One Big Happy Family by Jamie Day – #BookReview – #DomesticThriller

 Book Blurb:

Could this reunion be the death of them?

One Big Happy Family by Jamie DayThe Precipice is a legendary, family-owned hotel on the rocky coast of Maine. With the recent passing of their father, the Bishop sisters–Iris, Vicki, and Faith–have come for the weekend to claim it. But with a hurricane looming and each of the Bishop sisters harboring dangerous secrets, there’s murder in the air– and not everyone who checks into the Precipice will be checking out.

Each sister wants what is rightfully hers, and in the mix is the Precipe’s nineteen-year-old chambermaid Charley Kelley: smart, resilient, older than her years, and in desperate straits.

The arrival of the Bishop sisters could spell disaster for Charley. Will they close the hotel? Fire her? Discover her habit of pilfering from guests? Or even worse, learn that she’s using a guest room to hide a woman on the run.

With razor-sharp wit, heart, thrills, and twists, Jamie Day’s ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY delivers a unique brand of summertime suspense.

His Review:

The Maine coast can be one of the most dynamic areas in America. Gulls float effortlessly over the water looking for a quick meal. The Precipice is a remote hotel on the coastline with unmatched views. Papa ruled with an iron thumb and each of his children were beyond spoiled and entitled. They grew up working at the hotel with various chores. Father was determined not to allow his offspring to be spoiled.

One Big Happy Family by Jamie DaySadly, Papa has passed and the family congregates at the hotel for a reading of the will. Faith is recently out of prison and Brea, Vicki and Iris are all thinking of how their lives will change when they sell the relic! The oldest sister, Vicki, has decided that she will take over and run the place and the others will receive a monthly stipend from the rents.

The family is fighting and trying to liquidate the property and Vicki will hear none of it. People start dying or disappearing. A hurricane slams into the Maine coastline and the hotel is on the track of the storm. Are the deaths accidents or is someone trying to eliminate the potential heirs?

C E WilliamsThis read made me very happy that I was not raised with this family. No love is lost between these siblings and accidents seem to be around every corner. The storm worsens and the property is boarded up to protect from blowing debris. Who will remain after the storm to take over the property? If the property is still there. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

No Strangers Here by Carlene O’Connor – #AudiobookReview – #ReadingIrelandMonth24

No Strangers Here by Carlene O'Connor

County Kerry Mystery #1

Book Blurb:

Set in Ireland’s striking, rugged countryside, USA Today bestselling author Carlene O’Connor’s dark, atmospheric new crime fiction series combines the eerie atmosphere of Tana French and Louise Penny with the compulsively taut plotting of Dervla McTiernan and Lucy Foley, as an Irish veterinarian grapples with life, death, family dynamics, and the secrets at the heart of her small community…

On a rocky beach in the southwest of Ireland, the body of Jimmy O’Reilly, sixty-nine years old and dressed in a suit and his dancing shoes, is propped on a boulder, staring sightlessly out to sea. A cryptic message is spelled out next to the body with sixty-nine polished black stones and a discarded vial of deadly veterinarian medication lies nearby. Jimmy was a wealthy racehorse owner, known far and wide as The Dancing Man. In a town like Dingle, everyone knows a little something about everyone else. But dig a bit deeper, and there’s always much more to find. And when Detective Inspector Cormac O’Brien is dispatched out of Killarney to lead the murder inquiry, he’s determined to unearth every last buried secret.

Dimpna Wilde hasn’t been home in years. As picturesque as Dingle may be for tourists in search of their roots and the perfect jumper, to her it means family drama and personal complications. In fairness, Dublin hasn’t worked out quite as she hoped either. Faced with a triple bombshell—her mother rumored to be in a relationship with Jimmy, her father’s dementia is escalating, and her brother is avoiding her calls—Dimpna moves back to clear her family of suspicion.

Despite plenty of other suspects, the guards are crawling over the Wildes. But the horse business can be a brutal one, and as Dimpna becomes more involved with her old acquaintances and haunts, the depth of lingering grudges becomes clear. Theft, extortion, jealousy and greed. As Dimpna takes over the family practice, she’s in a race with the detective inspector to uncover the dark, twisting truth, no matter how close to home it strikes…

 My Review:

Oh good grief. You can’t say I’m not consistent. An author I’ve read many times, her cozy mysteries, an apparently gave one to the CE to read in June 2022.

This one.

No Strangers Here launches a series in which the author leaves her cozy mysteries and turns out a much darker story. And you can believe that the author can spin some pretty interesting tales!

