My Review:

Oh good grief. You can’t say I’m not consistent. An author I’ve read many times, her cozy mysteries, an apparently gave one to the CE to read in June 2022.

This one.

No Strangers Here launches a series in which the author leaves her cozy mysteries and turns out a much darker story. And you can believe that the author can spin some pretty interesting tales!

Detective Inspector Cormac O’Brien is back to lead the investigation into the murder of Jimmy O’Reilly in Dingle. Dr. Dimpna Wilde has returned to Dingle and the veterinarian quickly finds herself embroiled in the apparent murder owing to a possible connection to her family. Her father, also a veterinarian with a long-held practice is showing strong signs of dementia.

Wealthy racehorse owner Jimmy O’Reilly had quite the reputation for himself. He was quite the dapper dancer and the ladies loved it. Including Dimpna’s mother?

Along with a bird’s eye view of the beautiful tourist-drawing countryside and a well-rounded cadre of support characters, the narrative’s undercurrent reveals twists as the storyline progresses through each lead.

I reviewed Book 2 of the series, Some of Us Are Looking and really enjoyed it but I can’t find a Book 3 for this series. I found Book 1 to be a bit slower than the second, but as the start of a series, that’s not unusual. Dimpna has her problems, of course she does, but I found the novel about the Irish animal doctor engaging and either installment could be read as a standalone.

My Review:

Harry Bosch is working as a volunteer reserve officer (working free) to keep himself in the system somewhere investigating a cold case for the San Fernando PD. He’s also moonlighting as a PI. In that capacity, he was hired by a billionaire to find an heir he may have produced when he was a college student and still very much under the thumb of family. Now he is very ill and believes he doesn’t have much time and, of course, his company would prefer no heirs be found.

The cold case may be just as tough, that of a serial rapist. Fortunately, with his hand still legimately capable of research within the department—some according to the book—some a serious no-no, he has resources and the time he can tap that will get him info not readily available at the time.

Both cases run concurrently and are simultaneously immersive.

I love the way the author manages to bring in a little backstory to explain the history of the persons in the foreground. The support characters are always lively and well developed, but it’s that voice of Bosch that provides that rich storytelling experience we’ve come to expect in a Connelly crime thriller.

This installment also includes Bosch’s half-brother Mickey Haller, the Lincoln Lawyer, a legal thriller spin-off made even more popular as a series on Netflix. It’s fun to dip into the legal side of his case and the necessary police procedures it will take to get the case to court.

I also appreciate his references to the freeway system allowing cross-town travel at snail speeds and the history of the different neighborhoods. It makes the city come alive in the imagination.

The double plot is done very well providing lots of twists and turns and both manage to converge successfully to conclusion.

I always think, “Alright, that has to be his best.” Then I read another and think the same. This one is engaging, provides tension and suspense with both stories having you root for a satisfying outcome. I don’t know how he manages it, but it always does.

Enjoying a couple of his other series as well, also listening to both Renée Ballard and The Lincoln Lawyer.

My Review:

The best part of this audiobook was the authenticity of characters the author brought to her fiction account of what might have actually happened to set off the Hindenburg in a fiery explosion that crashed to the ground within thirty seconds. Of the ninety-seven persons aboard, there were sixty-two survivors, among whom were two boys named Werner, eight years (a passenger) and fourteen years (the cabin boy). The two dogs did not survive.

With the possible exception of today’s school children, is there anyone not familiar with the story of this amazing 1937 German sixteen-story hydrogen blimp that burned into a molten heap in a field in New Jersey?

The real reason for the explosion was never determined, however, theorizing a possible leaking gas cell.

That’s okay, as this riveting narrative captures people from the original passengers and crew and creates a possible scenario and a fascinating read. Atmospheric—of course. It cruised at an altitude of 650 feet but could reach about 1500 feet if needed and the descriptions of the interior, not just passenger areas, but crew quarters and engine compartments are detailed.

The author used passenger and crew names and if they survived in real life, they survived in her book.

Interesting to have the POVs of the main characters, their reason for being on the ship, hopes, and dreams. The cabin boy is especially engaging, as is a young woman attendant (the first on a dirigible). Not all are sympathetic and the suspicions, tensions ramp up with each chapter and each new POV.

The storyline as it progresses into the climax takes on a frenetic pace, particularly after the initial explosion. Heart in throat, it’s hoped one of your favorite characters (or person in real life) survives.

And it’s amazing any did. Sixty-two (twenty-three passengers, thirty-nine crewmen).

