Lockdown (NYPD Negotiators Book 3) by Sara Driscoll – #BookReview – #TuesdayBookBlog

Book Blurb:

When a horrific school shooting turns into a hostage situation, only Gemma Capello, the NYPD’s most skilled negotiator, has a chance to save innocent lives and end the crisis . . .
Lockdown by Sara DriscollTalking a suspect into sending his hostages out alive is NYPD Detective Gemma Capello’s specialty. Alerted to a school shooting at her nephew’s Brooklyn high school, she is one of the first officers on-scene. Detective Sean Logan and the Apprehension Tactical Team arrive next and immediately enter the school to apprehend the two shooters, while Gemma remains outside to help students evacuate. But as time stretches on, and there is no word of her nephew, her fear builds that he is one of the lost.

One of the two shooters has holed up with a group of students and their teacher as hostages. Gemma steps in to negotiate for their survival. Floors away and armed with only her wits and the sound of her voice to convince him, Gemma fights for control of the situation even as tactical leadership pressures her for a more aggressive strategy. But for Gemma, it’s not about a quick solution. It’s about moving heaven and earth to bring everyone in that classroom home. And she’ll do whatever it takes to achieve that goal.

My Review:

I’m a solid fan of the FBI K-9 series and have read most of them but the NYPD Negotiators series was new to me.  Of course, I read the K-9 series because…dogs.

This is a whole nother kind of Driscoll experience. The author brings to this series her sharp-eyed focus on minute details that might fly over the heads of those not in this kind of life or death role.

Gemma Capello, however, is as solid and effective in her skill set of negotiator as Meg and Cody is of the canine disaster recovery team.

In Book 3 of this series, Gemma is on her way to her dad’s house when she gets a call regarding a school shooting at the school her nephew attends. She’s not that far and immediately becomes one of the first officers on the scene, albeit off-duty and out of uniform.

Lockdown by Sara DriscollIf you’ve ever wondered what it looks like, the chaos, the terror, the sights, sounds, and smells, then you’ll get your answers here—in graphic detail. Two shooters have mowed down fellow students (and teachers) when one realizes he has come to the end of the road. He had expected to go out “in a blaze of glory” and he did so, leaving the other shooter to hole up in a classroom with a group of hostages.

Gemma’s goal is to safely lockdown the school and take control of the tactical team whose leadership pushes for aggressive take-down. She is most keen on getting those hostages, and possibly the perp as well, out alive.

Securing an interesting and thorough psychological profile of the surviving perpetrator, Gemma manages to use her position of authority to provide personnel safety, quickly setting up triage stations, medical staff, and coordinating with law enforcement, including Detective Sean Logan who will have a crucial part in extraction.

The negotiations require large coordinating teams each doing their part and all Gemma’s training, education, and psychological experience to see a successful end to the tension and terror-filled scene.

The one point repeated more than once that I didn’t understand was the mantra, “Run, Hide, Fight.” How would an unarmed student without even a cell phone fight a perp with an automatic weapon bent on leaving no one alive?

Definitely a heart-pounding exposé of those real life situations we’ve seen repeated too often lately. What would you do?

I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through @NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are my honest thoughts.

City of Secrets by P J Tracy – #BookReview – #policeprocedurals

Book Blurb:

LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan returns in P. J. Tracy’s City of Secrets, the next book in the series praised by the New York Times Book Review: “Tracy seems to have found her literary sweet spot.”

City of Secrets by P J TracyLos Angeles Police Detective Margaret Nolan and her partner have worked a lot of different cases, ones where things aren’t always as they appear. And it’s Nolan’s job to find the truth in the darkness around her. When they’re called to the scene of what looks like a fatal car-jacking, Nolan soon realizes her victim was a founder of a company about to sell for millions, and within a day of his death, his partner’s wife is abducted. As Nolan learns more about the victim and his life, she gets pulled into a disturbing world of sex, violence, and big business; and an even darker world, where whispers of an “Angel of Death” are beginning to surface.