No Strangers Here by Carlene O'ConnorDetective Inspector Cormac O’Brien is back to lead the investigation into the murder of Jimmy O’Reilly in Dingle. Dr. Dimpna Wilde has returned to Dingle and the veterinarian quickly finds herself embroiled in the apparent murder owing to a possible connection to her family. Her father, also a veterinarian with a long-held practice is showing strong signs of dementia.

Wealthy racehorse owner Jimmy O’Reilly had quite the reputation for himself. He was quite the dapper dancer and the ladies loved it. Including Dimpna’s mother?

Along with a bird’s eye view of the beautiful tourist-drawing countryside and a well-rounded cadre of support characters, the narrative’s undercurrent reveals twists as the storyline progresses through each lead.

I reviewed Book 2 of the series, Some of Us Are Looking and really enjoyed it but I can’t find a Book 3 for this series. I found Book 1 to be a bit slower than the second, but as the start of a series, that’s not unusual. Dimpna has her problems, of course she does, but I found the novel about the Irish animal doctor engaging and either installment could be read as a standalone.

I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

The Big Lie by Gabriel Valjan – #BookReview – #HardboiledMysteries

A Shane Cleary Mystery

Book Blurb:

LOST: Poodle. Standard. Black. Studded collar. No tags. Goes by the name of Boo.

The Big Lie by Gabriel ValjanSun Tzu may have said, ‘Keep your friends close; keep your enemies closer,’ but he didn’t live in Boston, he’s not Shane Cleary, and Shane’s latest and most unexpected client is Southie’s most dangerous criminal.
The man who almost killed Shane wants to hire him, but Shane is more interested in Jimmy’s ‘bonus for a job done well and discretely—information about his father’s death.
His cat Delilah is against it, his girlfriend Bonnie the lawyer doesn’t know.

Everything screams he shouldn’t take the gig, but Shane can’t resist Jimmy’s ‘incentive.’
Life is neither easy nor simple for Shane. Bonnie asks for help on a pro bono case, friend Bill wants a background check, mafia henchman Tony makes a peculiar request, and Shane can’t help but think his client just might kill him anyway after he finds the dog.

Does Jimmy know a Truth that will change Shane’s life, or is it a big lie?

His Review:

A beloved pet is missing. Tony Two-Times wants him back and orders our hero to find him. There will be no reward, just a ticket to stay alive. Finding a dog does not usually require a private detective but refusing Tony invites a visit to six feet under. No is not a word in Tony’s vocabulary! He has lost his beloved dog and wants the bitch back yesterday.

The Big Lie by Gabriel ValjanOthers suspected of absconding with the furball are dispatched very unceremoniously. The job won’t pay but then again, not doing it will result in permanent burial. Many in Tony’s world have received the reward for not finding Tony’s dog but there are roadblocks in the way.

A mob leader or mafioso boss has many things in common. Denying their requests is not an option. Our hero finds that leads he feels may be fruitful were not. Meanwhile, the time is getting short and the dog cannot be found!

C E WilliamsThis story explores the underworld and the loyalties that are required to stay alive! Cleary, an ex-cop, is the subject of the mob bosses’ angst, and the dog better be found. The result is an exposé of the thinking within the mob. Very informative! 4.5 stars – CE Williams

The Lost Pope by Glenn Cooper – #BookReview – #Suspense

The Lost Pope by Glenn Cooper

Rosepoint Publishing: Five Stars 5 stars

Book Blurb:

In this action-packed thriller, a Harvard theology professor uncovers religious and papal history—and plenty of conspiracy.

Cal Donovan, a theology professor at Harvard, receives an urgent message from a former graduate student, Samia Tedros. Now a museum conservator in Cairo, Samia has discovered a miraculous fragment of papyrus with three unknown lines from the Gospel of Mary Magdalene so explosive that a wealthy man is willing to kill to ensure no one ever sees it.

At the Vatican, another drama is developing. The new Pope has defied centuries of tradition and appointed a nun, Sister Elisabetta Celestino, as his secretary of state. Powerful insiders are outraged that a woman now sits as the second most influential person at the Vatican, and they plot to destroy her.

When Samia shows up at Cal’s doorstep in the dead of night, he is drawn into a deadly competition to possess a papyrus with the power to rescue Sister Elisabetta and change the course of Christianity.

His Review:

There have been a number of gospels not accepted by the church as part of the canon of the church. The Gospel of Mary is one such example. Depending on which book you read, Mary Magdalene was either a harlot or a casual follower of Christ. Some books maintain she was a consort of his.

