russ StoneThe people in our government who are opposed to his high-handed policies seem to be winding up missing. A special encampment has been set up for them in the desert of New Mexico. He is trying to decide whether he should simply dispatch them or keep them isolated while he changes the constitution. His first move will be to simply declare a national emergency and then have a small group of his cronies allow him to have his way with the country.

Travis Delta sees the quandary that the US President is facing. His attempts to rewrite the constitution would effectively wipe out all civil liberties and the America as he currently sees it. The President is nothing more than a puppet for a very corrupt Premier. His life depends upon stopping the President and returning our government to three separate and distinct units. The Executive, Judicial, and Legislative! But Travis has been marked for extinction by both leaders.

C E WilliamsThis book follows the fears of many in our country who watch the President bypass the Constitution and utilize the military for his own purposes. The world quakes as these two put their heads together and decide how a new global government will operate. Read and enjoy! 5 stars – CE Williams

The Burning Soul by John Connolly

Book 10 of 23: A Charlie Parker Thriller

I am reviewing this audiobook for Reading Ireland Month. It is hosted by Cathy at 746 Books. Please use the hashtags #readingirelandmonth26 or #begorrathon if you choose to participate. Today I am presenting a review by the CE.

Book Blurb:

New York Times bestselling author John Connolly brings his “visionary brand of neo-noir” (The Irish Times) to this “riveting and chilling” (San Francisco Examiner) thriller in the Charlie Parker series about buried secrets and haunted lives.

There are some truths so terrible that they should not be spoken aloud. Here is one of those truths: after three hours, the abduction of a child is routinely treated as a homicide.

When a girl goes missing from a small Maine town, her neighbor—a recluse named Randall Haight—begins receiving anonymous letters referencing a different teenage girl, murdered years ago. Unknown to many, Randall has been hiding a secret: at fourteen, he was convicted of killing that girl. Now, his past resurfaces, and he hires private detective Charlie Parker to make the torment stop.

But in a town built on blood and shadowed by old ghosts, where too many of the living are hiding secrets, the past cannot be dismissed so easily. As Parker unravels a twisted, violent history involving a doomed mobster and his enemies, the police, and the FBI, his search returns again and again to Randall Haight. Because Randall is still telling lies…

His Review:

The Burning Soul - UK cover
The Burning Soul – UK cover

This book focuses on three lives forever destroyed by a stupid act. The loss of a vibrant young girl’s life was the beginning of the loss. The two young killers destroyed their own lives then as surely as they ended hers. The years spent in juvenile detention certainly did not offset the life ended. However, their sentence does not end there!

The Burning Soul - Goodreads cover
The Burning Soul – Goodreads cover

At the age of maturity, they are then subjected to changes of names, identities and sent to different cities to start new lives. The problem is that some know the location of their release. Their imprisonment does not erase the public’s memory of the crime and does not exonerate them. The memory of the public is long and unforgiving.

C E WilliamsA slow burn start, there were some passages that dawdled as well, and slowed the progression of the story. It was difficult at times to stay focused on the storyline.

I found myself unable to forgive the crime or the criminals. There is no way to forget the loss of life or the potential loss of what that might have meant. Relocation and changes of identity do not erase a criminal’s past. The book has a very thought-provoking theme and raises more questions in me than answers. 4 stars – CE Williams

John Connolly - author
John Connolly – author

The Author: I was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1968 and have, at various points in his life, worked as a journalist, a barman, a local government official, a waiter and a “gofer” at Harrods department store in London. I studied English in Trinity College, Dublin and journalism at Dublin City University, subsequently spending five years working as a freelance journalist for The Irish Times newspaper, to which I continue to contribute, although not as often as I would like. I still try to interview a few authors every year, mainly writers whose work I like, although I’ve occasionally interviewed people for the paper simply because I thought they might be quirky or interesting. All of those interviews have been posted to my website, http://www.johnconnollybooks.com.

