Book Blurb:

Squeaker and Birdie live in the Pottingers’ house with their beloved owner, 8-year-old Billy, and his parents.

When a feline critter and his henchmen kittens, Catman and the Meows, move into the community, Squeaker and Birdie are kept busy finding evidence of something amiss. During their investigation, they unravel Catman’s diabolical plan that will spell disaster for the humans they love.

To stop him, Squeaker and Birdie must transform into their superhero alter egos, “Ratman and Robin,” and engage Catman and the Meows in a full-on beastly combat straight out of an action movie. Cheese bullets flying, claws landing, bodies slamming, vehicles crashing, a resourceful compilation of action-packed thrill you won’t want to miss!

My Review:

Ratman and Robin by K.A. BoltonNot the first middle-school children’s book I’ve read recently, but possibly one with greater sci-fi/fantasy components (especially fantasy) than the others. If you don’t have a child to read the story to, it’s still a sweet slip back into youthful imagination and reminds you how easy it was to perceive conditions, animals, or events in your mind that age and experience gradually replaced with reality. Too bad, as some times imagination is an appealing respite.

Difficult to get characters fully fleshed in a story of this length, but perhaps not so if you’ve kept in mind that we are talking about a rat (shudder) and a bird. The challenge of the well-plotted narrative is to develop a great, action-packed adventure that would make sense to a child and provide tension and engaging suspense, and it does.

The plot introduces Billy and his family, the Pottinger’s, and generally keeps the dialogue simple whether between humans or between animals, but stays within a relative age bracket for the most part, gradually introducing adult-sized words or verbiage.

Really cute idea for the dastardly deed that Ratman and Robin need to solve–and something that most young’uns could identify with and understand, although I did have a small problem with regard to the decade the adventure might have occurred, as well as a few edit misses. The storyline, however, draws to a happy and successful conclusion, no one more the wiser, although I had to chuckle a bit over the role given Catman and his Meows.

I was given this ebook download by the author following a request and appreciated the opportunity to read for my unbiased review.