One of today’s finest crime writers, P. J. Tracy has created a series that is a rich and authentic portrait of LA, filled with the tragedy and optimism of her multi-layered characters and a story guaranteed to keep readers enthralled.

His Review:

Bruce Messane is filthy rich. He has the attitude to go along with the money. He is cruel and repulsive to everyone. Camille, one of his former wives, would dearly love to see him underground. The only good thing to come out of that union is his very lovely daughter Mimi. Mimi is the apple of his eye.

Mimi is beautiful, blond and every man’s eye turns when she enters the room. Mimi has only one problem, she has learned to hate all men! Her male victims gladly follow her until her true mission is revealed.

Detective Margaret Nolan fought hard to get her position in the LA SWAT Division. How could she have known over 13 years ago just how much she would grow to hate the job and the idiots assigned to her as her partners! She had hoped to be kicked upstairs into management but instead is dragging inept partners to investigate cases. Her latest partner is no better than her last thirty or so.

When Bruce Messane and his wife are found brutally murdered, Detective Nolan is assigned to bring the killer to justice. She will have to drag one of the rookies with her to teach them the ropes. Just the thought of this task makes her groan and turn even more caustic. What a lucky junior trainee/partner!

C E WilliamsThis book is well written with a few belly-laughs during the reading. With a rather slow start, the action is evenly paced and the results are predictable. I enjoyed the characters and can recommend it as a great distraction. 3.5 stars – CE Williams

Two of a Kind: The Beginning by Gail Meath #BookReview #HolidayFiction

 Jax Diamond Mysteries Book 4

Book Blurb:

It would take a pint-sized miracle to save this Christmas holiday. A prequel novella.

Two of a Kind by Gail MeathDecember, New York City, 1923
Officer Jax Diamond doesn’t always play by the rules, and he’s in the hot seat again with the captain of his precinct. So, when a brazen little puppy alerts him of a crime, Jax is ordered to stand down or get canned.

On the city streets, broke and alone, Jax beats himself up for not following his own instincts and saving a boy’s life. Even the little tramp who keeps trailing him everywhere can’t lift his spirits. But crime never stops in New York City and a string of deadly Christmas capers spirals out of control.

The city’s only hope is Jax and his new pint-sized partner who team up to save the Christmas holidays during the Roaring Twenties.

My Review:

I love it when a historical novel captures not only the atmosphere but the vernacular of the period—in this case, the Roaring Twenties. Even though it is Book 4 of the series, this novella is issued as a prequel to establish the introduction of the puppy Ace as the canine partner of Jax. See that cover? Can you not just love that face?

So, yes, I was drawn in, always looking for a good book with a dog involved and a PI in New York nearing Christmas checks the boxes. It doesn’t take long to be there in the midst of the action, which begins almost immediately.

Two of a Kind by Gail MeathThe German Shepherd will have your heart thinking a 120 lb dog might just be the right companion for you—well—I thought the same of the series in which a Belgian Malinois is featured until I read a profile of the latter (lighter weight, faster, more agile). (But no, thinking I’ll stick to the under 15 lb breeds.) Jax is clever, caring, relatable, and multi-talented. Jax and Ace make an effective, engaging team.

There are skillful twists and turns and the Christmas season permeates throughout with the well-plotted narrative focusing on seasonal criminal activities. Fast and easy to read.

I previously read Book 1 of the series, Songbird, and was taken with the period and the characters. Definitely an engaging series and nice that each can be read as a standalone. I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through @NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are my honest thoughts.

The Missing Piece: A Novel (Dismas Hardy Book 19) by John Lescroart #BookReview

Editors' Pick Best Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

Book Blurb:

The beloved New York Times bestselling Dismas Hardy series returns with a “perfect piece of entertainment from a master storyteller” (Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author) about a relentlessly twisty murder mystery.

