His Review:

Growing up in Hannibal, Missouri, along the banks of the Mississippi River, was a perfect environment for a dreamer like Samuel Clemens. His love for the river grew to the point where he figured his lifelong dream was to be a riverboat captain. He apprenticed under a captain who groomed him to command the barges down the mighty river. The young Samuel was a romantic dreamer and the job was perfect.

The cry of “Gold, Gold” found in the American River east of Sacramento drew him west and away from his boyhood home. He was always looking for the next big strike to take him away from life’s worries and into a princely lifestyle. He married a beautiful woman after a number of proposals and she was perfect for his needs. She also came with a substantial dowry and helped smooth his business ups and downs.

He worked in Carson City, Nevada, as one of the print setters for the local paper and soon dreamed of a machine that could automate the process. A good portion of his and his wife’s fortunes disappeared down that rat hole of a dream. He possessed a natural wit and excellent speaking skills and went on lecture tours away from his wife and daughters.

Sam had a caustic side and soon turned on people who did not perform as promised and could be extremely acerbic. Chasing the dream of an automated typesetting machine soon resulted in near bankruptcy. Speaking tours saved him and the family from the poor house. A late 19th century depression nearly caused the family to be completely destitute. Living in high style both in the U.S. and abroad was taking every cent they had.

This book describes a life of true love, chasing dreams, and living on the edge. It is mesmerizing and difficult to put down. The major drawback is the length of the book as it gets into aggravating minutiae with their offspring, relationships, and circumstances. Set aside a few weeks if you choose to read it. I tried. Really tried. But finally gave it up at approximately 46%. DNF.

We listened to the audiobook by this author about the life of George Washington on a trip, weighing in at almost 42 hours. If you love digging into biographies, the longer the better, and going back again and again to resume with something akin to an old friend, you may be able to hang in longer than I. 4 Bestseller Publication Lists—Will You Use One to Find Your Next Book Purchase?

It’s been awhile since I discussed bestseller lists. The last, “NYT Bestsellers and Bestselling Authors – Literary Genius or Luck?” concentrated more on how they actually got on that list. I’ll wager it was a great deal more complex than you’d ever imagined, especially given that the status on the list can be kept or lost week to week or even day to day.

I recently read and reviewed another (“instant #1) NYTimes bestseller that hit the Amazon Charts at #9 and was a Reese’s Book Club Pick. (Is it just me or does she pick some duds?) Obviously, I’m well out of the loop. I didn’t care for it. NYTimes bestseller doesn’t necessarily equate a good book. Well, then, who do you trust?

There is no one standard for judging bestsellers as each has a different method of counting sales, or in the instance of the NYTimes—curating the list(? It’s up to the editor).

So, I got to thinking about a few of the other reviews of that book. There were those who agreed with me. Then I got to thinking about the big publishers who print those lists. There used to be five considered to wield the most weight with their bestseller lists. Then The Wall Street Journal dropped out in November, 2023.

Now we look to the big four:

New York Times

Probably the most prominent and the one I discussed previously at length is the New York Times bestsellers list. They’ve published that list since 1931. The NYTimes usually tracks book sales from various sources including national and independent bookstores that includes Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. Both the NYTimes and USA Today look for sales totaling a minimum of 5,000 copies in a single week and is across diverse retailers AND multiple geographic locations. However, the list is a curated list (not necessarily a list of the top sellers) as the editors pick which of those bestselling books to include on the list. (They may include both wholesale and retail sales.) Their system of analyzing sales data is secret.

Does it seem like there are so many more NYTimes bestselling authors these days? Does every other book gain the title of bestseller? Maybe there are a greater number of new bestsellers along with the older ones.

For one thing, there are upwards of eleven categories now of bestsellers (with 20 or so titles per sublist). And two, publishers have cultivated gaming techniques meant to kick sales (engineered sales on launch week)—if even for one week—the title will stick.

What are the eleven bestseller lists?

