My Review:

I love it when a historical novel captures not only the atmosphere but the vernacular of the period—in this case, the Roaring Twenties. Even though it is Book 4 of the series, this novella is issued as a prequel to establish the introduction of the puppy Ace as the canine partner of Jax. See that cover? Can you not just love that face?

So, yes, I was drawn in, always looking for a good book with a dog involved and a PI in New York nearing Christmas checks the boxes. It doesn’t take long to be there in the midst of the action, which begins almost immediately.

The German Shepherd will have your heart thinking a 120 lb dog might just be the right companion for you—well—I thought the same of the series in which a Belgian Malinois is featured until I read a profile of the latter (lighter weight, faster, more agile). (But no, thinking I’ll stick to the under 15 lb breeds.) Jax is clever, caring, relatable, and multi-talented. Jax and Ace make an effective, engaging team.

There are skillful twists and turns and the Christmas season permeates throughout with the well-plotted narrative focusing on seasonal criminal activities. Fast and easy to read.

I previously read Book 1 of the series, Songbird, and was taken with the period and the characters. Definitely an engaging series and nice that each can be read as a standalone. His Review:

People die quickly in this tome. There is a pair of detectives that are on the case and their boss is irritated that they could not immediately solve it. He feels that his detectives spend entirely too much time in the office or wandering around town trying to put the pieces together. He wants a quick indictment and threatens their livelihood unless he sees immediate results.

The investigative pair of Waverly and Yamashiro have been together for many years and are the investigative spear point for the department. They ask questions at the last place the victim was seen alive, the local watering hole.

The solution seems very circular to me with the potential perpetrator coming back into the detective’s focus repeatedly. The actual criminal does not appear until very late in the novel. I felt I was receiving false leads over and over again. The reveal when it finally arrived was quick and succinct near the last chapter. The dialog at times had some funny twists and I found myself laughing out loud at a few of the antics.

This book will entertain readers when they toss logic to the wind and go with the flow. Enjoy! 3.5 stars – CE Williams

My Review:

This book captured my interest quickly with the opening scene that captures the profound loss felt by Ethan Marshall following the funeral for his wife. He is a criminal defense attorney and the father of two children but cannot envision a life with Sarah no longer in it.

It is by pure chance that he is saved by his daughter who promises not to tell her brother. Both are successful and lead busy lives. When Ethan camps with his son, he receives a call from his past who gets his attention and is now seeking help. Ethan can’t deny it—he feels, as he has for a long time—that he owes him.

With Ethan’s long experience, he can assemble a team that will work effectively to defend Daryl from serious charges. There are twists and turns and a solid investigation. The characters are well developed and easy to lend a sympathetic investment. The writing style is unique and I found many quotables:

“…a concept called the ‘over soul’ from Transcendentalism…the idea that all human souls are part of a larger soul.”

“However, despite the adage that ‘justice delayed is justice denied,’ I’ve always believed that ‘justice rushed is justice crushed.’”

I enjoyed the court scenes and the crash course in the truth of the homeless. A real lesson learned and there are religious overtones. On the whole, a remarkable narrative and satisfying conclusion.

Mini-Reviews – Catching Up on the TBR*

I’ve solved my TBR problem by getting the audiobooks. And, no, I can’t always find a new book in an audiobook format, but you’d be amazed at what your library stocks. So, it appears I’m now listening to approximately two audiobooks to one read. It would seem I’m more active than I thought and audiobooks are ideal for getting the activities accomplished while listening to a great book—especially if it’s read by a dynamic narrator. I have a few favorites. These are a few of the latest.

My Thoughts

Oh good grief! This one gets crazy quickly. Probably the most outrageous of the series (this is #4) and not only stretches disbelief but invents it. Quirky, nutsy fun, just go with it. Dialogue can get juicy. There is some romance for those who must have some kissy scenes. Vero takes center stage in this one and with her questionable background I’m hoping she’ll go back there (the background). Otherwise, fast read, entertaining. 3 stars

My Thoughts

No, it’s not an Andy Carpenter installment, my favorite paired with fav narrator Grover Gardner. This was written eight years after the start of his Carpenter series, definitely a testament to his talent in delivering a serious, thoughtful narrative with a moral punch. The protagonist, a reporter, dreams of equaling his famous father and perhaps pulling a Pulitzer. When an event happens that might get him there, however, events turn ugly, becomes sick and twisted enough to see the price may be too high. 4 stars

Book Five and of course it being an Underwater Investigation, I grabbed it. Usually this unit is all about evidence retrieval but in this case a seasoned diver has gone missing. Then boy does it get complicated! Well developed characters, atmospheric (are you kidding?!) and recommended. 4.5 stars

Summary

Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice just went too far. I was totally on board with installments one and two. Number three went further afield and this one off the tracks. Silly entertainment. A fan of this series might tolerate this book and hope that episode five will get back on the rails.