I applaud the research that went into the book and loved the epilogue that explained many more details and specific reasons for the way she spun the novel. Whether you’re a fan of historical fiction or not, this is a gripping book, the examination of a zeppelin airship, its attempt to land following a local thunderstorm, and the reason why it was filled with highly flammable hydrogen. The Hindenburg disaster “marked the abrupt end of the airship era.”*

My second audiobook by this author, as good as the first The Frozen River. You can’t go wrong with either. I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

My Review:

Boy howdy, do I love getting back to that Longmire we’ve come to know and love along with all his cronies—all admittedly getting older (aren’t we all)—crustier around the edges but finally (in Longmire’s case) ready to admit he might need to slow down a bit.

The nineteenth installment of this successful series finds Longmire still recovering a bit from the sustained injuries received in Book 18, Hell and Back. Gees, he’s how old now? Actually, considering retirement? But first, he must take Dog and search for a woman whose GPS left her stranded and lost in the mountains with a storm coming on. He and Dog find her, but Dog also finds an interesting artifact stuck in the crags that will start a deep dive into an old, cold case. And it appears one that his grandfather might have been involved in.

Longmire is seldom on a simple case. No. This one is the same—the deeper the dive, the stickier the wicket. The reader is treated to most of the favorites, from Henry Standing Bear of the Red Pony to Vic, his deputy. In a moment of quiet reflection with Vic, he manages to make hash of what should have been a well-thought-out and tender, emotional moment. She disappears—pretty much the rest of the novel.

The reader is also treated to that wonderful narrator’s voice of George Guidall who sells the concept and the character of Longmire so well, it’d be impossible not to become engaged with both him and Absaroka County.

The investigation, as we’ve come to expect in a Longmire narrative, gets real complex real quick. There are flashbacks that fill in scenes from his grandfather’s life in the forties and the situation that appears to lead to monumental money chicanery that might involve billions. That’s B—billions of dollars—and an excellent reason to convince Longmire to knock off with the investigation already!

You know he won’t.

Love the mystery, love the well-plotted and paced storyline, the Western good ole boy but don’t take me for a fool, conversations. Yes, prose among the subtle conversations and developments with the characters (think Vic). Always another story in there and they don’t get old. This one is back on track after a couple slightly tilt, but can’t say I didn’t enjoy them as well.

My Review:

Can a non-fiction historical book be as exciting and fast-paced as an action and adventure fiction novel? Yes!

This is a heavily researched, graphically detailed, narrative of the 1741 British warship that set out on a secret mission at a time when they were engaged in a war with Spain. Believed to have been sunk in a horrific storm off Patagonia, of the eighty-one original survivors of the sinking, thirty survivors washed up on the shores of Brazil followed six months later by three additional survivors in Chile.

Members of the crew lived in deplorable conditions, some shanghaied on board, only to face sleeping quarters consisting of filthy closely hung hammocks strung from rafters under the deck, contaminated water, rotting or little food and supplies. They endured disease, vermin, infections, and scurvy—the latter of which could have been alleviated had they simply taken on board citrus from an island stop.

The men who eventually made land, some 3,000 miles from their original castaway location were skeletal and near death. They had survived storms on their little Gerry-rigged boat, treacherous currents, lack of nautical location, thirst, cold, and starvation.

What glues the reader to the fast-paced, incredible journey are the little details, the stories of many of the colorful individuals who made up the crew, including the grandfather of the later acclaimed Lord Byron, then 14 years old. Facts regarding the ships, the jargon, and the beautifully described storms have your heart pounding and holding your breath repeatedly.

The survivors struggle with a division of sentiments as to how to proceed and tears at the fabric widen still further. There is deceit, treachery, theft, mutiny, and not wholly unexpected, murder.

When finally back in England, both sides tell very different stories.

The narrator on the audiobook (who does an amazing job) puts the reader squarely in the middle of the men, hanging on for dear life to the lines in raging seas or on the shipwreck island where food is gone and all resources (including native support) has been exhausted. It’s easy to become invested in many of the main characters, and to an extent support characters, and feel their loss if/when they succumb to conditions.

The author brilliantly builds the suspense, amps up the tension, while slipping in small tidbits of history. It’s true with many of these stories, rich in the telling, astonishing tales of human endurance. Sometimes, you just can’t make this stuff up.

My Review:

Another case for biting on the book because of the cover—a dog, of course. Still, once again I’d appreciate some kind of warning re content.

