Book 7 A Rain City Legal

My Review:

Not our first experience with this author and, of course, we enjoy the Seattle location of the novel. My motobuddy always called it the “great Northwet” and heaven knows the protagonist as well as the series is named well with an average annual rainfall in the area of 37-39 inches per year.

In this installment, attorney Dan Raine has been retained by an old friend, a judge, who appears to have a sticky wicket with the apparent death of his son’s girlfriend in his upstairs study. Unfortunately, his son’s girlfriend is part of a large local crime family thought to run a number of deadly secrets.

An experienced attorney himself, the author knows his way around the legal system and courtroom procedure, and his main character reflects that expertise. In his years of practice, the MC has also accumulated a number of valuable contacts, a few of whom are happy to return a favor when requested. He is also friends with a bail bondsman with deep pockets and a clever way of negotiation.

The courtroom drama puts you square in the jury box, the legalese explained, and the maneuvering suspenseful. Raine comes off as an intelligent and competent attorney as well as investigator. His moral compass both in and out of the courtroom is held in high regard.

I thought we had a solid verdict and conclusion when the author threw a gotcha at the end I didn’t see coming and almost had to chuckle.

Okay, that was a good one. If you’re a fan of legal thrillers, this one is for you. The CE read two of the installments in this series, the last one being Body of Evidence and loved it. Even if you aren’t, there are always enlightening moments and the plot and pace are programmed to keep your interest in moving pages. It can be read as a standalone.

His Review:

There are many instances in nature where whole countries and even continents have been brought to a standstill. Grid Zero explores this phenomenon in detail. Can our country be totally stopped by a computer attack and be left vulnerable?

Regions of the country are made uninhabitable by hurricanes or natural disasters like floods covering large areas. Commerce stops and delivery of goods and services cease. Could this also happen as a result of computer sabotage? This book points out a very big possibility of such an event.

C E Williams Turning off the electrical delivery to many states could also result in catastrophic loss of goods and services. The loss of hospital services and transportation during the hottest days of summer could result in nearly 3600 deaths a day. Many seniors cannot live without cooler places to retreat to. Their bodies do not have the capacity to handle these issues. Read this book and be shocked by the eye-opening facts. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

Netflix Christmas Movies #ChristmasMovies Favorite #RomComs – #Animation

Introduction

Oh groan, thousands of Christmas videos and movies, from every genre, mysteries to musicals, live actors to animations.

How to choose?

Well, you’re in luck as I’ve consulted lists, viewed and suffered through a few, and compiled a list of four of the more recent releases. Since my major streaming service is Netflix, I checked out the following, but they have many additional suggestions as well.

Of course, you can always resort to a few of the old favorites and many of those, mine as well, include the classic A Christmas Story. You can’t beat that epic line, “You’ll shoot your eye out!” or forget that horrible leg lamp. I tend to avoid romance or sappy stuff, which might eliminate Christmas movies entirely unless you get serious in your search and share.

NETFLIX MOVIES

The Star – November 17, 2017 – Sony Pictures Animation

This is a delightful animation featuring the voices of Steven Yeun as Bo the donkey and Gina Rodriguez as Mary using modern speech and snappy patter. Also included are voices you may recognize, such as Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry. You’ll also enjoy carols by well-known singers such as Mariah Carey. The graphics of the animal-focused adventure capture anthropomorphic expressions and build engagement.

This is an animation adults will enjoy, and I think would work fine as a family-friendly movie and one I’m happy to recommend.

A California Christmas – December 14, 2020

Married collaborators Lauren and Josh Swickard produced the movie, which was written by Lauren, garnering a 52% Rotten Tomatoes.

And, groan, yes, a romance. (sorry)

What can I say? It’s predictable, sappy, and slightly (or supposed to be) rated above a Hallmark Christmas movie. So many creative liberties you are supposed to overlook or ignore, but they added up for me. Sorry, but the Bay area isn’t short-sleeve weather in the wine country in winter. Looking beyond disbelief, however, the characters are varied and interesting. I do get tired of the rich partner paired with a desperate one, but the storyline is entertaining.

If you loved this one, there’s a sequel, A California Christmas-City Lights. I did not view that one, having had enough with the first, but this might just be your cup of tea.

A Boy Called Christmas – November 18, 2021 (Germany)

Another animation featuring a mouse and a boy called Christmas who sets out in search of his father. His father was trying to find HOPE, and Christmas left on a quest to discover the snowbound village of the elves, Elfhelm. Along the way, he confronts a number of obstacles, including a reindeer called Blitzen. He takes with him his pet mouse, Nikolas. (Funny that a mouse shows up in The Star as well.)