Good grief! Eleven categories, ten titles per list(?)—that’s a lot of books and authors. But wait, there seems to be a lot of difference between sources regarding the actual number of titles per list. Things are getting dizzying and perhaps well beyond the capacity of this blogger. Gees, I thought I had a simple question:

What are the chances of an author landing on the NYTimes bestsellers list? That seems to stump most web sources I viewed. Anywhere from 0.00208% (1 in 48,000) to 0.08%?

USA Today

There are actually 150 bestselling books published on USATODAY.COM on Wednesdays and the top 50 books in print on Thursdays. USA Today publishes (according to AI Overview) a few key requirements: They typically produce a weekly list that ranks top-selling books across multiple sales platforms and sales must be from retailers in the US.

Minimum prices at $.99 or higher and reported from Monday to Sunday.

Other Considerations:

Tuesday releases

Book is available through various platforms; i.e., Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo…

Strong social media presence

Stacked promos

iBooks and Nook won’t report numbers until at least 500 US sales have been made in the week.

Publisher support, and strategic marketing campaigns (i.e., BookBub ads or Featured Deals) as well as pre-order period can increase the author’s chances.)

As noted above, they look for combined sales of 5-9,000 within a single week. (Sales in the US only.) That can fluctuate based on the number of new releases each week and KDP titles are not eligible.

Lends some legitimacy to adding the title on the book covers, huh? And yes, even if you’re only on the list for a week once, you can still claim that label for life. A more attainable goal, but still sadly at estimates of 0.1%

Publishers Weekly

As with the first two lists, this trade publication gathers sales data from a range of retailers and must be able to track a high sales volume (5,000 to 10,000) across various reporting channels during the track week. However, they primarily focus on books from traditional publishers but will consider self-published authors via BookLife. (They rely heavily on data from NPD BookScan (previously Nielsen BookScan, then merged in 2023 and renamed Circana BookScan), which covers around 85% of US print book sales.) Again, sales would include online and physical stores.

Additional Considerations:

Publishers Weekly will accept requests for a book review consideration using their Galley Tracker platform. (As of March 24, 2025, PW charges $25 for every book submitted for consideration.)

They will want both a digital galley as well as two physical galleys for review.

Submission for the book to be reviewed should be provided well prior to the proposed publication date, preferably three to four months.

And they will look for both a strong media presence and marketing strategy.

No, no online guess was found for the percentage of chance to attain their bestseller list.

Amazon.com

Amazon, the dominant online retailer, creates its bestseller lists based on sales that are updated hourly. They have a weekly bestseller list they call Amazon Charts. (Of course, you’ll still see “bestseller” or “bestselling author”.) There are campaigns that can take advantage of adjustments to boost the book, albeit temporarily, for better rankings. Even the weight and price of a book can affect it’s position since Amazon favors hardcover books whereas The New York Times does better with mass market paperbacks.

Amazon tracks all types of books from print to digital and audio and the list is posted every Wednesday.

As with the first three noted above, most of the criteria remains the same with the exception that Amazon looks for thousands of book sales within a 24-hour period. You knew that though, huh. WHOA! That means, of course, that in some niche categories, the number of sales needed to reach #1 can be lower, depending on how you’ve chosen your category. I got a chuckle out of that one, as I’ve seen some new and wildly interesting category names recently. (Bangsian Fantasy, Cli-Fi, Epistolary—yeah, I think I’ve read one of those recently.)

And, always of interest, Amazon Charts also ranks books by the average number of daily Kindle readers and Audible listeners.

Not likely we’ll ever see a percentage of chance to land on their Charts lists. Still, AI Overview notes that an author’s chances of landing on their bestsellers lists at 1 in 100,000 depending on the category.

Since some lists are compiled using Bookscan (a reporting system from book retailers) and some don’t (i.e. Amazon), how can you get a true list of bestselling books? You definitely can’t gauge one you’ll like by their sales and I’m less inclined to believe a 5 star Amazon review over a 4 star Goodreads review.

Do you actually use one of those lists to track your reading requests or purchases? I don’t think I ever have, but I do lean very heavily on Goodreads; their Choice awards, recommendations, and new releases, not to mention all your own suggestions and reviews.

