His Review:

Mr. Jeremy Whitehall was born into wealth in Great Britain. The colonies were suppressed by exorbitant taxes on every transaction payable to George the Third. The taxes help support a war with France and the colonists get no benefit from the taxes. Also, all shipping is required to sail through British ports and pay a fee to the King before delivering or selling anything developed in the Colonies. The British merchants and King have a monopoly on all production and deliver no benefit to the Colonies.

Jeremy could care less. The bars in London are loaded with beer and spirits. He works for his uncle but in reality is a “Never-do-well”. His well-to-do uncle tires of his wild ways and sends him to America as a hand on a sailing ship. He works at every job on the ship and becomes a very good sailor.

He meets a lovely young lady in the Colonies and decides he wants to wed her. However, a whaling ship goes out for an indefinite period of time and he is not sure she will wait for him.

A well written novel and believable tale of love. There is romance and clashes between some of the characters. It’s a well plotted and paced narrative, well worth the reader’s time. Despite a slightly slow start, I found my interest growing as I read and by halfway through the book did not want to put it down. Read and enjoy. You will not be disappointed. CE Williams

His Review:

Nazi Germany held no safe places for Jews. The maniacs in leadership followed the hatred of their leader for these individuals everywhere. There were no places for Jews to hide and if they were caught both the person or family hiding the individual were killed. The zoo seemed to be an answer because there were places in the zoo that had openings where the fugitives could be hidden.

The zoo was also a place loved by Hitler and enjoyed by his chief followers. Visitations were scheduled around the needs of the habitats for the animals. Large boulders and other structures were hollow and in some cases whole families would hide within these enclosures. Many of the staff were helping to hide these unfortunates and if caught were sent to the gas chambers along with their friends.

A quick bullet in the head was considered too expensive and a waste of ammunition. Therefore, elaborate alternatives were developed. This author captures the terror and desperation of these times. Well written and very suspenseful. C E Williams I recommend it as an empathetic and well-researched and written narrative. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

His Review:

The tragedy that was the American Civil War took more American lives than any other conflict in history. The issue was the northern states fighting a group of southern states. Sometimes even brothers within a family were split between their loyalties to the area they were born and the flag they chose.

This book concentrates on the misery that was felt on both sides and the young people who decided that they did not want to fight in that war. One of the facts of this conflict was that it was illegal to avoid conscription into this war. Either on the side of the north or the south, avoiding being conscripted was punishable by death or immediately being sent back to the front, sometimes without a weapon.

Jerry Gabriel explores the paranoia and fear that any deserter had. Escaping this turmoil was fraught with danger. Even young children were employed to help find the deserters. Bounty hunters made a living capturing these individuals and getting them back to their respective armies.

The time was brutal and vicious and avoiding capture meant never going into a town if it could be avoided. Bounties being paid during times of economic tragedy resulted in hundreds of thousands of people being put back into inhumane prisons with no future. Read this story and witness the many facets of the Civil War not taught in schools. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

Dez Limerick is not your poster hero. The fact is that this 5’ 5” man who can be described as a barrel is anything but the standard hero. However, Dez has experience and talents that most men can only dream of. He has a quick wit that measures situations and response needs like an orchestra conductor.

A splinter group has decided to stage a coup and change a section of the California coast into a separate country; and a state that will declare itself a separate country and request membership in the United Nations. This is being accomplished during a heat wave and by a very large group of itinerant hippies. Dez is not willing to see a group of dissidents change the shape of the country and our freedoms.

Dez is a likeable character with a guitar in one hand and a questionable demeanor that seems to attract a certain kind of woman. Can he prevent a kidnapping and the plans of the separatist group? His demeanor is a serious addition to the believability of the story. I found it very enjoyable and a quick read. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

My Review:

I always enjoy reading historical fiction, especially those stories using real events and persons. This book is very timely and focuses on the historical Culper Ring and Robert Townsend, one of the main support characters, aka Samuel Culper Jr., or Agent 723.

The protagonist is a young teacher from London seeking employment in New York after she and her father moved there from Long Island. Serendipity had a hand in introducing her to a British officer’s family with two small children seeking a tutor. She meets Molly and Jamie at a hanging. Molly is the antithesis to the Major’s wife and provides great street credibility along with descriptive scenes of 1776 New York City.

Abigail has ample reason to dislike the British but manages to plaster on her “teacher’s smile” when around the officers, conferring with the Major while she is tutoring the children in another room of his mansion. It’s the perfect setup to overhear British plans for war. It’s difficult to play the cloying female around the arrogant British officers, but in the role she accepts—nay—forces upon Robert Townsend, she steps into the treacherous world of espionage as Agent 355.

I love the way Abigail faces the fear, forces herself to calm, then dissolves when it’s safe. This is not a role to be taken lightly and is fraught with danger, intrigue, and suspense.

While Molly and Jamie school her on keeping arms’ length from the soldiers, Robert is heavy on spy craft instruction, and their closeness fosters a romance. He is brilliant in his work, creating a perfect cover while setting up a system of codes and a network of carefully curated contacts.

Depiction of the cruelty and the terror of the people quietly builds throughout the novel, manifesting a quiet tension. Townsend was never caught and, indeed so careful in his position that his name was only linked to the spy ring in 1930. That he might have had a lover who passed him major sources of information is neatly woven into the narrative as the tutor who may have shared vital information. She is portrayed very believably as an eighteenth-century teacher/tutor, strong, principled, but with proper feminine frailty.

