My Review:

One thing you must say about a Baldacci book. They are uniquely his style. This one is the first in a new series. As eager as I was to start a new Baldacci series, I struggle to write the review now, and as a book released back in 2018, not sure it matters.

Whether or not this one introduced a new trope or not, I’m becoming weary of the seriously damaged protagonist, particularly a female protagonist. Must they all have suffered some horrible childhood trauma? Are all female detectives or FBI agents carrying scars for which there is no recovery?

The description of the Grand Canyon and surrounds is fun, and as we’ve had the privilege of seeing that Wonder of the World, interesting and engaging. The storyline started out strong and held interest until it severely veered off the rails and went looking for action that didn’t compute, pushing disbelief. Then it catapulted into implausibility and no longer rang close to reality, although given that politics and leaders are appearing to go for broke, perhaps it could be remotely conceivable.

On which level then would that be? Those nations work together? Russians, Chinese, Koreans? Mercenaries? That a possible Olympic weight-lifter, FBI experienced, could pull along a female associate for help after being called off looking into the matter by her superiors. (Aren’t they always?) That a missing person, after hiding out for days (weeks?), with a sophisticated bomb can now help her climb out of the Grand Canyon with it? Really? What was he going to do if she hadn’t found him?

Atlee Pine is smart, macho, and a bit over the top with all that brooding over her twin sister, Mercy, which is apparently going to be the thread that weaves into Book 2.

I’ve read a number of Baldacci books. Another author hit or miss for me. I really enjoyed my last, A Calamity of Souls, picked a Best Book of the Year 2024, but this one missed the mark for me. Too much reaching here and it just didn’t work for me. Maybe it would for you.

A totally gripping and heart-stopping FBI mystery thriller (Sandra Vos Book 2)

My Review:

Not a detective or investigator, the story centers around Sandra Vos, a negotiator with the FBI. This is a high-stakes negotiation in that it appears there may be more than one perp and the hostages are the patients and staff of a hospital.

This is not her first rodeo, having been proven a successful negotiator before. The hospital goes into lockdown and they quickly realize there is no communication in or out of the facility. She must determine, somehow, how to get communications back up, who to speak to, and if possible determine the number and location of the hostage takers.

Of course, in many of these situations, there is one responsible for taking it down without violence and those in police authority who would rather just storm the building. In these circumstances, however, there is a too large possibility of catastrophic collateral damage. Say, for instance, the four-year-old girl who was to receive a heart transplant that day.

So what is the motivation of the hostage takers? A wrongful death? Crushing medical debt without recourse? And aren’t all the hostages already in extremely precarious positions?

The team must first identify who is holding the power—anyone holding power. Get them to talk. If more than one perp, what is their common ground?

While I wasn’t overly engaged with the protagonist, I enjoyed the contributions made by the team, each with a niche, supplying valuable intel. The patients as well as staff made for interesting characters and there is almost no lag in the storyline pace.

It’s a well-plotted narrative with a few surprises, although somewhat predictable. The tension ramps up as the hours tick by without solution. In this case, there is emotional engagement with the antagonist(s) as well as the protagonist and the underlying motivation is one most of us can understand.

It’s been a while since either the CE or I have read one of Ms Arnold’s books, the last being The Silent Witness in another series and we both enjoyed those. If you’re a fan, you’ll no doubt enjoy this one as well, and although the second in the series, could be read as a standalone. This novel releases next month!

My Review:

Well, I really enjoyed the description of the Champagne area of France during WWII. The characters not so much, but then one of the characters becomes the main thrust of the switch between time periods and the book takes off.

Liv is the granddaughter who accompanies Grandma Edith back to France where it’s anticipated she’ll reveal a secret too large to divulge in the US. Since the blurb covers pretty much the entire story, there is little to speak of the storyline, although the characters (both WWII and contemporary) still suffer under heavily weighted romance threads, which quickly become tedious.

I enjoyed the historical aspects of the Champagne area under German occupation as well and their need to enjoy the fruits of the French countryside. Loved the information regarding the massive tunnel system and the stashes of wine and champagne. The resistance, mentioned in the blurb, gets very little elaboration beyond what is already noted and it would have been nice to have had a little more of their exploits.

