Brigid had amassed plenty of admirers, and there were tangled relationships within the group. But perhaps there is something more complex than jealousy at play. The rabbit’s foot, the severed hand, the coinciding meteor shower—the deeper Dimpna and Detective Sargeant Cormac O’Brien investigate, the more ominous the signs seem to be, laced with a warning that Dimpna fears it will prove fatal to overlook.

My Review:

I admit it.

I gave Book 1 of Ms O’Connor’s new County Kerry series, No Strangers Here, to the CE to read. Of course he loved it! I was introducing him to one of my favorite series authors. This time, I grabbed it for myself. So glad I did.

First, I tripped over the main character’s name every time I saw it—pronounced it just as it looked–a little awkward and the first time I’ve seen that name in an Ireland novel. Dimpna is a veterinarian but somehow she manages to get into the middle of some high local drama, the first of which is the hit-and-run of a beloved elderly local.

Dimpna was told about a caravan’s shenanigans, loud and irreverent, shortly before his death. Then here comes Brigid, a beauty and part of the caravan’s occupants, clutching an injured hare livid with wild stories of someone obtaining rabbit’s feet while they are still alive. Just the visual gave me the willies!

“Brigid was nothing like his mam. His mam was a storm; Brigid was the rainbow after.”

Then events turned even darker upon the discovery of the woman, herself the victim of someone who would mutilate a bunny. Normally, this time of year, the Dingle peninsula is full of tourists and with a major impending meteor shower set to provide a wild display, the area fever is worse than during a full moon.

The storyline gets complex quickly as Dimpna and Detective Sargeant Cormac O’Brien follow the clues. There are twists and red herrings. There are great characters as well as peripheral characters associated with the caravan that keep the narrative lively and atmospheric. I love the peek into old Ireland and have no problem engaging. The prose is spirited.

I’ve enjoyed the author’s cozy mysteries for some time, but really liking this new series; graphic bordering on noir, thrilling and suspenseful. Love the lore and mystery.

Recommended for those who enjoy stories written by and about Ireland or any mysteries set in an exotic locale.

My Review:

My step into the author that the CE sampled last year, this one in the middle of an established somewhat hard-boiled series. I was attracted to the Pacific Northwest location of the San Juan Islands on the coast of Seattle, a gorgeous historic oceanside area.

In this episode, Special Agent Matt Costa and Detective Kara Quinn join with the rest of the FBI team following the explosion of a sunset charter cruise in Friday Harbor. They begin by looking at those individuals who were killed by the bombing and there is also the question of whether or not the target was directed against the West End Charter Company.

They have been joined this time by Catherine Jones, an FBI forensic psychiatrist, who immediately clashes with Kara. Kara has pulled herself up by her bootstraps, has LA street smarts, and finds Catherine’s grating methods ill-conceived and laced by over-education rather than real-time experience. Catherine is the perfect antagonist, proves to be the irritation focus in the foreground while the team quietly works in the background to pick apart the bits of the what, why, and who.

The bombing is a hook that serves to lay the plot for the complex storyline but I had a problem engaging in Kara who proves rough around the edges bordering on crude, the obvious antithesis of Catherine. I felt the narrative bogged down somewhat by all the in-fighting and found my attention wavering. The novel could have been shorter and carried more punch.

As the plot adds additional persons of interest and the body count rises, it becomes clear there is another layer that feels like it is reaching a bit far. It does find a solid conclusion but at the loss of my interest.

The CE read North of Nowhere last year, our first experience with this author and narrator, and one that left him a bit exasperated. I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

My Review:

I love it when one of my favorite series pops up with a new one. This one seemed rather inspired, full of prose, quotables, and down home philosophy.

While I tripped over the name of Grackle Tree Farm every time I read it, the plot is a good one and there is a lot going on. The doggies have an active part—love Elvis and Suzy Bear.

Love the atmospherics in this particular episode. The author knows how to weave in the texture, suspense, the unknown. It builds tension and multiplies interest in the characters, who are mysterious and engaging. Particularly invested in their efforts to secure the ownership of the farm—sounded so neat I wanted a tour.

“…private roads, private being Yankee-speak for unpaved.”

The mysteries are interesting, the backstories clever and complex. There are twists and pushes into the poetry world I’d never consider otherwise. Romance language is interwoven as easily as English.

“The ghosts that stalk us are the secrets we cannot keep, the trespasses we cannot forgive, the truths we cannot bury.”

