Getting Old Ain’t For Sissies

You’ve heard that old saying, “Getting Old Ain’t For Sissies.” I’m learning it’s true.

I wrote recently about our impending move from Goodyear, Arizona to Indiana to stay temporarily with our son until we could find a home and my husband employment. The move itself went very smoothly; two guys to help efficiently load, cooperative weather gods, and quick exit walk-through of the apartment. The adventure began quietly enough with my driving our little car following DH (in RV vernacular–“dear husband”) in the Budget truck.  Then we reached Kansas.budget-truck

When have we ever been in Kansas that we weren’t taking our life in our hands? Tornado force winds location and warnings repeatedly broadcast every few minutes, rain so hard visibility was down to tail lights in front of you (until a semi passed by), traffic so horrendous it took 1 1/2 hours to navigate Kansas City, and the threat of hail stones large enough to maim farm animals if they hadn’t found a gully deep enough to shelter themselves from the tornadoes.

How things change as we age! First remote health issues begin to arise, the energy fades, focus on goals change; creation of the “bucket list” recently made famous by Jack Nicholson. (And, yes, I STILL want to learn to play a piano!) But now number one becomes survive.

Just a year ago, I was finishing up the manuscripts I would publish for my grandfather, marketing and promoting them, participating in author communities and seeking sales. Two years ago, I was still riding my motorcycle, contentedly enjoying the perfumed air, the power of my bike, the camaraderie of the girls in my WOW group (who are still using the website I set up), and riding with the PGR (Patriot Guard Riders) proudly honoring the memory of my brother lost to the Navy during ‘Nam in ’67. mission-2-14

Now a Kansas storm had me scared. Whaa?! I’ve ridden in storms that bad! (Not enough visibility to see well enough to pull off the road [Missouri], lightning strikes setting fires around us [Nevada], and hail so thick it was like riding on ball bearings.) Now we are basking in Indiana temps, cool winds, sunny skies, nothing but green around us, and I’m riding four wheels (instead of three)–NOT the kind I dreamed of when I considered trading in my aging Beemer.

  1. Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking my post on 20 benefits of the sun. Welcome to the Midwest. I think you’ll find it more pleasant to live in than most places in the country. As a nearly lifelong Chicagoan, I used to think we had the worst weather in the country. With the benefit of the Weather Channel, I have learned we actually have some of the best. If you can forget that you are adding years, you will find things go smoother. Age is mental as well as physical. Good luck!

    1. Thanks, Tony, for taking the time to comment on my blog post. Appreciate the caution that age is mental as well as physical. So true. Hubby and I are blessed with good health and are still very active. Comparing today’s weather predictions with those of our previous location (Goodyear–117 degrees), I’d say this is actually quite pleasant and a relief. I’m looking forward to experiencing a full four seasons–a serious change from the desert southwest.

  2. That Greenery is nice, however, means it RAINS alot!!!! Course the promise of lots of fragrant flowers is definitely a PLUS!!! My only concern, is summer hits in a week, then we get lots of rain, but no very cold weather…..no worry over snow and the like. GOD BLESS!!!!