This is the MC moving back to her hometown of Papillon after her escape and vow never to return trope, including the old crush now looking just as fine as before, except that this time he’s looking back.

Jayna Cardet lived on the wrong side of the tracks but managed to go to law school. When she comes back to the small southern town, she discovers she’s on the other side of the courtroom from ex-crush, Quaid Havery, who was the only lawyer in town until she moved back. Her move is meant to be temporary. (She fled a high-powered firm in NY following a messy divorce.)

Of course, his childhood circumstances were better financially and he’s now enjoying a successful life in a town where he was born, grew up, and knows everyone. It’s a cushy life.

The small town setting is typical, everyone knows everyone and their business. Gossip is the major recreation and it makes for some interesting support characters. In addition to discovering they are opposing counsel, they also discover a contentious and steamy sparks-flying relationship.

Besides the case each is handling, both have major family issues and when they aren’t steaming up the windows, enjoy a lot of pillow talk. Having gotten his or her side of the problem, the other can view it dispassionately and share unbiased, helpful thoughts.

The case they are opposing is a hoot and probably what kept me reading despite the romance description that goes from Hallmark to X-rated pretty quick. Nooo, I don’t need the graphic details—I have an imagination—let me use it instead. Also, I got a little tired of her whining about how her plans were to leave town. Poor baby.

So, yes, if you enjoy hot and heavy in a fairly predictable storyline, you’ll enjoy this contemporary romance. The lawsuit is almost worth it. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t for me.

My Review:

Well, hang on, bc it doesn’t take long with this sometimes over-the-top audiobook narrator to promise a wild ride!

Apparently the normal setting for this ex-cop now private detective is Minneapolis, Minnesota, a complete world away from SoCal. Like a NorCal native plunked into the moss-draped trees of the south, it’s a culture shock—very much what happens to Nils Shapiro when he travels to Hollywood to check on the grandson of matriarch Beverly Mayer. I love a good storyline peppered with humor throughout and this narrative pushes that button often.

Grandson, Ebben Mayer’s financée was obviously murdered, but perhaps she was not the intended target. As Nils talks, pretty much non-stop, investigative steps are explained and easily followed but the complex mystery isn’t so easily solved. The characters are well developed and the LA basin becomes a moving visceral part of the well-plotted and paced tale.

I really enjoyed the Minnesotan as he valiantly tries to understand the LA mentality, come to terms with time on the road rather than miles and of course the suntanned beautiful people and their quirky Hollywood culture.

New author and series for me, but I guess if you have to bumble into the one-off (an MC definitely out of his normal haunt) as I did, you might well enjoy it too! Guess I’ll have to go find one where he works a case in his own backyard so I can compare.

My Review:

Holy moly, how have I missed this author? I do enjoy legal thrillers, but this dual POV had me from the first page with two unique characters that kept me absolutely super-glued to the page. Alternate POVs between protagonist and antagonist. Not really anything new with that ploy—it was the characters; honed, crafted, molded into street-wise attorney and brilliant despot.

Eddie Flynn is the conman turned lawyer and he’s been asked to help defend one of the biggest names in the movie business on trial for murdering both his wife and her associate. Eddie is pretty sure that Robert Solomon didn’t do it. One thing Eddie is good at with his experience on the other side—people—and their “tells.” Bobbie is innocent.

Joshua Kane meanwhile has set in motion another of his well-crafted dramas. He loves it, the planning, the plotting, the manipulation—like marionettes on a string.

While the POV alternates chapters, the reader is soon embroiled in the diabolical cunning of the clever and cruel Kane and the push-back of Flynn. He may be a step behind but not for long. Flynn is great for leading the reader on his investigation in descriptive show, not tell, and we get an inkling of the mind that thinks out of the box with cunning reasoning and deductive power.

Kane has maneuvered his way bit by deadly bit to be part of the jury pool. The tension rises quickly as you realize how he will handle any further impediments to his succession into the box.

There are twists, gasps with totally unexpected turns and the already fast pace ramps up the urgency. Loved the courtroom drama, the behind-the-scenes action, and the blood pressure-spiking conclusion. More than a legal procedural, crime thriller, courtroom drama, it’s a heart-pounding ride through the mind of a one-of-a-kind character.

Coming in without reading the first two or three? So did I. But it made no difference. I had no problem following along other than now I’ll want to go back and play catch up.

Adam Sims does an outstanding job of capturing those opposing voices and making them real. I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.
