Lowdown Road by Scott Von Doviak

Book Blurb:

Join a heart-racing road trip across 1970s America as two cousins make the heist of their lives and must avoid the cops and criminals hot on their tails.

It’s the summer of ’74…Richard Nixon has resigned from office, CB radios are the hot new thing, and in the great state of Texas two cousins hatch a plan to drive $1 million worth of stolen weed to Idaho, where some lunatic is gearing up to jump Snake River Canyon on a rocket-powered motorcycle. But with a vengeful sheriff on their tail and the revered and feared marijuana kingpin of Central Texas out to get his stash back, Chuck and Dean are in for the ride of their lives – if they can make it out alive…

Scott Von Doviak, longtime pop-culture journalist for The A.V. Club, Film Threat, The Hollywood Reporter, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, made a splash with his debut novel, CHARLESGATE CONFIDENTIAL, which Stephen King called “terrific” and “a fun machine…the white-knuckle kind.” With LOWDOWN ROAD, he cements his reputation for pedal-to-the-metal storytelling that also makes you think about just who we are and where our darker roads might lead us.

His Review:

Lowdown Road by Scott Von DoviakThe Snake River Canyon is about 450 feet from rim to river and straight down. Evel Knievel is going to jump it with his motorcycle. Bets are made around the country on how many pieces will be left after he falls. Bikers from around the country are converging on Twin Falls to watch the event. Three never-do-wells are speeding across country being tracked by a sheriff who wants to kill rather than apprehend them. They have a delivery to make to drug dealers who are working the event.

C E WilliamsThe sheriff is always a step behind the three as they speed towards Twin Falls. He will kill anyone who gets in his way and he particularly likes killing bikers. This story moves and has a number of interesting twists. Read and enjoy! 4.5 stars – CE Williams

To Catch a Spy by Mark ONeill #BookReview #HeistCrime

Book Blurb:

“A worthy sequel to the classic.” ― Harlan Coben

Estate approved sequel to the novel To Catch a Thief by David Dodge and 1955 Academy Award-winning film by Alfred Hitchcock

To Catch a Spy by Mark ONeill

It’s been a year since John Robie, notorious Riviera jewel thief, proved his innocence by catching a copycat burglar. And it’s been a year since John has seen Francie Stevens, the adventurous socialite who not only saw through his disguise, but helped him catch the copycat. Now Francie is returning to the Riviera for its first-ever Fashion Week as a model for a top French designer, and John plans on rekindling their romance. But there’s a problem. While helping a friend, John chases down a mysterious courier, whose ruthless associates now want John dead. To make matters worse, when Francie arrives, she has a boyfriend in tow, and tells John that she wants nothing to do with him.

John has to figure out why he’s a hunted man, and why Francie is acting suspiciously. Digging deeper, he discovers a spy ring with evil intent. As John works unofficially to gather evidence, a question begins to haunt him―could Francie Stevens be a spy? With his enemies closing in, John turns to his cat burglar skills to try to save his life and expose the traitors. To survive, he has to catch the spies before they catch―and kill―a retired thief!

His Review:

John Robie is a very accomplished individual. He has trained as an acrobat in the circus and has maintained his climbing abilities throughout his life. He is an ex-patriot living on the French Riviera and has honed his craft as a jewel thief. He frequents the posh hotels and other places where the rich and famous go to play.

To Catch a Spy by Mark ONeillFrancie Stevens is a young lady learning the modeling trade. She is very lovely and picks up the business fairly well. Some of the designers decide to use her in the upcoming fashion shows and she is quickly becoming famous. Many designers wish to engage her to promote their designs. She is new to the business and eager to please.

Francie has an off/again, on/again affair with John, and although they seem to hit it off, they soon part ways.  She is lured by wealthy designers who want her to help with their clandestine activities. She does not know she is being used, but many of the designers are engaged in many nefarious activities. Francie is unknowingly drawn into this world and she is dragged into the world of espionage.

C E WilliamsThis story is well written and follows the format of a story written nearly a century earlier. The plot has many twists and will keep any reader glued to the outcome. The characters are particularly well developed. The French Resistance during WWII honed the skills of many of the participants. Enjoy! 4.5 stars – CE Williams

I read To Catch a Thief by David Dodge in January. While this author has been given approval to write this sequel by his estate and did an admiral job, there was a certain writing style to the original by David Dodge that I just didn’t quite find in this novel. The book will catch and hold your interest and attention but if you’ve read the original concept, (especially recently) might note a perceptible difference.

Running on Empty by Karin Fitz Sanford #BookReview #TuesdayBookBlog

The Napa Valley of California draws thousands of luxury travelers annually sparking a multi-billion dollar impact in California.

A Wine County Cold Case

Book Blurb:

An unsolved murder. A Ponzi scheme. And a heist that has ex-FBI agent Anne McCormack racing throughout the wine country.

Running on Empty by Karin Fitz SanfordIt’s been sixteen years since socialite Dinah Pardini’s body was found dumped in the backroads of Northern California’s wine country. But is her murder linked to the diabolical Ponzi scheme that now engulfs Santa Rosa, nearly bankrupting many Anne knows and loves? The ex-FBI agent-turned-estate liquidator certainly believes so and starts putting the clues together—which drives her into dangerous territory, both of the heart and body.