The contemporary story has Liv embroiled in an “instalove” situation as well, and the romance angle seems to overshadow the earlier time plot of the Germans in occupied wine country.

Can you say twisty? There were quite a number of them, crafting a narrative that quickly layers complexity. I didn’t understand Grandma Edith’s gnarly attitude or her relationship with Liv, and with all the affairs going on in, wasn’t crazy about the WWII generation.

Having read The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau in September, I thought I’d try another of the author’s novels. I think I see a common plot device here using an octogenarian in present day with historical time line sub-plot. I found that narrative strangely compelling, almost more so than this one.

If you can overlook all the romance entanglements, there is a story there and the plot moves at an even pace. Extensive research is obvious and the denouement satisfies sufficiently to add back a star.

OMG! Are you an older person with no concept of those crazy games the kids play on their devices with all kinds of paraphernalia so they are capable of speaking to other players on the other side of the world as they wipe out all the baddies with blasters?

I joined that club some years ago and have never caught up, at one point even trying to look into a “mature” game I could likewise play.

Not going to happen.

The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver — The Never Game – US cover

The Never Game featuring Colter Shaw plunks you square into that scene and explains it in a suspenseful mystery. Mercy! Shaw is not your average game player. He was raised off-grid with his brother and sister with their survivalist parents but with keen knowledge of his environment. Now he uses his skills as a gifted forensic tracker.

Shaw is making a living “finding” people and largely taps into an apparently lucrative rewards market. He lives in a Winnebago and has a small but effective support group. It’s fun the way he works “the percentages” whether or not the mission or question is viable. In this, the first in a new series, he is drawn into the gaming world.

Okay, I loved all the insights he discovers and explains, most of which blew me away. Did I retain any of it? You know I didn’t, but it was sure fun to read. There are theories and premises that, unfortunately in the six years it’s been since this was published, are eerily becoming the world in which we now live. AI scares the devil out of me, while fascinating me as well.

Is there any romance? Just a touch for those who need that in their novels. Have you heard of The Whisper Man? (The Whispering Man?) I have. There was a 2019 movie, right? And I believe another is coming to your screens soon. Well, there is an interesting and popular game with the same basic idea…and it’s incorporated into the narrative.

Don’t take my word for it. This is a book you might have missed but shouldn’t have. Check it out.

The CE read a Deaver novella in January of this year, Downstate, and greatly enjoy it. I’m gonna have to start paying more attention. Many thanks to my local library for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

My Review:

Detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles are back in the eleventh installment of the series, and Jane again pursues with the heart of a pit bull. I always enjoy the female buddy leads who often bring an emotional quality to the novel not found in male-dominated crime fiction.

The first part of the book is first person by the lone survivor of a mass killing in Botswana. A tourist safari gone way, way wrong. The suspense starts the novel on a high note and seldom falls as the intermittent voice of the African survivor is plunked into the narrative of the gruesome murder in Boston, revealing details about the unique death.

“A woman in love is a poor judge of character.”

The account of the survivor and how she manages to live is gripping. Unfortunately, the killer also begins his unique MO in Boston and guess who discovers it? The settings are descriptive down to the buzzing of the insects and calls of the wild. Jane, herself, becomes a tiger, sure she’s caught her man until an operation proves otherwise. Still, she perseveres.

There are a few twists; it wasn’t easy to catch this guy but it’s always the ride, not the destination, right?

I enjoy how the two, Rizzoli and Maura work together, although opposites in manner and procedure. (Also a popular series on TNT). They are not so fleshed at this point in the series; assumed by now you know their intimate details. (I could do without the Jane mom thing though.) I think you’d still be able to pick up Book 11 of the series and enjoy independently.

Loved The Spy Coast back in November 2023, the first in a new series. A proven author you can really look forward to reading. Many thanks to my local library for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

My Review:

Well, not exactly a new idea for a plot, one that’s been done more than a few times before. This one starts with five couples.

Lyla is in a pickle with her contract for her research and at loose ends, and against her better judgment, agrees to go with boyfriend Nico to participate in a reality TV show called One Perfect Couple.