The draft is actuated in the mid-1960s and deferments were hard to get. Troy has re-upped for a second hitch in Vietnam because he is in love with a Vietnamese woman named Su Li. (For the life of me, I could not understand why our country went from the Korean War directly into the conflict in Southeast Asia! The French had lost that war at Diem Bien Pu!)

The political climate was supercharged with political parties split between following the French into Vietnam or allowing the country to unify under one communist government. The justification was to forestall the entire Asian continent become communist. John F. Kennedy tried to stop it as did his brother Bobby. Both were killed for their trouble. Meanwhile, the flower of American youth are being sent to this war with no opportunity to say no.

Mike’s older brother Troy is listed as a casualty of war. Mike does not want to go into the military although he has been issued a summons to have a physical examination prior to being inducted. His avoiding this summons results in his arrest and potential ten-year sentence in a maximum federal prison for draft evasion.

The author likens the activities of our military akin to the atrocities leveled by Hitler. The casualties on both sides are exaggerated with death tolls of the enemy being enhanced and the American casualties minimized. Meanwhile, the fighting soldier has nowhere to go and is fighting a determined enemy in their own country.

This novel is a long overdue diatribe regarding the Vietnam War and the way that the American people were duped and lied to. Anti-war sentiments at most major universities highlighted the angst born by the average draft-age citizens. Read this enlightening exposé of corporate America making billions on the sale of war material. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

His Review:

Joanna Duncan, a promising town reporter is missing. A twenty year old cold case because there is nothing but her old cell phone left. Kate Marshall and her brother Tristan are hired as private investigators to solve the mystery. Joanna’s mother could get nothing but condescending lip service for her daughter’s disappearance.

Mr. Bryndza spins an interesting tale which includes some exploration into the male sex scene in rural England. The main focus of the story is to actually find out the reason for the disappearance. Why would an investigative reporter have disappeared in rural England? The police had finally thrown up their hands.

The investigation exposes the ugly truth of the plight of young male exploitation by well to do citizens. One of these winds up as the focus of the investigation. The author seems to turn over each clue with a more onerous one being under the last. I found it hard to set this book down.

Starting an investigation agency in rural England has many pitfalls. Most of the cases include philandering wives or husbands and catching them in ill advised deeds.

A cold disappearance is a whole other endeavor. The tenacity required to delve into a 20 year old case is intriguing. The author handled the case with clever feints and dodges that kept me reading until the end. The ending was particularly unexpected–very clever twist. Read this book and see if you do not agree! 4.5 stars – CE Williams

My Review:

When I first told my son I was reading a book by Dean Koontz, he said, “but Koontz is a horror writer, mom.” I explained to him that I was reading his new Jane Hawk series (including The Night Window, the fifth and final in the series) and that it was more action thriller, techno thriller. Indeed, I read the whole series, and another suspense standalone, The Good Guy. To be honest, I hadn’t read a horror book by him as I don’t read horror books.

The one filament common to most of his books is that little edge of the supernatural and this one is no exception. That said, this one is a surprise for me but of course I was drawn to the dog on the cover with promise that it might include a canine in the storyline. It does.

Amy is apparently wealthy. She spends her time in the rescue of golden retrievers and she’s developed quite the rep—and certainly the mastery in rescue of the animals in some of the most dire situations. This time Amy rescues Nickie. Her boyfriend is horrified by the circumstances, but she successfully manages the retrieval of the dog. She has no idea she is part of a dark plan, but she does share some of her feelings regarding Nickie to her boyfriend, Brian. (Is it possible Nickie has been here before?)

What starts as eerie incidents escalate into a darker and darker chain of events that introduces Hope. POV’s switch to the head of Hope as she coyly manages her mother, something the ten year old Down’s syndrome daughter has learned to deal with.

The antagonist charges head long into some of the cruelest, most despicable scenes of a mother imagined. The worst kind of depraved person a human can be posed against the most innocent, decent. Good versus evil personified.

While Amy separately deals with demons, they plan their perverse scheme, and it’s revealed there is more to Hope than conceived of. Indeed, if at first your heart broke for her, it just as quickly rose in pride for her astute management of the situation.