The Missing Piece by John LescroartNo one mourned when San Francisco DA Wes Farrell put Paul Riley in prison eleven years ago for the rape and murder of his girlfriend. And no one is particularly happy to see him again when he’s released after The Exoneration Initiative uncovered evidence that pinned the crime on someone else. In fact, Riley soon turns up murdered, surrounded by the loot from his latest scam. But if Riley was innocent all along, who wanted him dead?

To the cops, it’s straightforward: the still-grieving father of Riley’s dead girlfriend killed him. Farrell, now out of politics and practicing law with master attorney Dismas Hardy, agrees to represent the defendant, Doug Rush—and is left in the dust when Rush suddenly vanishes. At a loss, Farrell and Hardy ask PI Abe Glitsky to track down the potentially lethal defendant.

The search takes Glitsky through an investigative hall of mirrors populated by wounded parents, crooked cops, cheating spouses, and single-minded vigilantes. As Glitsky embraces and then discards one enticing theory after another, the truth seems to recede ever further. So far that he begins to question his own moral compass in this “hypnotic and powerful” (Gayle Lynds, New York Times bestselling author) thriller that’ll keep you guessing until the very end.

His Review:

People die quickly in this tome. There is a pair of detectives that are on the case and their boss is irritated that they could not immediately solve it. He feels that his detectives spend entirely too much time in the office or wandering around town trying to put the pieces together. He wants a quick indictment and threatens their livelihood unless he sees immediate results.

The Missing Piece by John LescroartThe investigative pair of Waverly and Yamashiro have been together for many years and are the investigative spear point for the department. They ask questions at the last place the victim was seen alive, the local watering hole.

The solution seems very circular to me with the potential perpetrator coming back into the detective’s focus repeatedly. The actual criminal does not appear until very late in the novel. I felt I was receiving false leads over and over again. The reveal when it finally arrived was quick and succinct near the last chapter. The dialog at times had some funny twists and I found myself laughing out loud at a few of the antics.

C E WilliamsThis book will entertain readers when they toss logic to the wind and go with the flow.  Enjoy! 3.5 stars – CE Williams

Dying of the Light by Joe Regenbogen #BookReview #metaphysicalfiction

Book Blurb:

Shortly after Ethan Marshall attends the lake-side funeral ceremony for his wife of forty years, he climbs into the car inside his enclosed garage in the suburbs of St. Louis, starts the engine, and waits to die. The toxic fumes were only minutes away from suffocating him when chance circumstance fortuitously saved his life.

Dying of the Light by Joe RegenbogenUntil Sarah’s death, Ethan had lived an idyllic life as a successful criminal defense attorney, a husband, and the father of two children. He had always believed, however, that Sarah was the keystone to his existence, and now that his grown children have fled the nest, he feels his best years are behind him, and he can no longer find a reason to get up in the morning.

Ethan’s path to redemption begins during a visit with his son, Noah, who is wrestling with his own dilemma. While camping with Noah along the Oregon coast, Ethan receives a call from Daryl, a person from his distant past who still haunts his conscience and is now homeless and in dire need of an experienced defense lawyer.

After returning to St. Louis, Ethan assembles a team that includes Noah, Tom, an old law school friend aimlessly living in a small Kansas town, and Owen, a former teacher who may have a vital contribution to offer. Together, this team will not only conduct a valiant effort in a trial to defend Daryl against outrageous charges but will each find a reason to rage against the dying of the light.

My Review:

This book captured my interest quickly with the opening scene that captures the profound loss felt by Ethan Marshall following the funeral for his wife. He is a criminal defense attorney and the father of two children but cannot envision a life with Sarah no longer in it.

Dying of the Light by Joe RegenbogenIt is by pure chance that he is saved by his daughter who promises not to tell her brother. Both are successful and lead busy lives. When Ethan camps with his son, he receives a call from his past who gets his attention and is now seeking help. Ethan can’t deny it—he feels, as he has for a long time—that he owes him.