I enjoyed the storyline and the recognizable events, familiar and historical facts, and that Agent 355 was a woman—this could have been her—why not? Still, I had a little problem with the romance and the epilogue.

I read Crimson at Cape May, Book 2 of the Haunted Shores Mysteries in September 2020 and greatly enjoyed that ghost mystery. This historical fiction is somewhat of a departure from those books.

His Review:

Before the Revolutionary War, the people in “The Colonies” were simply subjects of the King of England. Many had come from London to escape the cold, rainy weather and the diseases that were a constant part of life in England. They had come to escape poverty and fulfill the dream of a better life. The “Red Coats” were their own countrymen working to maintain order.

Their entire life changed after the “Declaration of Independence.” Didn’t the colonials understand that they enjoyed all of the benefits of British rule including the “Red Coats” to protect them? The climate changed as George Washington trained an army that chose to fight those British soldiers and the Red Coats were very angry that they were not shown the respect that they felt was due them.

Revolutionaries were gathered and hanged including Nathan Hale. He exclaimed as they put the rope around his neck on the gallows, “I regret that I have but one life to give for my country.” Abigale watched in angry silence as he died thrashing at the end of that rope and her first love was gone. The crowd was disbursed.

Most of the people were first-generation Americans or recently arrived people looking for a better living in the “New World.” General Washington had the army of revolutionaries who felt that all of the taxes required of them were going to England without any benefit provided to improve this country. The revolution, which began as a protest, devolved into a fight for freedom from the soldiers who abused them, burned their homes, and conscripted many to military service.

Reading this book will enlighten the reader as to why the war was necessary. Similar to the French Revolution, the people required recognition for their struggle and the thankless taxes sent to the King. A new perspective of the Revolutionary War! 5 stars – CE Williams

Last year, I read Red Shadows at Saugatuck, Book 4 of the Haunted Shores Mystery (a paranormal fantasy), and greatly enjoyed it as well.

The picture of George Washington crossing the Delaware River to win our freedom sticks in most people’s minds. This tale is quite different but nevertheless very informative. The “Red Coats” were a brutal contingent of soldiers who held no sympathy for the American Colonists! Our forefathers were, after all, rebelling from the true monarch.

Christopher Hawkins is a young man intent upon helping the cause of freedom. He is young and idealistic. Indentured servants were common and he was sold by his father to help in a tannery. He hated the job and the smells and got word that those sailing on ships could expect to share in goods captured on the high seas. His problem was that the British ships were larger, better manned and the end result was capture and imprisonment.

Young Hawkins is able to escape the prison ship and tries to get back to his home in Rhode Island. The journey is a very long and dangerous journey on foot. There are families who give him shelter and food as he travels.

Ultimately, he is captured and returned in chains to a ship off the coast. The ship, however, is badly over-populated and in the melee, he slips overboard and swims to land. He travels at night and hides during the day. Without a light to guide his way, his travels are fraught with danger.

His memories are very enlightening and entertaining. They have given me an entirely new perspective on the Revolutionary War. Enjoy! 5 stars – CE Williams

Macy is a hungry young woman helping to support and put her little sister through school. And just in time, an ad appears for a very nice salary just for watching an old mansion for a few days. What could be more attractive? Yes, the mansion has a bad reputation and its owner is old and very eccentric, but she is close to losing the apartment they share and food is extremely scarce. She jumps at the chance despite her little sister’s badgering.

Things happen at the mansion that defy logic. Doors close, cold air comes out of nowhere and lights go on and off without explanation. Her instructions are to lock up at night and allow no one in, no matter what the situation. The property is multiple floors and she decides to stop at the top and work her way down. However, after turning off the lights on the upper floors and working her way down, strange noises and lights coming back on just after being shut off are becoming the norm. She begins to think there are strange forces at work here. But she and her sister desperately need the money to avoid eviction!

C E Williams This is a very well-written spooky story which gradually deepens in a mysterious way. It becomes a story very hard to set down. Read, enjoy and wonder! 4.5 stars – CE Williams

The Author: Marcus Kliewer is a writer and stop-motion animator. His debut novel We Used to Live Here began life as a serialized short story on Reddit, where it won the Scariest Story of 2021 award on the NoSleep forum. His Review:

The Colonel had been a star in Castro’s Cuba. However, Castro sends him all over the world to influence third-world countries. He began to live an expansive life style with a woman in every country he operated in. Meanwhile, his wife back in Cuba was raising a son and daughter by herself and the Colonel was no longer welcome in his birth country.

South Africa is a very dangerous country. People from all over Africa and Europe go there for the gambling. There is no table limit, and Juan Mateus de Silva quickly learns that this is better than robbing banks. He and his companions began to develop strategies to relieve the gambling houses of their earnings. He is targeted for elimination. Instead of killing him, however, he spends nearly 40 years as a prisoner working in the gold mines. Any attempt to escape earns 40 lashes and Juan’s back is a scarred testimony to this result.

As time goes by, the son has a son who discovers his grandfather is not dead. And he begins a plan.

The fast-pacing of the storyline as well as the setting keeps the interest throughout. The characters consist of some scoundrels; the main character being well developed.

This story can be brutal in its descriptions and the cruelties that exist in South Africa. Once in the system, there is no escape. Gold and diamonds are not worth the reward meted out by the mine owners and controllers of the economy. 5 stars – CE Williams

This is Book 2 of the Mateus de Silva series but can be read as a standalone. Many thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this ebook. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