Nickie, the golden, did indeed prove herself a stout-hearted canine, more than just a beautiful companion.

Scratching my head. This is one devil of a narrative. Stomach-churning scenes at odds with triumph. My problem is the conclusion. Both the main characters as well as support barrel into the climax in one swooping, crashing plot crunch. And then it ends just as quickly. You can turn another page if you want, but the story ended. Just like that.

I’m a Koontz fan. Not a horror story fan. Most of my positive experience with this writer is the subtle, descriptive way he delivers the prose, so beautiful you can almost (almost!) forget the horrific circumstances. It’s hypnotic. And I’m compelled to look for the next Dean Koontz book.

At first, it seems that all is normal in the household, even if the couple’s elderly granny keeps entirely to her bedroom upstairs. But Gracie begins to realize that Granny is suffering from neglect—and rather than helping her, the husband and wife have decided she isn’t dying fast enough.

His Review:

Orphans and runaways lived a very difficult life in big cities at the turn of the century. Either they are placed in strict government-run children’s homes or are left to fend for themselves on the streets. Many freeze to death or die of malnutrition. The very wealthy take them in and provide room and board and little if any compensation. They are given specific jobs and are expected always to be available.

A young lady knocks on Gracie Tallman’s door and asks for help. She is sick with a cold and cannot accomplish her work. Gracie replaces her and helps in the job while she recuperates. Without a reference from another family or maintaining her job, however, all will be lost. I found the life in the city to be extremely eye opening. How could people have such little regard for the health of young orphaned children?

Every aspect of life in the rich person’s manor is closely monitored by the wife of the landlord. How dare the people living in livery expect more than a warm bed and a paltry diet! The offspring of the very wealthy expect everyone to provide all luxuries for them without recompense or even a simple thank you. Just being allowed to live in the luxury in which they are born should command total loyalty.

The end result of Ms. Perry’s writing is a glimpse into a totally different world of excess and poverty, the entitled and their servants. Even an older person may be hidden away while the family hopes for a quick death to speed the execution of the will and acquisition of the properties. The heirs themselves then quickly become objects of disdain and hate. Currently on pre-order. 5 stars – CE Williams

It’s been some time since we’ve read an Anne Perry book. Back in 2017, I enjoyed An Echo of Murder. This time I thought the CE might enjoy the historical aspect of her writing style. He did. His Review:

Caring for a parent with dementia is never easy. Kate has had a number of people taking care of her mother who is rapidly deteriorating. Mysterious bruising and other problems indicate someone is mistreating her. Who would do such a thing to an elderly frail woman?

After her longtime care giver disappears, Kate is pleased to find Ruby. She is the perfect answer and is given a room in the house to help compensate for the many hours she spends with Kates’ mom. Signs of abuse point to Kate and letters appear under her door claiming she is a terrible person and unworthy.

Kate desperately works to keep her mother at home and under loving care and protection. Her job as a publishing editor is continually at risk because of a uncaring employer and a punk writer. She is assigned to correct the proof for the writer and finds many problems. Conflicts arise as her mother gets worse and her boss threatens to fire her.

Logan is a handsome suitor and Kate allows herself to date two years after her husband’s suicide. She is very tenuous and careful in allowing any relationships because of the loss of not only a husband but her father as well. A solicitor clouds the care issue because he is “her mothers’” solicitor and not hers. This relationship clouds the overall tension and Kate’s good intensions.

The main character is portrayed as a very tenuous personality whose relationships are always under scrutiny by her boss. He is a true self-centered narcissist who does not like women. His response to most of them is smiling wickedness. One would like to accidentally run over him in a dark alley.

I enjoyed the novel but got a little tired of Kate’s inability to stand up for herself. She also tends to procrastinate in reporting events that scare and concern her. The police are a day or two behind each event. Rather than report the abuse of her mother to the police she hesitates because she feels that they will think she is the perpetrator. Wallowing in self doubt and letting others push her around got a bit tiresome and allowed some interest to wane. 4 stars – CE Williams