With Ethan’s long experience, he can assemble a team that will work effectively to defend Daryl from serious charges.  There are twists and turns and a solid investigation. The characters are well developed and easy to lend a sympathetic investment. The writing style is unique and I found many quotables:

“…a concept called the ‘over soul’ from Transcendentalism…the idea that all human souls are part of a larger soul.”

“However, despite the adage that ‘justice delayed is justice denied,’ I’ve always believed that ‘justice rushed is justice crushed.’”

I enjoyed the court scenes and the crash course in the truth of the homeless. A real lesson learned and there are religious overtones. On the whole, a remarkable narrative and satisfying conclusion.

I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through @NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are my honest thoughts.

Two Audiobooks and an eBook

Mini-Reviews – Catching Up on the TBR*

I’ve solved my TBR problem by getting the audiobooks.  And, no, I can’t always find a new book in an audiobook format, but you’d be amazed at what your library stocks.  So, it appears I’m now listening to approximately two audiobooks to one read. It would seem I’m more active than I thought and audiobooks are ideal for getting the activities accomplished while listening to a great book—especially if it’s read by a dynamic narrator. I have a few favorites. These are a few of the latest.

Finlay Donovan Rolls the Drive by Elle CosimanoMy Thoughts

Oh good grief! This one gets crazy quickly. Probably the most outrageous of the series (this is #4) and not only stretches disbelief but invents it. Quirky, nutsy fun, just go with it. Dialogue can get juicy. There is some romance for those who must have some kissy scenes. Vero takes center stage in this one and with her questionable background I’m hoping she’ll go back there (the background). Otherwise, fast read, entertaining. 3 stars

Down to the Wire by David RosenseltMy Thoughts

No, it’s not an Andy Carpenter installment, my favorite paired with fav narrator Grover Gardner. This was written eight years after the start of his Carpenter series, definitely a testament to his talent in delivering a serious, thoughtful narrative with a moral punch. The protagonist, a reporter, dreams of equaling his famous father and perhaps pulling a Pulitzer. When an event happens that might get him there, however, events turn ugly, becomes sick and twisted enough to see the price may be too high. 4 stars

Summary

Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice just went too far. I was totally on board with installments one and two. Number three went further afield and this one off the tracks. Silly entertainment. A fan of this series might tolerate this book and hope that episode five will get back on the rails.

♥Down to the Wire demonstrates the breadth the author can write with this introspective and thoughtful twist on the old “be careful what you wish for.” I had to go back and look to confirm the author was the same David Rosenfelt who writes the wise-cracking but brilliant semi-retired dog-loving attorney. This one keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Dark Drive is the Amazon Editors’ pick for Best Mystery, Thriller & Suspense. The CE and I’ve read others by this author, the last being Night Owl, a techno-thriller. Always intelligent, bright, and informative, I tend more toward the underwater storylines. Definitely for the reader who enjoys action adventure.

I received a copy of these audiobooks from my local library or the author and publisher through NetGalley that in no way influenced my reviews. These are my honest thoughts.

The Boys Are Back in Town: A Brody James Mystery by Karl Kling – #BookReview

Book Blurb:

“He smoked that pretty good,” Bullock said as he looked down the ravine at where the car landed. “Autopsy said he didn’t have a heart attack or anything, so the impact must have killed him. Hell of a way to go.”

“Every way is a hell of a way to go,” I said as I knelt closer to the road looking in both directions.

The Boys Are Back in Town by Karl KlingMy name is Brody James. After 15 years I’ve returned to the hometown I swore I’d never return to.

This is my first case since coming back, and one thing I’m sure of is that Gary Hutchins didn’t kill himself.

My partner Bullock isn’t so sure. He’s young, he’s passionate, can be annoying as hell sometimes, but he’s a good cop. I like him.

With Gary’s death one month after Rebekah Wertheimer overdosed, I know there’s a connection.

