A Tom Rollins Thriller Book 11

#1 New Release in War & Military
Rosepoint Publishing: Five stars 5 stars

Book Blurb:

Tom goes up against a powerful militia. Turns out they’re the least of his problems.

Ghost Team by Paul HeatleyTom Rollins gets news that an old Army buddy, Adam Lineker, has killed himself. But at the funeral, another friend confides that he doesn’t believe the suicide story – he thinks Adam was murdered.

Sticking around the small town of Samson to investigate, Tom goes up against the disinterested and hostile sheriff, and finds an ally in Adam’s therapist, herself an ex-deputy.

Tom soon discovers that Samson has a lot of unsavory elements. A militia is based nearby, and they’re intimidating the townsfolk. Mysterious strangers are tailing Tom and watching his every move.

But how does all this connect back to Adam? What was he involved in?

As he digs for the truth, Tom comes under increasing pressure from the militia. Undaunted, he pushes back. And only then realizes there are bigger players involved and the bloodthirsty and well-armed militia may actually be the least of his problems.

But Tom presses on, determined to find out what really happened to Adam. And when he does, there’ll be hell to pay.

His Review:

A military squad is pinned down in a trench in Afghanistan.  Lorne Henkle, Adam’s buddy, is badly wounded by an RPG. He begs Adam to leave him and save himself. The U.S. military protocol is never to leave a fellow soldier behind. Despite begging from his buddy to leave him, Adam will have none of it.

That was a number of years ago. The pair have gone back home and are trying to make a life for their families. The road block is that the Taliban have sworn a blood oath to avenge their fellow soldiers killed by this pair!

Ghost Team by Paul HeatleyThe small town of Samson was very peaceful until the drug lord chose this location for the control center of his drug operations. Adam and Lorne became a real thorn in his side, but he has a convenient hit squad that should make quick work of eliminating the problem.

The squad of nine people is not expected to have a problem with them and they will take over the town as soon as the two are eliminated. The local sheriff seems incapable or unwilling to reduce the threat. He is close to retirement and is not going to die by trying to save these two American veterans!

C E WilliamsThis book is very well written and points out the problems faced by many veterans who come back home to a family that has changed and a community that could not give a flying farkle for them. The drug gang hit squad will not allow the town to be protected nor the business plan to fail but they did not count on special operations veterans! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. 5 stars – CE Williams

Splinter by Paul McHugh – #BookReview – #militarythrillers

Book Blurb:

On the shore of Oslo Fjord, teenagers Kristian Thorsen and Helene Berg
watch in shock and horror as their world is upended by a Nazi invasion.

Splinter by Paul McHughDriven apart by tragedy and trauma, Helene and Kristian take different paths to join the Resistance, but fate soon swirls them back together. Like many who rebel against the invaders, they must become spies and covert warriors on the fly, making huge mistakes along the way. Yet even on such a tortuous path, they are surprised by moments of grace.

When Helene manages to steal secret Nazi plans for precision bombing of
England, Kristian launches a life-or-death mission to get this crucial
intelligence across the North Sea and into Allied hands. He’ll try anything to
defeat the fascist occupiers—and to win Helene’s heart.

His Review:

Norway declared itself neutral during WW II. Germany needs Norway’s fjords to hide and protect its mighty warships, therefore, Hitler offers to shield the citizens of Norway with Germany’s mighty warships. They send in the SS and other secret police to round up and dispatch any saboteurs that may be hiding in plain sight.

Splinter by Paul McHughKristian and his friend Helena believe that the occupation of their homeland by the Nazis is in fact an act of war against their country. Norway clings to its’ position of neutrality despite the presence of so many soldiers and naval troops. The citizens of Norway resist this occupation during a war they are not a part of.

Kristian decides to assist the Allies by providing troop and naval exercise information to the British. Having access to this information is vital to the ongoing war effort.

The Germans attack and even try to sink Norway’s fishing fleet. Kristian winds up providing valuable intel regarding the activities of the Nazi war machine to the British. This is accomplished by rowing a small kayak hundreds of kilometers across the North Sea to Allied forces. The voyages are harrowing and illuminate the tough and heroic conditions encountered by the patriots.