The Lost Pope by Glenn CooperThis book maintains that she was the wife and ardent follower of Simon Peter and ardent follower of Jesus the Christ. She was very instrumental in preaching the gospel and message of Christ. She was possibly a disciple similar to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Another early proponent of the faith was the Apostle Paul. He was struck with his faith on his way to persecute and bring to trial early Christians preaching the teachings of a Rabii who was tried and crucified on a cross.

The Nicene Council in 324 was more interested in keeping the teachings of Paul and the four primary gospels. Mary was shuffled to the side and her teachings considered heretical. However, an old funerary mask discovered contains a snippet of the Gospel according to Mary, which would point her out as being the second pope after Simon Peter. Neither the church nor any of the current hierarchy within the church will recognize her teaching as being legitimate.

C E WilliamsThe piece of her teachings found in the mask historically alters the Nicene Council’s edicts and infuriates some current day Catholics. Those interested in maintaining the status quo want to disavow the piece of papyrus by radiocarbon dating and historical analysis. Remarkably some of those historians and scholars working on the project wind up dead! This entire book is mesmerizing! I suggest reading this book and making up your own mind. 5 stars – CE Williams

The Longmire Defense by Craig Johnson – #AudiobookReview – #NativeAmericanLiterature

Walt Longmire #19

#1 Best Seller in Native American Literature

Book Blurb:

Walt Longmire faces one of his most challenging crime scenes as he tries to reckon with the revelations of his last case where he confronted the ghosts of his past and questioned the very nature of justice and mercy in the hard country of the West.

Deep in the heart of the Wyoming countryside, Sheriff of Absaroka County Walt Longmire is called to a crime scene like few others that he has seen. This crime brings up issues that go back to Walt’s grandfather’s time in Wyoming, as the revelations he learns about his grandfather come back to offer clues and motives for Walt’s investigation. Filled with back-country action, and with the great cast of characters that listeners have come to love with the Longmire series, this new book will be sure to satisfy both long-time listeners and those new to the series.

My Review:

Boy howdy, do I love getting back to that Longmire we’ve come to know and love along with all his cronies—all admittedly getting older (aren’t we all)—crustier around the edges but finally (in Longmire’s case) ready to admit he might need to slow down a bit.

The Longmire Defense by Craig JohnsonThe nineteenth installment of this successful series finds Longmire still recovering a bit from the sustained injuries received in Book 18, Hell and Back. Gees, he’s how old now? Actually, considering retirement? But first, he must take Dog and search for a woman whose GPS left her stranded and lost in the mountains with a storm coming on. He and Dog find her, but Dog also finds an interesting artifact stuck in the crags that will start a deep dive into an old, cold case. And it appears one that his grandfather might have been involved in.

Longmire is seldom on a simple case. No. This one is the same—the deeper the dive, the stickier the wicket. The reader is treated to most of the favorites, from Henry Standing Bear of the Red Pony to Vic, his deputy. In a moment of quiet reflection with Vic, he manages to make hash of what should have been a well-thought-out and tender, emotional moment. She disappears—pretty much the rest of the novel.

The reader is also treated to that wonderful narrator’s voice of George Guidall who sells the concept and the character of Longmire so well, it’d be impossible not to become engaged with both him and Absaroka County.

The investigation, as we’ve come to expect in a Longmire narrative, gets real complex real quick. There are flashbacks that fill in scenes from his grandfather’s life in the forties and the situation that appears to lead to monumental money chicanery that might involve billions. That’s B—billions of dollars—and an excellent reason to convince Longmire to knock off with the investigation already!

You know he won’t.

Love the mystery, love the well-plotted and paced storyline, the Western good ole boy but don’t take me for a fool, conversations. Yes, prose among the subtle conversations and developments with the characters (think Vic). Always another story in there and they don’t get old. This one is back on track after a couple slightly tilt, but can’t say I didn’t enjoy them as well.

Love the Longmire series! I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

To Slip the Bonds of Earth by Amanda Flower – #BookReview – #TuesdayBookBlog

Book Blurb:

While not as famous as her older siblings Wilbur and Orville, the celebrated inventors of flight, Katharine Wright is equally inventive – especially when it comes to solving crimes – in USA Today bestselling author Amanda Flower’s radiant new historical mystery series inspired by the real sister of the Wright Brothers.

