My Review:

There’s nothing like an all out race that slams at 150 mph into a wall. Sorta what this novel does as the beginning is both a shock and thrill ride.

New mom Camilla didn’t have a particularly restful night and hoping for a little help getting ready for her first day back to work discovers her hubby’s note. Harried and a little resentful, she manages both herself, the baby, and the house and gets to her own job. Before she can get settled down, however, the police are asking to speak to her.

There is an apparent hostage situation in London. She’s thinking hubby is a hostage, but no, they inform her, he is the hostage taker.

Whoa! Switcharoo! Not what the reader expects and it’s a great hook. With two POVs, hers and the hostage negotiator, things progress swiftly until the whole premise hits that proverbial wall. The hostages are killed and Luke manages his escape.

Part II, left without the rug underneath, the reader is now a hostage as well—hanging onto the storyline simply because you have to know the how, why? Cam insists he’s innocent. But in the face of everything, including damaging videos, does she really still believe it can’t be him? If it IS him, WHY?

What follows after that mad scramble into incredulity are the personal back stories and struggles with Cam and the negotiator, Niall, who with the death of the hostages now has those deaths and failure laid at his feet.

AH! Then Part III kicks in and the pace picks up again, but that middle part definitely slows and chills the narrative. In the meantime, some seven years have elapsed, it’s old news, and her life may be changing with a new romance. She decides it’s time to have Luke officially declared dead.

Now the hitch in the giddy-up. Oops. Maybe not. Truth to say, she might always love Luke. If it’s him, trying to reach her—she must know.

Yeah, those twists. It’s possible you also figured out a few things, stretched your imagination. Great characters. I found Niall particularly engaging and empathetic. Still, there’s a whole story yet to reveal denouement. A surprising departure from most plots, tension filled, suspenseful. If you enjoy thrillers, you’ll enjoy this one—even through the slower part. 4.5 stars

I read Wrong Place Wrong Time and I’m still experiencing vertigo from that one. This one pushes disbelief and also leaves you tilted. The author looks so innocent in those author photos, hard to believe these plots come from that mind.

My Review:

Having ventured into a Ruth Galloway book, I thought I’d try another first in the series. This series, however, leads the reader into a totally different experience and, actually, as a girl, I loved gothic stories.

Not so much this one.

I don’t have a problem with multiple POVs, usually enjoy them. In this case, it changed the vibe of the book for me. Stopped what might have been an interesting flow to begin another and one not so engaging.

This novel begins a slow burn for me perhaps because I always found English classes dry and lacking connection. While we aren’t exactly talking classics here, I struggled with the academia side of the narrative, found most characters haughty and arrogant, and a couple I actively disliked. The plot centers around Clare and her teenage daughter, Georgia (Yet another snotty teen?) Clare’s best friend is murdered. Enter DS Kaur, I thought a bit too intense and forceful. My favorite character is the little dog, of course.

The author R M Holland lived in the particular old school building where he wrote his best known works. He is surrounded by myth and the story of the death of his wife. He left an extract that becomes a mantra throughout the book, and as it was an audiobook, became a bit much.

“Hell is empty, all the devils are up here.”

At first the passage jolted me as it sounded much like something my grandfather once said. But then it was repeated, over and over.

The plot becomes quite complex. The atmospheric gothic quality of the campus descriptions of the area lends a strong character quality to the Victorian storyline, building tension and adding to the “creep” factor. Lots of threads pulled up in the denouement. Sometimes though the motive for a murder feels a bit weak, but okay, everything buttons up in the end.

My Review:

I’m not above reading a good witchy story or paranormal, so when my daughter recommended this one, I went looking for it. Yes, it was right in my well-stocked library—an audiobook!

Also, score, it’s Book 1. I’ve managed to find a few lately and love that I can get in with the introduction to the series (in this case, nine installments). Rosemary Thorn and her teenage daughter returns to Myrtlewood following the death of her granny for the reading of the will and return to her childhood home, Thorn Manor.

Surprise! Her memories of Thorn Manor is not what she finds. Worse, there is a question of whether or not good ole Gran died of natural causes or was helped. It’s a small town, of course, where everybody knows everybody and the extended family is not exactly fans of Rosemary.