I was working as a journalist when I began work on my first novel. Like a lot of journalists, I think I entered the trade because I loved to write, and it was one of the few ways I thought I could be paid to do what I loved. But there is a difference between being a writer and a journalist, and I was certainly a poorer journalist than I am a writer (and I make no great claims for myself in either field.) I got quite frustrated with journalism, which probably gave me the impetus to start work on the novel. That book, Every Dead Thing, took about five years to write and was eventually published in 1999. It introduced the character of Charlie Parker, a former policeman hunting the killer of his wife and daughter. Dark Hollow, the second Parker novel, followed in 2000. The third Parker novel, The Killing Kind, was published in 2001, with The White Road following in 2002. In 2003, I published my fifth novel – and first stand-alone book – Bad Men. In 2004, Nocturnes, a collection of novellas and short stories, was added to the list, and 2005 marked the publication of the fifth Charlie Parker novel, The Black Angel. In 2006, The Book of Lost Things, my first non-mystery novel, was published.

Charlie Parker has since appeared in five additional novels: The Unquiet, The Reapers (where he plays a secondary role to his associates, Louis and Angel), The Lovers, The Whisperers, and The Burning Soul. The eleventh Charlie Parker novel, The Wrath of Angels, will be available in the UK in August 2012 and in the US in January 2013.

The Gates launched the Samuel Johnson series for younger readers in 2009, followed by Hell’s Bells (UK)/The Infernals (US) in 2011. A third Samuel Johnson novel should be finished in 2013.

I am also the co-editor, with fellow author Declan Burke, of Books to Die For, an anthology of essays from the world’s top crime writers in response to the question, “Which book should all lovers of crime fiction read before they die?” Books to Die For is available in the UK as of August 2012, and will be available in the US in October 2012.

I am based in Dublin but divide my time between my native city and the United States, where each of my novels has been set.

Singing Bones: A Novel by S G Ullman- #BookReview #AncientHistoricalFiction #NetGalley

Singing Bones by S G Ullman

An Epic Saga of Loss and Survival in an Ancient Neolithic World (The Teuta’s Child)

Book Blurb:

Nearly 8,300 years ago, a sudden climate collapse reshaped the earth. Winters grew longer and colder, harvests failed, coastlines flooded, and the ground itself became unstable. For the Téuta, a settled Neolithic village that had endured for generations, survival became uncertain.

Eini is born with troubling visions of disaster—warnings her people dismiss as superstition. As the climate worsens and violence spreads among desperate neighbors, Eini spends her lifetime trying to protect her family and preserve the fragile traditions that hold her community together. When catastrophe finally strikes, the Téuta must face the unthinkable: abandoning their ancestral home and redefining who they are in a transformed world.

Told across generations, Singing Bones follows the lives of women whose strength, memory, and resilience shape the fate of their people—from prophecy, to survival, to leadership forged in loss. Song, story, and shared history become tools of endurance in a world where nothing can be taken for granted.

Grounded in real archaeological and climate research, Singing Bones is ancient historical fiction set during the Neolithic era. Its spiritual elements arise from a prehistoric worldview in which nature, belief, and survival are inseparable. Sweeping yet intimate, it explores how early civilizations responded to climate catastrophe, displacement, and change.

Perfect for readers of immersive historical fiction, ancient civilizations, prehistoric survival stories, and epic sagas rooted in humanity’s deep past.

His Review:

Life was quite different around 8300 BC. The entire population of the world was smaller than the population of Los Angeles and surrounding area. Hunter-gatherers got fresh meat daily and developed jerking and salt storage. These were consumed when a fresh catch or animal could not be taken. The calendar was kept by a medicine man or shaman and life hinged around these individuals.

Singing Bones by S G UllmanWhen crops failed or the harvest was low, sacrifices were in order. Usually, young unspoiled girls were the preferred offering. Trading with other villages that had expertise in stone work and spear making as well as agriculture and herding helped to settle tribes into static areas rather than wandering with the herds and the seasons. Crops of barley and wheat were cultivated to provide food storage for the winter months.