I really liked the progress that Mercy and Troy made this time and can’t wait to discover what they do with the property. Never hurts to catch up on Elvis either. He is an awesome canine character, as is Suzy Bear, both are so different yet so competent in their separate roles.

I read The Wedding Plot in August 2022 and had a bit of a problem with the pacing. This one keeps interest throughout, no sags in the middle, is well-paced.

My Review:

Daisy Fortune is getting very nervous about her ability to continue with the PI agency left to her by her father, who had achieved some notoriety during his heyday.

Worried she’ll lose the business and wondering what she’ll do next, she is unexpectedly engaged by a wealthy woman who appears to be lost until she confirms she is looking for her agency to discover what happened to her recently departed fiancé. Well, yeah, doesn’t she need the money? Daisy starts packing but doesn’t realize she’ll end up on an island in Greece.

The young Jacob Vandiveer was a spoiled, uber rich male used to getting what he wanted, when he wanted. The holdings of the super rich, including the palatial estate, were beyond anything Daisy could imagine though she almost doesn’t succeed in even gaining entry. Once in, with fits and starts, she begins her investigation mostly contained within the grounds, the employees, friends, and any relatives that might have attended the party on the yacht at which he was found deceased.

My first experience with this author and this being Book 1, I thought I got in on the ground floor of a new series! The writing style is fairly simple and the installment can be an easy, fast read. Not a particularly complex plot, there are twists, but it’s easy to guess who is going to be the perp.

Daisy is not fully developed and few of the support characters are either. I’m sure Daisy will evolve with further installments. The other characters won’t be reoccurring sidekicks although there is a possible introduction to a love interest. There is, however, the suggestion of a thread that her father was not able to solve—that of her missing brother that I suspect will factor into further installments.

The conclusion wrapped up most of the loose threads, no problem there, but I was astounded that with the hefty check she received from the patriarch for solving his son’s murder, it only allowed her to pay past due and current bills—cover the next few months. My God, how much does it cost to keep a low-rent PI office open? I’ll bite on Book 2 (and I see it was published in February, Books #3 and 4 May and June respectively), see where this is going, but hope it gets a little more complex and creates interesting reoccurring characters besides Daisy. Right now I can’t decide if she’s milk toast or a self-assured and competent PI.

My Review:

The author loves to write about secrets and I must admit, they do create interest. In this case, there are multiple secrets.

Riley MacPherson’s father died recently and she returns home to clean out and dispose of all his belongings, the collections, his house. The problem is, she stumbles upon something that has her stopped in the middle of the work to sort out what appears to be a contradiction regarding the death of her older sister when she was a toddler.

There are few she can talk to regarding what happened all that time ago, and even her brother (suffering from PTSD) is loathed to discuss it nor help with the cleanup. She does manage to glean some clues, however, and begins the slow and steady climb to the truth.

This is one where you know or can predict the secret or secrets and just wait for the main character to figure it out. Of course, there are those who push the other side, the RV people, her brother, who balances out nicely with those who would help, although the two who were supposed to help with the house were just annoying.

I had a little difficulty with the family dynamics and wondered if it could really ring true. The stories of the sister and the explanation for her suicide were an obvious diversion and a rather weak one at that but didn’t do much to cover what was really suspected. The conclusion steamed in, explained everything and was quietly swept under the rug. Yeah, not wholly satisfying.

I listened to Big Lies in a Small Town in 2021; absolutely loved it and thought the growth in her storytelling is evident. I downloaded a copy of this much earlier audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

My Review:

Yes, it’s true that I’ve become a die-hard fan of Kate Quinn’s solidly amazing female historical protagonists—and BONUS—based on true stories!

I always appreciate her notes regarding the extensive and fascinating research into the woman that becomes the legend. And then Kate performs her magic.

In this case, the storyline surrounds the growth of young Mila Pavlichenko from single mother to storied war sniper. Mila carefully strives to be both mother and father to her young son after she splits from a domineering, (mentally) abusive husband. Thinking that a young man should be taught about weapons as a father would do his son, she seeks to learn enough about guns that she can share the respect as well as the skill with him.

But she quickly learns she is good at it.

Very good.

And when war with Hitler finds Russia, she joins the fight—not as a nurse or admin assistant—but as a sniper and is soon known as Lady Death.

While she decries her count, the record of 300 does not go unnoticed, by either her own country or the Nazis. It is decided she might be better (safer) sent with a delegation to the US in an effort to enlist the efforts to set up another front.