C E WilliamsThis story is very illuminating and reveals the tenacity of the Norwegians. The read is fast and very satisfying. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

Paul McHugh - authorThe Author: Paul McHugh, Bio

Q: How do you accurately summarize 40 years of professional writing?

A: I can’t! Best I can do is hit a few of the high points!

One rousing pinnacle was publication of “Deadlines,” which won the 2011 Best Mystery award from the Bay Area Independent Publishers Association and the 2011 Best Mystery prize from National Indie Excellence Awards.

“Deadlines,” (“a novel of murder, conspiracy and the media”) is based on author Paul McHugh’s 22 years at the San Francisco Chronicle as lead outdoor feature writer, editor and reporter. In that period, he also won awards for his environment, resource use and sports coverage.

[truancated]

Throughout his career, McHugh has maintained an adventurous outdoor lifestyle that informs his writing and invigorates his life. He was on the U.S. National Kayak Surfing Team in 1988, when it won a world championship at an international contest in Ireland. He ran all major rapids of the Grand Canyon on a 276-mile voyage in a whitewater kayak to celebrate his birthday in 2000. In 2005, he undertook his most ambitious project for the Chronicle, launching a 40-day, 400-mile sea kayak voyage from the Oregon border to San Francisco Bay. En route, he filed 36 stories in print and online, as well as five videocasts and four podcasts, covering environmental and social issues along the North Coast.

In addition, McHugh is an accomplished public speaker and stage performer. He has given keynote addresses at the 2007 Trails & Greenways Conference in San Francisco, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute annual dinner in 2008, the California Biodiversity Council annual dinner in 2009, and gave three visiting writer lectures at U.C. Davis in 2010

He has been interviewed about his novel “Deadlines” in 2010 by Michael Krasny on KQED-FM, Rick Kleffel on KUSP-FM, Russell Sadler on Jefferson Public Radio, and Jeff Callahan on Capitol Public Radio. In 2011, he has presented solo speaking performances at the Mark Twain Cultural Center at Lake Tahoe, at the Gualala Art Center, and benefit lectures for the Siskiyou Mountain Foundation in Mount Shasta and the Solano Library Foundation in Fairfield.

McHugh was born in Homestead, Florida. He has a summa cum laude degree in English from Florida State University in Tallahasee.

Snapshot by Don Keith and George Wallace – #BookReview – #SeaStories

Rosepoint Publishing: Five Stars 5 stars

(The Hunter Killer Series Book 8)

Book Blurb:

When an international crisis erupts in eastern Russia, the US Navy must race to avoid a nuclear apocalypse.

The Sea of Okhotsk north of the Japanese Home Islands is a cold and unforgiving place. Its icy, dark waters can change from a glass-smooth calm into a raging maelstrom in a heartbeat. The shores surrounding the sea, home to Siberian tigers and prowling wolf packs, are equally forbidding. Far from Mother Russia, beyond Siberia, it is a mostly forgotten land—even though it is the home of the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet.

It is here that the Children of the Gulags, descendants of Stalin’s infamous prison camps and long-time inhabitants of this harsh land, have slowly maneuvered into position. Their leaders are convinced they can now carve out and lay claim to a homeland of their own. But they must fan the flames of international tension among the Chinese, North Koreans, the Russians, NATO, and the Americans. Pitting them all against each other as the Children attempt to wrest away their new nation from Russia.

Thrust into a simmering conflict that threatens to spill over into nuclear Armageddon, head of US Naval Intelligence Admiral Jon Ward is faced with the impossible task of keeping the peace between nations. Forced into a game of intrigue and sinister political maneuvering, he must utilize the stealthy US submarines, SEALs, and other US assets to extinguish a conflict at the edge of the world—all while trying to give hope to an historically oppressed people in their own dreams of freedom.

Admiral Ward is about to face the toughest mission of his career..and one wrong move could ignite a nuclear war.