Voices of Kristin Wiig (who does an outstanding job) and Maggie Smith who appears as Aunt Ruth are featured. The animation is visually appealing with beautiful landscapes and special effects. The moral of the story stands out for a family-friendly movie, although there are some darker aspects that may not be appropriate for very young impressionable children. Recommended for 4+.

This movie was produced from a book by the same name, penned by Matt Haig in October 16, 2018 and published by Yearling. Highly rated and noted as a fantasy for children. Visit him at matthaig.com and follow @matthaig1 on Twitter.

Meet Me at the Christmas Train Parade – Nov 24, 2023 (Canada) Nov 15, 2025 (US)

Yeah, it’s another RomCom. I went looking for Christmas movies that did not include romance. There are a few. This isn’t one of them. Don’t ask me why, but this one appears to be popular, starring Emma Johnson and Ryan Northcott. I thought the best thing about it was the train. It was magnificent. I can’t fault the gorgeous scenery either, filmed in Alberta, Canada, beautiful snowy mountain views under blue sky, pine boughs bent under the weight of heavy melting snow.

The storyline is predictable; however, the actors are okay (except the boy–annoying), the characters barely engaging. The plot could be interesting but this one missed the execution other than to watch the train chug through the scenery. With so many other movies out there—I’d keep looking.

CONCLUSION

Just these few took some considerable effort. I hope you have some additional suggestions for me. I refuse to watch Home Alone, Miracle on 34^th Street, or It’s a Wonderful Life. Should I resort to Die Hard? (again) In the meantime, I’ll enjoy your reviews of Christmas-time books.

My Review:

Wow, I love the name of this book! That title will stick in the brain and roll easily off your tongue when you speak about it. So how does the rest of the book stack up?

First, I guess we might have expected that Reese would narrate protagonist Maggie McCabe. That decision might have weakened the character somewhat without a professional narrator in the translation from written to spoken word by inflection often either over the top or insufficient. Nowhere did I expect a book authored by Reese to include women cosmetic surgeons, Russian baddies, and biker gangs. (Although I must confess I liked Pork Chop.)

Did Harlan add his drama and suspense only to have Reese decide it was a good thing, so repeat it with her edits? It bogged down somewhere in the middle for me and several times rehashed scenarios we’d already visited before. The dialogue appears to have a difference in origination and is uneven in character.

Goodreads shows more three and four-star reviews than five with a deeply divided reaction to the characters and the pacing. There are as many narrators as characters, including Reese herself as well as one of my favorites, Saskia Maarleveld. Amazon notes in her bio that it is Reese’s debut novel, co-authored.

But What Did AI Say?

For those burning to know (as was I) just how much Reese contributed to that obvious Harlan Coban writing style, AI says it was a true collaboration “where both were involved in the writing process…”

Writing process? Aren’t we also talking plot?? Isn’t that a signature Coban plot and pace?

No, says, AI.

Noted that it was originally Witherspoon’s idea, pitched to Coben who ran with it, obviously “contributing his expertise in plotting and structure…signature twists and suspense. “

But hey, you know how AI can, and often does, make mistakes. You read it? Did you read Coban or Witherspoon?

A Maine Clambake Mystery Book 10

My Review:

When last I tuned in to the Snowden Family Clambake mysteries, the family had decided to renovate the mansion on the Busman’s Harbor land where they hold their seasonal popular clambakes.

Julia Snowden has not quite started prep for another clambake season when the owner of the pottery shop where her sister Livvie works is arrested for the murder of Phinney Hardison in the unit on the other side of her shop. Zoey Butterfield is rather new to Busman’s Harbor and is lobbying for an unpopular pedestrian mall proposal. She and the ole boy had a big row at the town hall meeting the previous evening. Livvie asked Julia for help in the investigation as having found the guy in their shared basement makes it look like a done deal for the cops.

Well, shucks. Where’s my fish story? No fight over lobster traps or clam field? Where’s my perfumed ocean scent hanging in the air over fire coals? I rather missed that.

Okay, well, of course, there are other issues going on, not the least of which the recent breakup with Chris. I was rather ambivalent about him—but now it looks like there might be another prospect in the wind. Julia, however, does have a new friend in Zoey that I assume will appear in future series installments.

I loved Book 9, Shucked Apart, and later read Book 11, Hidden Beneath, and have read a number of her other Maine Clambake mysteries as well as another of her series, but keep coming back to this series with the atmospheric odors of the coast, the vision of the area, and the food—oh my stars—the food! You just can’t get fresh seafood in the Midwest and we must live vicariously through these delightful cozy series.

