#Throwback Thursday Renee began the Throwback Thursday meme on her blog, “It’s Book Talk” to share some of her old favorites as well as sharing books published over a year ago. Sounded like a good reason to join! My TT posts will not come from current ARCs or new releases. Means I’ll be going back over some of my oldies but goodies, my favorite authors, and some of my favorite stories from authors you might not have previously experienced. Hopefully, you’ll find either a story or author that interests you and you’ll check them out.

This week I am highlighting Jonas Saul, another terrific, prolific author who has produced nineteen (The Chase published April 30, 2017) in the Sarah Roberts Thriller series, two of which I reviewed on Goodreads (The Warning, Sarah Roberts Series #2 and #3, The Crypt). He has actually written numerous thrillers along with a trilogy. The Crypt was published by Imagine Press. He consistently runs approximately 4.5 to 5 stars for his books sold on Amazon. #CoverLove – In With the New – Or Maybe Not

#Cover Love – we do love our colorful, eye-catching book covers! It’s the first, all-important impression of any book. A yea or nay. Pick up and investigate further or lay down and look for something else. Unfortunately, we are a “judge the book by the cover” sort of people. As with any artistic endeavor–we know what we like or don’t like.

And if you’ve been reading and reviewing for any length of time, you’ve seen the evolution of covers as they have progressed, usually denoting a new edition of the book. This week I am highlighting June Collins, another terrific author who produced this Vietnam memoir, Goodbye Junie Moon, which was reviewed on Goodreads. She has actually written two others, the first The Khaki Mafia with Robin Moore published by Avon Books in 1972. Global Observation of World Book Day–Read Much?

Amazon celebrated World Book Day on April 20 — **Picture from Amazon Kindle Prime Landing Page**

This year, World Book Day is being observed on Sunday, April 23rd. Amazon Kindle Prime has a beautiful landing page, commemorating the day with pictures and an invitation to join in the global celebration of “reading, authors, and books.” On April 20th, Seattle promoted a “Global Free Library, author readings, and book inspired activities.”

This is truly a global event; however, the UK and Ireland seem to take it one step further by providing World Book Day costumes for children.

Originally organized by UNESCO on April 23rd, 1995, the annual event primarily promotes reading and publishing. Of course, there is a strong emphasis as well on the importance of protecting copyrighted material. Last year there were 250 separate events on four continents by more than 100 countries.

The 20th anniversary of World Book Day is celebrated by sharing why you #LovetoRead. Share your stories on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. It’s not too late to set up your own Goodreads Reading Challenge. (I’ve had to reduce my reading challenge to 65 books this year–I’m writing more.)

Reading empowers you through intellectual growth and activates imagination. Reading is major relaxation, a quiet moment to yourself; the ultimate stress reliever.

Just Enjoy Reading or Bibliophile Qualified?

There are usually one or more bibliophiles in your life–besides yourself! Whether they are out having fun, reading, or just too busy for interviews is another whole subject.

However, I did get a response from my former Yuma RV lot-mate, retired librarian, Roberta, who wrote, “I do love books, but I’m not a voracious reader. I probably read a few books a month on average. I belong to a book group, so I read what we’ll be discussing each month. Depending on how long that takes me, I’ll read one or two books that I want to read. I listen regularly to NPR & it’s a great source of recommended books for me.”

Roberta enjoys her book group and actively participates at times leading a book discussion. As part of that responsibility, she admits to doing quite a bit of research on the author and topic. Reading for her own enjoyment, she gleans books from all the major sources: public library, Kindle and Barnes and Noble online, although she admits to be more kinesthetic, as she prefers the “real books”, soft or hard cover to digital or eBooks.

Not wedded to any one genre, Roberta enjoys historical fiction, mysteries, family sagas and psychological fiction as well as travel. Extending into non-fiction, topics that hold her interest are history, biography, and the arts, and that incorporates many of her favorite authors, including Ivan Doig. She will follow some contemporary authors on Facebook, but does not join e-mail lists and although aware of Goodreads, doesn’t use it. The librarian in her still makes notes to herself about books that she’s read, although she does not rate or review them publicly.

Roberta is married, has grandkids in another state and enjoys an active life outdoors including traveling, hiking, cycling, Jeeping, cooking, writing in her journal and keeping up with personal letters. While she is not sure she qualifies as a true bibliophile, I’m not sure there is an absolute number that would elevate you to the category. However–three or four books a month?? There are people who haven’t read anything since high school! I’d say she does very well! Virginia Williams