It quickly became apparent I wouldn’t be either. Go ahead, read that blurb again. There are trigger warnings, one of which is that Rosemary is a ditz (worse, actually) and her snarky daughter needs to be given some tough love. I can’t imagine a mother allowing her daughter to speak to her like that, much less in front of other people.

Rosemary is introduced to the magical side of the Thorn family and the quirky support characters in the little town. Also, the house is magical and, indeed, haunted. But can Gran talk some sense into Rosemary? Maybe not.

Guess I’ve just gotten tired of snotty little kids in the TV sitcoms who appear to rule the roost and have the laugh track hanging on every word. So, the slow burn with these two didn’t help what might have been an interesting, well-paced storyline. Also, I’m not a fan of cliffhangers and this one is a douzy.

Okay, yes, the blurb gives you a warning, but does this novel get better in subsequent installments? Will Rosemary ship Athena off to military school in Minnesota? If you enjoy those bullet points listed in the blurb, you will no doubt enjoy the banter between mom and daughter. I did enjoy the little ghostie things that popped up, and I do love the banners and the covers—way compelling! I may be forced to read the second just because of the cover.

My Review:

It’s been a couple years since my last Alex Delaware book, The Ghost Orchid, as my last two reads by this author have included his son Jesse as co-author in the Clay Edison series. I was a little disappointed in the last Clay Edison, A Measure of Darkness, while I loved my last Alex Delaware book.

The Alex Delaware series always has three main characters: Alex, Milo, and the City of Los Angeles. Goodness, if anyone can make LA sound exciting, adventurous, and exotic, Kellerman can. His descriptions of the people and environs are atmospheric and always create a setting full of anticipation.

In this installment, they are involved in the murder and dumping of a young, aspiring actress. But of course that would only be the tip of the iceberg and soon there will be more bodies, both victim and perp.

Alex, as a main character, has been grandfathered in as a “volunteer” in the department (the series is that old), a partner to Milo, an official LA detective.

I don’t know if it was the narrator or the writing, but there has always been the sense that Alex is the intelligent one, though then the question would be how Milo made it this far. But he did seem more a ding-a-ling this time. Still, he is the one with the resources of the department while Alex provides cerebral input. Together, they are effective.

I’m still not sure where it went wrong for me this time. Yes, an audiobook; yes, I’m multi-tasking while listening; yes, there’s been another 90-degree flip in the storyline and now where am I? New characters, new case. Related? I guess so. Somehow, it became a bit of a blur for me, and there were short spaces of time I tuned out. Not good for an audiobook!

So, yeah, a little disappointed in Book 40 but looking forward to Book 41.

My Review:

Holy cow! Here I am again, swimming against the positive current of all those readers who apparently loved the book. Somehow, when I read the blurb, I expected an atmospheric adventure in the remote northwest park where archaeologist Audrey Kendrick was overseeing the proper examination of native artifacts. This became a clash with Navy SEAL Xavier Rivera with whom she’s had…ahem!…previous experience.

Xavier was apparently tapped to plan a serious training session with his men, no detail overlooked (except for the weather), and neither performed a final check that all was as planned.

Not my fav…insta love. Sex scenes. Repeating over and over their history, all the plans she’d made to give him the big news. There were multiple POVs, which didn’t bother me so much until it came back to the same discussions previously hashed over and over and the betrayal suffered.

I enjoyed descriptions of the park, the mountain, the lodge and local native inhabitants as well as the survival maneuvers and strategy. Not so much the military fatalities and definitely a little tired of the old Russian bad guy cliché.

These are not characters with whom I could engage. Tiresome to keep being told she was pregnant. YES! We know! And she did all this pregnant in her first trimester! Hoorah!

The storyline was paced at different levels, the writing interesting (I can do without the graphic sex scenes). And really, the whole thing is predictable, including the conclusion. BTW, you can kiss your Naval career goodbye, Xavier.

If you like more romance than adventure, you might well enjoy this hot little number. I’m not sure I’ll try another Grant novel.

My Review:

Unhappily, our Netflix doesn’t present the movie version of Brooklyn, and it sounds like the plot might have gotten ground a bit, skipping over the mundane. I might have preferred the movie.

I did, however, listen to the audiobook, and sorry (once again) of my inability to make those notes along the way on an audiobook. It does present a slow start, introducing Eilis Lacey and her life in small town fifties Ireland and that of her large Catholic family, an older sister and three brothers, the latter of whom all split for England and greater opportunity.