So, although I understand there is a mud season in Maine, it just didn’t compare to those clambake seasons for me. Mind you, there were recipes in this one as well at the end of the narrative. Somehow, this installment didn’t capture that ocean breeze excitement for me.

His Review:

Serving our country to many is a calling and to others a demand. During the Vietnam War the government reopened the draft and avoiding the war was not an option. It wasn’t for me either.

The first night was an introduction to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, listened to until four in the morning. Staying awake during the recording was impossible for most of us. The next step is the swearing in and then boot camp. After being pretty well scalped, everyone looks the same. Bonds are formed with people you would never associate with under ordinary circumstances. The completion of tasks requires teamwork. Staying alive also requires teamwork and you soon learn to rely upon your brothers in arms.

This book visits the bonds that are formed when the people next to you may hold your future in their hands. This is particularly vital when you are moving forward with people shooting at you. Having someone to think about and love back home gives you a goal to strive for staying alive.

James McDevitt provides a very clear picture of the brotherhood of men in arms. It is a testament to someone who has served and watched someone take a bullet to save the life of a fellow soldier. The pain that their sacrifice causes lives with the survivors for the rest of their lives.

The narrative places you in the middle of the chaos, the boredom, the experience of one who’s been there, seen it, done it—and authentically conveys the emotions. A very thoughtful read and highly recommended to those who enjoy action-packed spell-binding stories. 5 stars – CE Williams

You Love Christmas Themed Books? Great! Here’s Two More

Christmas Reads

I mentioned something last week about the advent of Holiday Books beginning to cross the bloggers’ post paths. I always marvel at the beautiful, colorful book covers. Somehow, though, I’m just not one to read Christmas-themed books and, granted, there are more than just cozy mysteries and Hallmark romances. But yes, this week I found a Traditional Detective Mystery and a Cozy Culinary Mystery that you are bound to love.

This week I discovered a murder mystery read and reviewed by Jen Lucas at Jen Med’s Book Reviews, White Christmas by Mark L Fowler. (Told you they weren’t all candy canes and romance.) I love her review of the story “packed with mystery and misdirection.” It’s a Tyler & Mills Mystery series that takes place in Stoke (UK) and does sound a bit cheeky. There is an amicable relationship between the two, respect, and a sense of humor. Sounds good!

Okay, then Tari Hann over at Cuddle Up With a Cozy Mystery wrote a lovely review for Crescent City Christmas Chaos by Ellen Byron. Yes! We will read a cozy mystery by Ellen Byron because (like Tari) we loved Cajun Country Mysteries. One of my absolute favs. It’s based around New Orleans and always atmospheric to the point of hearing that iconic music and spelling those Cajun fragrances at the street side cafes. Tari says of the protagonist, “Ricki was one busy shopkeeper this Christmas season…She had all her virtual plates spinning in the air as she tackled running the shop, helping her friends with a cookbook project, sleuthing a murder case…”

Who Started This Anyway?

Jodie, of That Happy Reader is again hosting the Christmas Reading Challenge for 2025 that she started in 2022. Her challenge runs from October 1 through December 31 (but you can start any time and read how ever many you want). She loves reading Christmas-themed books AND watching Hallmark Christmas movies! And who knows, I may add a Christmas movie as the CE loves those things.

My Review:

Not my first experience with the author as I’ve read offerings in a couple other series, the most recent being Welcome Aboard, a collaboration.

This short and sweet offering is actually a prequel to the Sisters of the Heart series and through a series of letters to her foster children introduces the five who stood out from the dozens. Of course, not all children were with her long term and these were those with whom she had extended experience from child to adult.

The setting is rustic, rural farm country in Oregon where Jewel and her husband Chuck took in dozens of foster children. It’s a look at not only those who sacrifice to take in children, some in the worst circumstances, but of the children themselves and the stake that is given them to continue.

Each of the letters introduces us to that special someone who stayed until aged out and moved on. Then she continued to follow them, through triumphs and tribulations, marriages, happiness and heartbreak. She wishes for a grand reunion in which each now adult acknowledges the sisterhood that was created in the home that became their shared sanctuary.

It’s an interesting concept, the letters, though I assume would not be everyone’s cup of tea, particularly as it’s a one-way communication, only getting ideas of what the response might have been to the previous letter by the next.

Still, the letter whets the interest in what the girls might be like now, the reunion, and how they might all relate to each other—and to their foster mom. Might very well be something of interest to you and worth checking out. Enjoy unusual domestic fiction? Uncommon concepts of family?