Something is immediately wrong when the deserted island that was supposed to be a paradise isn’t really ready. The two crew who delivered them have set rules which surprise a few of those so thrilled to be chosen that they neglected to read the fine print.

Unfortunately, the first round eliminated Nico who is sent back and Lyla is left without her partner supposedly waiting for further eliminations to see who will end up the one perfect couple.

To add to the debacle, there is a ferocious storm (hurricane?) that rips through the island almost immediately and leaves those on the island essentially without power or communication to the mainland. Taking inventory of stores, they devise a plan to survive until rescue arrives and one guy appears to take control.

Uh oh…predictably, things begin to happen and not in a good way. They begin the fight for food and water. As the drama ramps up, the group begins to lose a survivor at a time and the tension turns desperate, then deadly.

It starts a bit slow, introducing the characters and the plot device, but once on the island and the storm hits, it becomes engaging and entertaining. There are twists and a surprise in the denouement you didn’t expect. Who will survive to be rescued?

My Review:

I borrowed this audiobook from my local library because of the author’s name with whom I was familiar having read and enjoyed previous books, the last a thriller, The 6:20 Man. This novel, however, is a far cry from the others. It’s a serious indictment of the time (1968) and place (Virginia), although certainly not a new story, nor unfortunately one that has appreciably changed since then.

Jack Lee, a white attorney, attempts to take on the defense of Jerome, a young black Vietnam War veteran in the killing of Jerome’s elderly white employers. The author wastes little time in developing his characters sympathetically and the reader almost immediately connects with both.

Jack has never before endeavored to take on such a sensational trial, much less one that will engender strong personal and political repercussions, including from his own family who raised him with a lack of overt prejudice and quickly realize he’s in way above his head and is in deep doo-do.

It is then that he is approached by Desiree DuBose, a Black lawyer from Chicago. She is well known for her expertise in the courtroom as well as her efforts in the fight for racial equality.

The novel crafts a thought-provoking, emotional legal thriller as well as a family drama. Steeped in historical perspective and well developed characters, the narrative deeply dives into the fight to protect and salvage their client as well as battle a corrupt and flawed justice system. If Jerome didn’t kill the elderly couple, who did?

The tension ratchets up throughout the storyline, often boiling over in heated controversial racial injustice arguments by Desiree. Both main characters are well developed and despite, or perhaps because of, an extreme difference in backgrounds appear to work well together. They begin to develop a grudging respect for each other.

The author pulls no punches in using malicious characters and the language, dialogue, and slurs reflect the time and place. It’s an intensive look back on an ugly system with an emotionally spirited plea in and between the lines to look at it again.

The Author’s Note will explain a lot of the decisions he made in the writing of this literary fiction effort which certainly takes a raw turn. It’s a hard read as well as lengthy, but take the time to read or listen to the informative explanation, which may answer your question.

The recent conclave of Cardinals elected Pope Leo XIV. It was done fairly quickly after the death of John Paul II. (Apparently, he was being groomed by the former Pope in his final years.) All Roman Catholics know that the Pope is elected by a conclave of Cardinals under 80 years of age that meets in the Sistine Chapel to elect the successor. This story examines that tradition from a unique perspective.

Why has there never been a female head of the church? Tradition has it that there will never be a female pope. One of Christ’s closest confidants was Mary Magdalene. She certainly helped continue His teachings after His death. Catholic schools teach religion and a majority of the teachers are nuns. Then why are there no female priests? Other Protestant religions certainly have female church leaders!

This book delves into a mythical event in which all of the Cardinals are captured and taken away to a secret place in France. The world is in an uproar and many police and investigative organizations are searching for them! The master minds of this undertaking are a group of very rich people who wish to “right” history.

The fascinating portion of the story to me is the discussion of the Cathars. This was a religious group in the thirteenth century that believed in everything the church in Rome believes but did not believe that the church should be so rich and all powerful. They also believed that women should be equal to men and be allowed into the priesthood…and still do.

This is a very fascinating fiction thriller interwoven with historical events! 5 stars – CE Williams