♥Down to the Wire demonstrates the breadth the author can write with this introspective and thoughtful twist on the old “be careful what you wish for.” I had to go back and look to confirm the author was the same David Rosenfelt who writes the wise-cracking but brilliant semi-retired dog-loving attorney. This one keeps you on the edge of your seat.

♦Dark Drive is the Amazon Editors’ pick for Best Mystery, Thriller & Suspense. The CE and I’ve read others by this author, the last being Night Owl, a techno-thriller. Always intelligent, bright, and informative, I tend more toward the underwater storylines. Definitely for the reader who enjoys action adventure.

The Boys Are Back in Town: A Brody James Mystery by Karl Kling – #BookReview

My partner Bullock isn’t so sure. He’s young, he’s passionate, can be annoying as hell sometimes, but he’s a good cop. I like him.

With Gary’s death one month after Rebekah Wertheimer overdosed, I know there’s a connection.

Bullock thinks I might be too personally involved in the case since I went to school with both victims. To be honest, I didn’t really like either of them or their friend Joseph Agam.

I’m willing to bet he’s in danger too. Bullock is willing to bet that I’m trying to solve these cases to impress Chloe Brown, who smells of lilacs and roast beef.

I have to remember that Bullock is young, he’s passionate, can be annoying as hell, and sometimes, I just want to punch him in the face.

His Review:

Brody James is a recent addition in the police force. Bullock is his senior partner and not the least bit shy in managing. Brody has to get used to a pushy partner after nearly a dozen years in the navy. Three people have died in their town of Stonington and they are tasked with finding the reason. The fact that one seemed like a suicide and the other a car wreck did not detour this intrepid duo.

This tome has brilliant writing at times and I enjoyed the tale. Trying to fit a square peg into a round hole seemed to be the officer’s tactic. Decide who did the crime and then prove it. Occasionally forensics would help but the crime did not always fit their theory with confounding evidence.

I enjoyed the book but found it aggravating to have to untangle some of the words grouped together in one or two lines of text—a formatting problem. The final conclusion was well thought through and overall all the book was entertaining. Otherwise, an additional editor or two would greatly smooth the narrative as well as increased attention to the formatting problems. 4 stars – CE Williams

The Author: The Boys Are Back in Town is the first book written by Karl Kling, who has had a varied career.

His Review:

US Army Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis loved to play soldier as a boy. He loved his dad and wanted to emulate his successful career in the army. He rose through the ranks and became a very successful squad leader in Afghanistan. His primary focus was the mission and bringing all of his squad back safely.

The Afghanistan war was a direct result of the Taliban attacking our country on 9/11. The soldiers were assisting the Afghanistan army in learning how to protect their people and maintain their fledgling democracy. The Taliban hates us for this action and would dearly love to destroy our democracy and way of life.

Staff Sergeant Ollis was always drilling and reviewing tactics to keep his men prepared and safe. On the day he was critically wounded he got his men into a secure compound and left them to help secure the perimeter after a car bomb attack breached the perimeter. The action saved the life of a Polish soldier; Second Lieutenant Karol Cierpica.

The accomplishments of this Staten Island, New York native are stellar. Our country has been blessed with soldiers who gave their all that their fellow soldiers may live. Hopefully, Congress will review his file and upgrade his medal to the Congressional Medal of Honor. He deserves to be in the company of fellow heroes including Sergeant Audie Murphy. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

My Review:

Lest you assume this might be the ole people stuck in a blizzard and start disappearing you could be right.

With a couple caveats: Jodi Luna was raised in New Mexico and has returned to try and chill both she and her daughter following the death of her husband on the East Coast where she was a professor. Her fifteen year old daughter Mila, whether or not having witnessed the death of her dad, certainly sounds like a typical teenager to me and a pretty smart one at that. So it is her daughter who saves the day.