Northern Idaho tribes went up to the higher plateaus during the summer because the winds kept the village cooler. During the winter months, settling into the canyons provided protection from the cold arctic blasts and freezing temperatures. This is the lifestyle of the villagers in this tome. Medicine men and women were the keys to the health and welfare of the population.

C E WilliamsBut time is forcing change. And few are dealing well with it. Told from multiple POVs, the difference in the tribal leadership, and the decisions, directions each take is engaging. The book is informational and thought provoking. Recommended to any who enjoys historical fiction, exploration of ancient civilizations and their societies! 4.5 stars – CE Williams

Reverse by Steven F Havill

A Posadas County Mystery Book 28

Book Blurb:

A road to nowhere . . .

Recovering from a near-death collision with a giant elk, Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman is back to finish her last month at the Posadas County sheriff’s office. It’s supposed to be a quiet road to retirement, until a body is found at the bottom of a water-filled quarry. The barely alive figure of the grandson of the wealthiest man in town also lies further down the ravine.

Figuring out what really happened is going to take everything that Estelle and her understaffed, overworked team have. Especially when there’s a vandal on the loose targeting the local airfield and the department has its own internal issues wreaking havoc.

Plunged into another tricky investigation, one Estelle hopes will be her last, she can’t help but think her retirement can’t come soon enough . . .

His Review:

Reverse by Steven F HavillShe is a lovely 16-year-old girl and has the chance to drive a vintage Corvette. The opportunity is overwhelming. Sure, the car is a stick shift but she knows she is a quick learner. The key is handy and the ride up to the quarry will be fun on this warm and breezy night. What could possibly go wrong?

Young Martin Chavez is smitten with her and would like to ride along. However, he does not have access to the car or the garage where it is stored. So, he takes his motorcycle up to the quarry to keep an eye on her and her escort. The quarry is deep and filled with water but many young couples use the area as a quiet place for a tryst. A little night petting after a joy ride is not unusual, but Martin is very jealous of the guy with her.

She backs up the car expecting the photo shoot to give her lifelong memories. When things go awry, what follows is a very extensive investigation that attempts to pin the blame on young Martin.

C E WilliamsThe MC is Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman who is looking forward to retirement and counting the days. This tragedy, however, takes most of her focus as she is also wrestling with a vandal wreaking chaos and confusion. The MC appeared to me to be quick to judge, no one’s fool, seen it-been there, and had no patience for anyone she suspected of wrong doing. You wouldn’t want to cross her. This along with the usual internal issues of the department spells some slow time for the plot.  3.5 stars – CE Williams

Hard Time by Logan Ryles

Mason Sharpe Thrillers Book 13

Book Blurb:

Everyone wants him caught. Someone wants him dead.

On the frozen backroads of upstate New York, Army veteran Mason Sharpe picks up a hitchhiker stranded in the cold.

Minutes later, a sheriff’s deputy pulls them over. Three gunshots ring out, the deputy collapses into the snow, and the hitchhiker disappears into the woods.

Joining local cops on the manhunt, Mason learns the truth: the hitchhiker is Shane Hagan, an escaped federal inmate and fellow special forces veteran.

But when a second encounter erupts into a gunfight in the winter forest, Mason sees what the cops are missing – someone wants Hagan silenced.

Caught in the middle of a deadly web, Mason must choose—trust the system that convicted Hagan or believe a fellow veteran’s desperate story and help him save his family. Make the wrong call, and Mason could end up in prison.

But some bonds are worth any risk. And Mason Sharpe has never been afraid of Hard Time.

His Review:

Hard Time by Logan RylesShane Hogan has escaped from a secured hospital room and is running loose. Set up by a mafia lord, Shane pleads not guilty to protect his family. A freezing New York winter is nowhere to be escaping to, but Shane is not an ordinary prisoner. He is obviously well trained in military evasion tactics.

Mason Sharpe is another ex-military special operative. Together, they are in constant evasion of the Stefano Crime family. The syndicate is a much closer threat than the New York state police. Their objective is to silence Shane. He has stumbled into their covert drug smuggling method and they would rather kill him and his family than allow the evidence to reach law enforcement.