To Slip the Bonds of Earth by Amanda FlowerDecember 1903: While Wilbur and Orville Wright’s flying machine is quite literally taking off in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina with its historic fifty-seven second flight, their sister Katharine is back home in Dayton, Ohio, running the bicycle shop, teaching Latin, and looking after the family. A Latin teacher and suffragette, Katharine is fiercely independent, intellectual, and the only Wright sibling to finish college. But at twenty-nine, she’s frustrated by the gender inequality in academia and is looking for a new challenge. She never suspects it will be sleuthing…

Returning home to Dayton, Wilbur and Orville accept an invitation to a friend’s party. Nervous about leaving their as-yet-unpatented flyer plans unattended, Wilbur decides to bring them to the festivities . . . where they are stolen right out from under his nose. As always, it’s Katharine’s job to problem solve—and in this case, crime-solve.

As she sets out to uncover the thief among their circle of friends, Katharine soon gets more than she bargained for: She finds her number one suspect dead with a letter opener lodged in his chest. It seems the patent is the least of her brothers’ worries. They have a far more earthbound concern—prison. Now Katharine will have to keep her feet on the ground and put all her skills to work to make sure Wilbur and Orville are free to fly another day.

My Review:

Living in the shadow of her two upcoming famous brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, isn’t easy, especially for a woman at the turn of the century. Katherine is also the youngest of the Wright children in a progressive patriarchal household. Losing her mother at the age of fifteen has catapulted her into the role of household manager and caretaker as well as manager of their bicycle shop.

Back when women were thought to be best left uneducated, she was privileged to attend and graduate from Oberlin College. Her education and smarts have created a strong-willed woman at twenty-nine who is fiercely independent. She also teaches Latin at the local school in competition with a male teacher with less expertise in the language arts.

To Slip the Bonds of Earth by Amanda FlowerWhen her brothers triumphantly return from Kitty Hawk, they do not receive quite the accolades expected. When Wilbur decides to keep his unpatented plans with his wing-warping notes with him to a party, they go missing about the same time as the assumed main culprit is found murdered. As the problem solver, it falls on her to discover the truth.

For most of the book, Katherine is a solid intelligent woman and at times I found her grating though she becomes a bit clumsy near the conclusion. She could be both impressive and sad at the same time, assumed dedicated and accepting of the Wright family and home for life.

I enjoyed the historical tidbits of early flight interwoven into the storyline along with Katherine’s investigation of both the murder and the theft, drawn to a satisfying conclusion.

An easy, entertaining read, well-plotted and paced. I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through @NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are my honest thoughts.

Pirate Trap by Matt Cost – #BookReview – #Hard-BoiledMysteries

A Clay Wolfe Port Essex Mystery Book 5

Book Blurb:

Did Black Sam bury pirate treasure in Port Essex 300 years ago?

After finding an incredibly lucrative Spanish treasure in the Keys of Florida, Black Sam Bellamy decided to leave the pirate life and return to his true love in New England. Before being shipwrecked on the way to retrieve her, he hid his booty with the Chbo So Clan in Port Essex.

Pirate Trap by Matt Cost“Well, Mr. Wolfe, to get straight to the point, we want you to help us find a lost pirate treasure.”

Clay Wolfe had been slouched in the desk chair of his P.I. office, but now he straightened up and sat forward. His normally natty attire was ruffled, stubble dotted his face, and his eyes were red. “In Port Essex?”

Clay Wolfe, devastated by the death of his grandfather, is hired by an antiques dealer to find a long-lost pirate treasure and finds himself pitted against an unscrupulous sex doll businessman, a motorcycle gang, a greedy salvage boat operator, and other mysterious entities. Also recruited for this treasure hunt is Clay’s crew: Westy, Crystal, Murphy, Cloutier, and of course, Baylee Baker.

And the spark between Clay and his partner, Baylee, finally bursts into flame…

His Review:

Pirate Trap by Matt CostLet’s face it, Clay is not welcome in this town. The Chief of Police has informed him that he is not welcome and to get out of town. He would have been thrown in jail but the Chief couldn’t come up with charges that he thought would stick! Clay is staying to clear a friend’s name. This is really being caught between a rock and a hard place!

Someone is killing what looks like random people in town. When the latest victims become a young mother with three small children, Clay vows to eliminate the killer! Being suspected of the killing really makes his job harder. Thank God he has some of his investigative staff to assist. However, working for Clay can put you into the cross-hairs as well—and do.

C E WilliamsMatt has written another complicated and engaging narrative, well-paced and guaranteed to keep the readers on the edge of their seats. Enjoy! 4 stars – CE Williams