Hoping to turn their lives around, Jodi has gotten a job as the local game warden. She loves animals and knows how to handle most people and the situations involving them.

Her new supervisor assigns her a job requested by the governor as a favor and is clearly no request. She is to proceed to a ranch compound owned by a billionaire who is hosting his annual elk hunt on his palatial estate. Teddy Evans and his wife invited his brothers and a sister, and their spouses then splits leaving the guiding up to Jodi.

Of course, the siblings feel ridiculously entitled, are obnoxious, and the men less than thrilled over having a female guide. The wife just wants Jodi to help organize and keep them from killing each other.

Oops.

The property is massive, beautiful, and there’s a treacherous storm brewing that threatens to cancel the hunt (for animals anyway). They are high up in the mountains and isolated. Jodi brought her daughter along who transitions from Godzilla to brilliant loving daughter (I had a little disbelief there).

There is a little property that straddles the ingress/egress road to the ranch compound owned by a woman been there longer than dirt and has a pet bear. She can effectively stop traffic going through but there are far more reaching reasons why the billionaire wants her property.

Jodi seems pretty intelligent but makes a few decisions that I wondered whether might have been irrational. They discovered a body that appears to have been mauled and she is taking no chances and isolates everyone. Jodi is dealing with other issues as well and her job is in jeopardy.

So many conflicts, themes of family dysfunction, entitlement, greed, and trust are interwoven into a plausible plot. The storyline keeps a good pace, pushes some disbelief, throws in twists and adds complexity. It’s entertaining. The female protagonist reminded me a little of Nevada Barr’s Anna Pigeon series, although I think Pigeon is softer around the edges than Jodi who could become grating.

I enjoyed the book, it kept my interest. Thinking I’ll go back to Book #1 and catch up, although this could very well be read as a standalone.

When Theodosia Benton abandons her career path as an attorney and shows up on her brother’s doorstep with two suitcases and an unfinished novel, she expects to face a few challenges. Will her brother support her ambition or send her back to finish her degree? What will her parents say when they learn of her decision? Does she even have what it takes to be a successful writer?

What Theo never expects is to be drawn into a hidden literary world in which identity is something that can be lost and remade for the sake of an audience. When her mentor, a highly successful author, is brutally murdered, Theo wants the killer to be found and justice to be served. Then the police begin looking at her brother, Gus, as their prime suspect, and Theo does the unthinkable in order to protect him. But the writer has left a trail, a thread out of the labyrinth in the form of a story. Gus finds that thread and follows it, and in his attempt to save his sister he inadvertently threatens the foundations of the labyrinth itself. To protect the carefully constructed narrative, Theo Benton, and everyone looking for her, will have to die.

My Review:

Well, phooey. Yes, I’ve read this author before, with mixed results, but thought I’d try this one. There were reviews that mentioned The Woman in the Library—read it—but preferred Where There’s a Will.

For some reason, this one started out slow for me. Theo Benton gives up on college in Australia to move to Lawrence Kansas where her attorney brother Gus lives. Surprise, surprise, he wasn’t expecting her but appears to accept her with open arms and support her new desire to be a writer. To that end, he recommends she find an internet case where other writers may congregate.

That works, as eventually she meets Dan Murdoch, who turns out to be a bestselling author and he seems willing to mentor her. Yeah. Uh huh. I thought I could see where this was going—he had hit a wall(?) and her book premise sounded good. But then, he turns up murdered.

Whoa. I did not see that coming.

In the meantime, we’ve gotten to know Gus and his friend Mac. Mac’s family is off the rails, the plot veers the same direction, and Gus will lose his legal position, his rep, his income; good grief—talk about collateral damage.

I had problems with Theo from the beginning. She seemed a privileged princess and thank heaven for a brother who was willing to sacrifice. The boys circle the wagons when the police like Gus for the crime. Theo is trying to figure out what and why Murdoch was killed and there are jumps in the timeline that lost me as to purpose. The storyline takes another totally unexpected twist. The one character I really enjoyed was Horse—and his scenes provided humorous moments.

Somehow the story becomes so complex with conspiracy theories and doomsday preppers it just lost me in connection and believability. A weird one off.

Noted it was a final manuscript, it had numerous typos and missing words. These were intended to be corrected prior to release.