Bullock thinks I might be too personally involved in the case since I went to school with both victims. To be honest, I didn’t really like either of them or their friend Joseph Agam.

I’m willing to bet he’s in danger too. Bullock is willing to bet that I’m trying to solve these cases to impress Chloe Brown, who smells of lilacs and roast beef.

I have to remember that Bullock is young, he’s passionate, can be annoying as hell, and sometimes, I just want to punch him in the face.

His Review:

The Boys Are Back in Tolwn by Karl KlingBrody James is a recent addition in the police force. Bullock is his senior partner and not the least bit shy in managing. Brody has to get used to a pushy partner after nearly a dozen years in the navy. Three people have died in their town of Stonington and they are tasked with finding the reason. The fact that one seemed like a suicide and the other a car wreck did not detour this intrepid duo.

This tome has brilliant writing at times and I enjoyed the tale. Trying to fit a square peg into a round hole seemed to be the officer’s tactic. Decide who did the crime and then prove it. Occasionally forensics would help but the crime did not always fit their theory with confounding evidence.

C E WilliamsI enjoyed the book but found it aggravating to have to untangle some of the words grouped together in one or two lines of text—a formatting problem. The final conclusion was well thought through and overall all the book was entertaining. Otherwise, an additional editor or two would greatly smooth the narrative as well as increased attention to the formatting problems. 4 stars – CE Williams

I Have Your Back by Tom Sileo – #BookReview – #AfghanWarHistory

How an American Soldier Became an International Hero

Book Blurb:

The story of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis, who became an international hero for his courage and selflessness.

I Have Your Back by Tom SileoEver since he was a young boy growing up on the streets of Staten Island, New York, Michael Ollis wanted to be a soldier. Inspired by his father, who fought in Vietnam, Mike’s deep desire to serve was cemented on the day his beloved city was attacked. From 9/11 onward, Mike’s one and only mission was to save lives.

After two tense combat deployments, Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis earned the US Army’s coveted Ranger tab and set his sights on the perilous mountains of eastern Afghanistan. On August 28, 2013, Mike was suddenly caught in the middle of a massive and unprecedented Taliban assault on a coalition military base. Rather than retreat to his bunker, Mike decided to fight. He then encountered a Polish army officer who needed his help.

Despite being surrounded by enemy fighters while running low on ammunition, Mike promised the foreign soldier that no matter what, he would have his back. For his final act of bravery, Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis would not only receive the Distinguished Service Cross from his own country, but the highest honor that Poland can bestow upon an allied soldier.

As an American warrior, Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis had all of our backs. This vivid and visceral account of Mike’s selfless 24-year journey will motivate us to “live like Mike” by always putting family, friends and country first.

His Review:

US Army Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis loved to play soldier as a boy. He loved his dad and wanted to emulate his successful career in the army. He rose through the ranks and became a very successful squad leader in Afghanistan. His primary focus was the mission and bringing all of his squad back safely.

I Have Your Back by Tom SileoThe Afghanistan war was a direct result of the Taliban attacking our country on 9/11. The soldiers were assisting the Afghanistan army in learning how to protect their people and maintain their fledgling democracy. The Taliban hates us for this action and would dearly love to destroy our democracy and way of life.

Staff Sergeant Ollis was always drilling and reviewing tactics to keep his men prepared and safe. On the day he was critically wounded he got his men into a secure compound and left them to help secure the perimeter after a car bomb attack breached the perimeter. The action saved the life of a Polish soldier; Second Lieutenant Karol Cierpica.

C E WilliamsThe accomplishments of this Staten Island, New York native are stellar. Our country has been blessed with soldiers who gave their all that their fellow soldiers may live. Hopefully, Congress will review his file and upgrade his medal to the Congressional Medal of Honor. He deserves to be in the company of fellow heroes including Sergeant Audie Murphy. 4.5 stars – CE Williams