Logan Ryles keeps this book moving at a brisk pace while building appreciation and admiration for these two ex-special forces operatives. There is no lack of intrigue and excitement as the story progresses. Enjoy! 4.5 stars CE Williams

The Mediator by Robert Bailey

Max Ringo Book 1

Book Blurb:

From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Rich Justice and The Boomerang comes a gripping thriller about a disgraced lawyer facing the legal battle of her life as she tries to redeem herself—and save her son.

Max Ringo was once a courtroom star at an elite law firm. Then a car accident left her addicted to painkillers, and her life dissolved into shambles. Now fresh out of rehab and making a comeback as a mediator, she gets her shot at redemption when she is appointed to handle a high-stakes divorce.

But as Max begins negotiations between the two notorious power players, the trap is already sprung. The husband kidnaps her teenage son, Nathan, and gives her a chilling ultimatum: settle the case on his terms…or the boy dies.

Over three relentless days, Max must resolve a cutthroat legal battle while pursuing a covert mission to rescue Nathan. She’ll risk everything—her career, her freedom, her life—to beat a ruthless adversary at his own game. Even when a shadowy syndicate enters the fray and bodies start to drop, only one thing matters. She must bring her son home, whatever the cost.

His Review:

Max Ringo has been a top negotiator while working with litigators and others to settle estates and other businesses. This story points out the difficulty of settlement as the estates become larger and the stakes for the parties’ life-changing outcomes are impacted. The amounts are enormous and those who have the largest stake are the ones least willing to give up their position.

The Mediator by Robert BaileyA multi-billion-dollar estate is the key issue in this story. Drugs and crime take center stage as the participants balance personal problems with financial greed. Winning and losing may mean a castle or a shack. None of the litigants in this conflict is willing to concede! The most recalcitrant is Dagger Richardson who helped to take a fledgling company into a multi-billion-dollar concern. Can there be a meeting of the minds and a resolution to this issue?

C E WilliamsMy last novel by this author, Rich Justice, is the third in the Jason Rich series read and reviewed last year. This book kicks off the new Max Ringo series and is well-paced action with a somewhat lower body count. The story is a prime example of how the wealthy keep their wealth. Read and try to understand the dynamics of the situation. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

Book Blurb:

Ophelia Harris, a former CIA analyst who went to work for a private intelligence and security firm working in Afghanistan, has been trying hard to stay under the radar.

What seems like a lifetime ago and a world away, she disappeared from the sandbox after a raid on an insurgent money laundering operation went terribly wrong. Every operator on the team was killed save one.

Ophelia escaped. And she got away with two suitcases filled with cash.

Gerhard Mueller runs Grendel Security Group and is Ophelia’s former employer. He knows a traitor set up the ambush that killed his team and he believes he knows who that traitor is.

He wants Harris found – and he wants her dead.

Austin Medford, a former Army Ranger, is sipping a beer at an airport lounge when he runs into a woman he believes he’s seen before during his deployment overseas. A woman running from trouble.

Soon Harris and Medford find themselves being brutally hunted by forces known and unknown trying to take them off the board.

The rules of the game are simple – run, fight, or die.

His Review:

The job of a paid killer for the government has many drawbacks. One is that when you have completed your mission you are expendable.

The Hunted by Steve RussoOphelia Harris worked in Afghanistan as an interrogator for the Central Intelligence Agency and killed one of the people she was interrogating to establish her validity. Refuse to talk and you would take all of your secrets to the grave. Once our involvement in country was completed there was a national vendetta against her.

Her boss realized that what she was doing was illegal and against US policy and punishable with death or life in prison. She was acting under his orders and he would attempt to eliminate her and do away with any threat to him. Thus’ this story illuminates the down side of working for clandestine government agencies. She moved away and established a new life after her contract with the agency was completed.

C E WilliamsHaving someone who can testify to the ruthlessness of these agencies is not in our government’s best interests. Her handler engages some of his best operatives to eliminate the threat she poses to his agency and the US government. This story will educate the reader to the underside of government service. Enjoy! 4.5 stars – CE Williams