The characters are amazing. From Mila to her lovers (the soon-to-be ex, the perfect foil), as well as the snippets of Eleanor Roosevelt. The descriptions of the isolation, the targets, the atmosphere draws you in.

Much of the narrative is posed as fiction and then juxtaposed against a “memoir” that sounds directly from Mila’s pen. The difference in interpretation of the event produces a few lighter moments although this storyline presents a somber telling devoid of much of the humor found in either The Rose Code or The Huntress. I learned as much about war and what women are capable of in this as the former two novels.

I listened to The Huntress in January and was totally sold on this author’s dedication to writing strong and dedicated women warriors. They are gripping and engaging entertainment and I can’t wait until the next one. The narrator is amazing.

I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

My Review:

Some books are too long; others you hate to see end. This one fell under the category of the latter.

What an amazing immersion into 1940 Britain starring down the barrel of the impending fight with the Nazis!

From two wildly different backgrounds come Osla; debutante, privileged, and beautiful. She’s had the advantage of having had an exclusive education resulting in the fluency in German that puts her square into the sights of Bletchley Park. From the other side of the tracks, East End London poverty comes Mab who is hiding secrets that left scarring on her soul but not her brain and she is called to work codebreaking machines.

The two, finding a rooming house not far from Bletchley Park, are introduced to Beth—spinster, mousy Beth, kept firmly under her mother’s thumb. But she is brilliant with puzzles and both Osla and Mab are quick to see the potential for her work at BP as well. It is her chance to be independent, separate from her mother, discover her worth.

The three bond quickly, each in their own niche, and find the work both incredibly difficult and rewarding at the same time. They are part of something big, monumentally big. They do astonishing work under strict secrecy laws that save a lot of lives and they manage to survive the war, their friendship intact until tragedy strikes.

The storyline splits timelines. It is now 1947 and post-war London finds the three still estranged, each having moved on in their private lives. Only Beth remains tied to the years in Bletchley Park—and she is now three years in an asylum facing a radical surgical procedure that will forever alter her life (and her memory) unless she can find the traitor that lived and worked with them in BP (and is responsible for her admission to the asylum). Osla and Mab are the only persons she can trust, who have knowledge of the conditions, and the people they worked with. She absolutely must convince them to help her.

First, the war time conditions, the rations, the bombs, even the music, and the reader is plunked into the middle of it. The three have the kind of bond somewhat experienced by their male counterparts but the rip between them was extreme. Still, something nags at them regarding the details and they all search their memories for significant moments. What if she’s right and there was a traitor? Is he still active in that position?

Was there a traitor?

The three main characters are intensely engaging and their friendship is enviable. The support characters work well, adding depth to the storyline, cementing a complete vision of the time, the area, and the tension. The well-plotted, paced narrative provides twists, snappy 40s dialogue and sensibilities. It’s complex, swinging between the timeline, and thrilling. The writing is punctuated with expressive prose.

Hooked from the beginning, you’ll find yourself lost in this book to the end. The audiobook is deliciously narrated—each of the characters so well developed—easy to visualize. I also enjoyed the epilogue—the explanation of the characters, both fictional and historical, details about the facility. The author had employed untold hours of research to make it so authentic and the narrator is amazing.

I read The Huntress in January and was totally sold on this author’s dedication to writing strong and dedicated women warriors. They are gripping entertainment.

Shadow Gap, Alaska is the perfect remote getaway in Alaska. Grier Brenner is there getting away from an international group trying to kill him. His problem is exacerbated by rogue CIA operatives who also are hunting him. With federal credentials, they have seemingly endless resources.

Chief Autumn Long has just taken over as Chief of Police for the small town but very large area. She tries to stay aloof but has a problem with Grier, she is falling for him. He captures her heart by saving a drowning girl in the frigid waters of the sound but the rescue puts a big target on his head.

The author unwinds this tale with a master storyteller’s efficiency. Three very well-placed international agents are trying to kill Grier after they extract the location of their prize from him. Autumn works the case while trying to protect Grier from the killers. People keep dying in this small town. More in the last few weeks than in the last 20 years. Grier seems to be a murder magnet.

Autumn’s father was the former Chief of Police of the territory but has been wounded by the killers. The remote location puts Grier more and more in the cross-hairs of the trio’s sights. Can Autumn protect Grier and discover the reason for their vendetta?

This novel has no downtime. I found it difficult to take a break for supper because every page magnified the tension. Enjoy the read, you will not be disappointed! 5 stars – CE Williams