Eilis is facing that age when her reality is marriage and kids and longing for something more is asking the old familiar, “Is that all there is?”

No, not for her, as the family priest and her older working sister have arranged her sponsorship to Brooklyn, along with a room in a boarding house and a job in a department store. Her sister will take care of their mother, so off she goes.

The transition is not just from a small town to metropolis, Ireland to America, family to boarding house with a variety of cliquey boarders, singlehood to introduction to men. There is the shock of relocation, the homesickness, and the previous lack of adult decision making for herself.

The storyline is not new. We’ve been through this plot before but what sets it apart, of course, is the author’s prose, writing style, description of the era, and transition of old morals to modern. Yes, coming of age, right between the eyes.

As the narrative progresses, there are decisions to be made, back bone to be adjusted, and actions taken that with either choice will forever alter the life she had planned or expected.

Decisions, decisions…

The Italian American with the family making firm plans on advancement, all appearances looking upwardly mobile and a man who obviously adores her. Does she adore him back?

No.

Does she even love him? Did she get swept into another of those life-altering decisions without proper consideration? Yup.

Now, Ireland. She’s been called back. Her sister passed unexpectedly leaving no one to care for her mother. But…blue skies! There is the Irish man who adored her from afar—still available and now transformed with testosterone.

I thought it was no contest and I’m not a fan of the non-ending. So it was a romance. And conflict; eenie, meenie, miney, mo…

This one seemed to have the spectrum of reviews. Did you read it? How did you feel about it?

My Review:

I’ve enjoyed the author’s cozy mystery series for some time, read most of them and then started this series. Book 3 is also my third and I’ve found each a bit darker.

Although Book 2 Some of Us Are Looking, began bordering on noir this one turned even darker from thriller to horror and I found some descriptions just too graphic for me.

Dimpna Wilde is a vet in a remote rural village on Ireland’s coast. Her practice has led her to confront the death of more than animals. In this installment, the gruesome body of a pregnant woman and her baby has been found. At the same time, a young boy and a pregnant teenage girl go missing.

Dimpna is again partnered with Detective Inspector Cormac O’Brien and Detective Sergeant Barbara Neely to help find the missing children as well as determine who and why the young woman was killed and her body dumped. Is an old cult resurfacing?

We’ve come up on the partnership of Dimpna and DI O’Brien before and rooted in the background for them to possibly light the spark that undeniably appears between them.

I’m not sure what really happened to this storyline though. It felt like it made a left turn somewhere in the plot and created a rather disjointed feel to the novel. I liked the POV from the teenage girl (who is also deaf!). Support characters are not developed—left more as dark shadows in the scene. I thought I detected a couple of small contradictions which left me a bit confused and as the narrative raced to the denouement, became ever more complex and confounding. I’m not sure—did that whole confusing explanation in conclusion make sense to you?

There is not enough of E.T., her sheepdog, Pickles, her border collie, and Guinness, her English bulldog in this one. I was enjoying the series even as it turned darker, but this one had me wondering what happened to the author with the sweet cozies and who is this one?

The setting is atmospheric, Dimpna is an interesting main character, and it appears she and Cormac may get cozy. If you enjoy stories written about Ireland or mysteries set in a unique village with a smart and unusual MC with a dark storyline chalked full of twists you can’t predict, you’ll enjoy. But be aware, this one gets graphic.

His Review:

A detective can never be certain that someone he/she tracks down and arrests will not seek revenge. This is the umbrella that Tracy Crosswhite lives under every day. She had been relentless in hunting for her sister’s killer and making sure that he would spend the rest of his life in prison.

A really good defense attorney will work to free his/her clients no matter what egregious crimes they have committed. Erick Schmidt had killed her sister as well as a number of young women. The killings were cruel and messy and he made sure that they suffered the maximum amount before they expired. Meanwhile, he languished in jail as appeal after appeal was filed on his behalf. The process is exacerbated by a judge who feels that every convict is harassed by the officers who hope to get them off the streets and put away.

Tracy’s twin sister had been one of Erik’s playthings. Her body was mutilated and buried in a shallow grave. He had hoped to put Tracy in a similar grave but was caught instead. This story exemplifies the problems faced by the police and the judicial system and the horrors that result. 4.5 stars – CE Williams