His Review:

The “Silent Service” utilizes vessels which ply the sea in secret. Clandestine voyages are essential for the security and safety of every country. Russia has a very sophisticated submarine service. Their equipment and ships are comparable to the United States in many respects. This novel touches upon these services.

Snapshot by Don Keith and George WallaceThe Sea of Okhotsk is considered by Russia to be within their sovereign territory. The United States maintains the 12 mile limit and considers any water beyond the 12 mile limit of any country to be international waters. Russia considers their limit to be 150 miles from their shores. The above-mentioned sea is totally surrounded by Russian lands and is therefore considered part of Mother Russia. Our submarines go into these waters often to monitor our potential enemy.

Henrietta Foster is the Commander of the submarine Gato which routinely enters this sea to protect U.S. interests and to monitor Russian shipping. Russia is not happy about this event. Gato wants to identify some of the more modern anti-submarine warfare systems aboard the Russian submarines. Acoustical equipment can identify most ships around the world by the sounds of the machinery and equipment on the craft.

C E WilliamsThe Seventh Fleet sends in a task force to test the responses of the Russians. The potential for catastrophic responses by both sides is always a factor. These writers illuminate the problem very well and the novel presents the ever-present danger. I found this book intriguing and exciting as the situation unfolded. I recommend it to anyone interested in world affairs and naval tactics. 5 stars – CE Williams

Happy Mother's Day

Operation Storm King by Elliott Sumers – #BookReview – #historicalfiction

A Pulse-Pounding WWII Thriller

Book Blurb:

Operation Storm King is an explosive alternative history about the death of President Franklin Roosevelt. It will take you on a heart-stopping journey, challenging your view of reality.

Operation Storm King by Dr Elliot SumersHistorians tell us that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died of a stroke in Warm Springs, Georgia. Operation Storm King tells of a shocking, yet entirely plausible alternative version, an audacious Nazi raid to kidnap FDR from West Point.

Starting in January 1945, “Operation Storm King” follows a small team of Nazi commandos as they penetrate New York Harbor, and sail up the Hudson River in the revolutionary Type XXI U-Boat. Their mission: kidnap the American President and force the United States into an alliance with Germany against Russia. When FDR’s heroic but ultimately suicidal actions foil the plot, Vice-President Truman covers up the kidnapping, and creates the myth of FDR’s peaceful death to prevent public panic.

Seventy-five years later, Mai Zhao, a hard driving woman West Point cadet discovers the shattered U-Boat wreck in the Hudson River, and uncovers its shocking secrets. The U.S. national security apparatus goes on alert. Zhao’s unstoppable efforts to uncover the truth threatens to undermine the American public’s faith in government. Washington mobilizes powerful political and legal forces to stop her.

With fierce battles and sacrifices, action-packed scenes, and well-crafted characters, “Operation Storm King” is a must-read for fans of explosive wartime adventures, gritty historical war fiction, and riveting alternative history epics. For fans of best-selling authors like Philip K. Dick, Robert Harris, or Tom Clancy and those looking for a detailed techno-thriller, Operation Storm King is a book you won’t want to put down.

Follow the desperate mission, and decide for yourself what really happened!

His Review:

Attending the United States Military Academy at West Point is the pinnacle of a career in the army. Teaching at the academy is a high point in an educator’s career as well. The premier student is Kim Zhao and her history teacher is Professor Goldstein. They work well together in the classroom and enjoy time together in their off-time.

Operation Storm King by Dr Elliot SumersA weekend away, diving in the Hudson River sounds like a great release from the everyday tensions at the academy. The dive reveals an astonishing find, an old submarine in the river across from the citadel! They both know they will be famous after revealing this find. But they have to be cautious. What treasures could this sunken craft contain and how did it get there?

Anything of this nature awakens the thirst of the U.S. Government. The CIA and NSA become involved in ascertaining what the object is doing there. Dr. Goldstein and Ms. Zhao are sequestered and admonished to tell nobody of their find. The government agencies hint at lifelong imprisonment or worse! The most astounding find of their lives is now controlled by clandestine elements of the U.S. Government.

This book is fascinating and I could not put it down. Read and enjoy! 4.5 stars