Anne will have to keep her wits about her if she plans on outracing thieves and on solving Dinah’s murder without becoming a victim herself, for dark forces are working against her at every turn and she’s running out of people to trust. Trust only in yourself, her uncle, a retired cop, once said. But to do that, Anne will have to forgive herself for a disastrous on-the-job judgment call that still haunts her, even as she hopes to bring criminals to justice and come out of this fever-paced adventure alive.

My Review:

Few areas of California more iconic than the Wine County of California. Beautiful rolling hills, fields of grapes and mustard, hot springs nearby. So it was easy to be drawn into this book, the cover, and the location.

Running on Empty by Karin Fitz SanfordAnne McCormack, an ex-FBI agent, runs an estate-sales business, along with her uncle Jack, retired law enforcement. The two have an extensive knowledge of police procedures and often assist the police with cold cases. They are doing that when they are led into this particular case, a question of murder, interesting connection.

Unfortunately, the recent victim had initialed a Ponzi scheme which bilked many friends, family, and anyone connected out of millions of dollars. He wasn’t exactly loved and there was no shortage of people who thought he got what he deserved.

Of course, I was looking for fun stuff about the wine country (would have appreciated more), but was interested in the main characters, who I found engaging including the dog, a golden retriever named Trailer.

The Ponzi tale is complex, the bad guys corrupt, the good guys (and gals) sincere but not infallible. Anne is well developed and I enjoyed reading about her skills in the estate sales business. Twists and turns lead to ever-widening clues and the ending zinger was fun.

Ordinary people doing their job the best they can while going about their lives. Believable characters, well-plotted and paced. I’ll be interested in another wine country installment.

I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through @NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are my honest thoughts.

Book Blurb

A clever thief with a sinister calling card has invaded Braxton campus. A string of jewelry thefts continues to puzzle the sheriff, given they’re remarkably similar to an unsolved eight-year-old case, back when Gabriel vanished one stormy night.

When a missing ruby, and a body, are discovered at the campus, Kellan must investigate the killer’s motive to protect his brother. As if the latest murder isn’t enough to keep him busy, Kellan partners with April to end the Castigliano and Vargas crime family feud. What really happened to Francesca while all those postcards showed up in Braxton?

The mafia world is more calculating than Kellan realized. If he wants to move forward, he’ll have to make a few ruthless sacrifices. And as the summer heat begins to settle in Wharton County, a couple more surprises are also in store.

My Review

Mistaken Identity Crisis by James J CudneyAgain, a new author and series for me and one with a campus setting in Braxton, a small village in north-central Pennsylvania. The protagonist is Kellan Ayrwick, an assistant professor with his PhD in communications and film. He’s done his thing in Hollywood and is back home where he grew up.

Kellan married Francesca and they have a young daughter, Emma, but his wife has been among the missing and he’d understood he was a widow, until now. Here’s where the plot gets complex and multi-layered. His wife is the daughter of a wicked mafia family and apparently there is a war brewing.

About the same time, there is a number of high profile robberies of prominent local families that suspiciously mimic robberies eight years previous about the time his younger brother Gabriel disappeared. Now Gabriel’s back and robberies have resumed in the same MO as before. There is an apparent murder of the technician working on the cable car that connects the north and south campus. This, however, is not Kellan’s first rodeo. Since his return, he’s been instrumental in helping to solve several murders and while he and April, the sheriff, have clashed before are now beginning to work in collaboration. Also, he is pretty positive his brother could not be involved in a murder.

This is the fourth in the series and now that his Nana D has won her mayoral election will take a forward spotlight as a strong support character. She is well-fleshed and we are getting to know April personally as well. Connor, a detective, also figures in the investigation.

The well-plotted and complicated mystery keeps a steady pace and provides red herrings and twists, turning the focus on one then another of the many characters involved in the storyline.

I was given this ebook download by the author, publisher, and Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours and appreciated the opportunity to read and review an intelligent, unusual cozy heist and organized crime thriller.

About the Author

James J Cudney - authorJames is my given name, but most folks call me Jay. I live in New York City, grew up on Long Island, and graduated from Moravian College. I spent fifteen years building a technology career in the retail, sports, media, and entertainment industries. I enjoyed my job, but a passion for books and stories had been missing for far too long. I’m a voracious reader in my favorite genres (thriller, suspense, contemporary, mystery, and historical fiction), as books transport me to a different world where I can immerse myself in so many fantastic cultures and places. I’m an avid genealogist who hopes to visit all the German, Scottish, Irish, and British villages my ancestors emigrated from in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Writing has been a part of my life as much as my heart, my mind, and my body. I decided to pursue my passion by dusting off the creativity inside my head and drafting outlines for several novels. I quickly realized I was back in my element growing happier and more excited with life each day. My goal in writing is to connect with readers who want to be part of great stories and who enjoy interacting with authors. To get a strong picture of who I am, check out my author website or my blog. It’s full of humor and eccentricity, sharing connections with everyone I follow—all in the hope of building a network of friends across the world.

When I completed the first book, Watching Glass Shatter, I knew I’d stumbled upon my passion again, suddenly dreaming up characters, plots, and settings all day long. I chose my second novel, Father Figure, through a poll on my blog where I let everyone vote for their favorite plot and character summaries. It is with my third book, Academic Curveball, the first in the Braxton Campus Mysteries, where I immersed myself in a college campus full of so much activity, I could hardly stop thinking about new murder scenes or character relationships to finish writing the current story. Come join in the fun!
