My Review:

I caught the title from a buddy bookblogger and had to check it out! Literally—from my local library. That pink cover might be off-putting, but it has a dog on it. How bad can it be?

Oh my goodness. Where does this Yankee start? Is there much difference between aging in the UK or the US if both are well seasoned and busy trying to find what mischief to get into next? I think not.

It’s Daphne’s 70^th birthday, the youngster, and she’s thinking of maybe getting back out into society after lying low for some time. She’s looking at the 70s and feeling a bit lonely. It’s that colorful background, you see.

So she finds a senior social club at the local community center and quietly sets out to get some online dating experience at the same time. I spent some time at the beginning of the book wondering where this thing was going and if it would be worth it. But the writing style? Got me. I kept reading.

I enjoyed the dialogue, the sense of humor, the intelligence, and the life going on with these supposed aging citizens. Okay, maybe retired doesn’t mean dead from either the waist up or down.

Then, a plot begins to manifest, as well as glimpses of Daphne’s life experience and the support characters are beginning to develop into real people. The descriptions paint a picture of seniors as they might see themselves, absent facial lines and thinning hair: vibrant, driven, determined to save their community center.

AH! So at this point, you’re thinking BOORING!…not so! This is written with such heart, emotions. It is pure entertainment.

Is it a mystery? Yes. (well, sorta)

Sassy, snarky? Yes.

Is there a bit of romance? (Don’t groan!) Yes.

Is a dog involved? Yes

It’s sweet and it’s fun. And it hits many topical themes, aging of course, but loneliness, abuse, and teen pregnancy. The characters are memorable and I loved that little zinger at the end.

The narrator does a terrific job of mastering those voices. Many thanks to my local library for providing me with the opportunity to listen to and review this audiobook. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

My Review:

Note to Self: Read title heading and blurb carefully

Yeah, I was taken by the cover and to a lesser extent the blurb.

Air Marshal Kristine Duncan and some cronies are off on a much-needed vacation when the plane is hijacked. The hijacker, however, isn’t terribly sophisticated or knowledgeable in the art and, indeed, appears he’d rather not do it anyway. Not too difficult to take him down and Kristine does just that.

Also on the plane and involved in the arrest is FBI Special Agent Andrew Ross. Pretty handy, huh? Their investigation also gets hijacked, as the perp appears to have no clear mission and rather than being a diabolical perp bent on mayhem, it appears they attain more sympathy for the man. His situation is critical.

The more they investigate, the more they discover additional feelings for each other. Uh Oh. The narrative is laid out rather simplistically and the characters are not wholly developed despite long dialogues regarding their backgrounds and religious beliefs. She has daddy issues. He seems too good to be true. I kept waiting for that other shoe to drop.

There is a hook at the beginning, but then the plotline begins to slow and the pace with it, sagging in the middle, even with a few twists. The romance is a slow burn, which is okay with me as I don’t generally do romance.

I’m not quite sure where it went off the rails for me, but disbelief gained significant traction and the denouement was a shock. While I thought that’s where it was heading, still a bit disappointed when it did.

My Review:

Well, phooey. Not what I expected. But it says right up top that it’s a love story. Obviously, not one of my favorite genres.

I really enjoyed Daisy Jones and The Six, and somehow expected that same level of realism in the space industry turned fiction for the consumption of the masses.

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid — Atmosphere – US cover

Joan Goodwin has always been fascinated with the stars and space, and though she is a successful professor at Rice University is immediately consumed with the desire to become an astronaut when she reads an advertisement looking for women scientists to join NASA’s space shuttle program.

Despite all the odds, she and a select few other women complete the training and are now vying for the upcoming scheduled missions with the few men also selected. These are the elite of the elite: scientists, engineers, and military combat pilots.

The storyline, which is told in a split timeline, details Joan’s story, her family, and her academic achievements. She is singularly devoted to her little niece, Frances, with whom she’s at times at odds with her sister, Barbara. Lots of support characters, mostly lightly developed, who run the gamut from the light-hearted to the back-stabbing Lydia.

I enjoyed some of the discussions regarding the stars, their positions, and history. Somewhere in the middle, however, the storyline veered away from the original mission and strongly into the love story. Once started as an ode to the stars, now drowning in emotional philosophical discussions.

I felt like I was promised an explosive, cutting-edge women in space piece with a double-edged sword. Also, the ending was too predictable. Too much personal development; too little in the aerospace industry. (I think it’s a 3-star effort, but I’m adding a half-star for the subplot with her sister. A well-written antagonist—kept me listening.)

Best Mystery, Thriller and Suspense

My Review:

Krueger has found his chops and he’s using them again—or perhaps this is the one that started it, given Ordinary Grace was published in 2013. This Tender Land (set during the Depression) was published in 2019, The River We Remember in 2023 (Iron Lake in 2010. The latter is the only one whose main character is not a child and the start of a series.)

The characters are richly developed, become real, and easy to care about them all. The settings describe 50s or 60s landscapes, people, and morality. Frank, at thirteen, is growing up in an average household in an average small town, Minnesota. It’s so easy to visualize the area and feel the upper Midwest weather, almost like a cloak.

While his mother does not have a career, she is an accomplished musical director, musician. Frank has a younger brother, Jake, who has an unfortunate stutter and an older sister.

When eighteen-year-old Ariel is murdered, it spells the end of innocence as the boys knew it, and pretty much destroys their mother. Only their father, a local minister who lives the faith he preaches, manages to hold on and struggles with keeping his family together. The impact the death has on the little town is enormous and most have an unsubstantiated idea of who was responsible.

Once again, in Kreuger’s story, there is a sympathetic Native American that is the accused, although he manages to disappear before they can apprehend him. Also, as in This Tender Land, the narrator is a pre-teen or early teen on the cusp of losing his innocence in people and the world.

Themes of discrimination, intolerance, heart-crushing circumstances. The plots between his books are eerily similar, multi-layered, and complex. The author also examines love and faith, the latter of which plays a heavy part in the storytelling.

The twist at the end caught me by surprise—never really a person of interest—nor one I gave thought to. It’s tragic and forever.

Still, how would I rate this one, compared to the three others I’ve read by the same author? This one holds the interest, it’s engaging, and you must know who and why.

I can recommend this one. But I prefer This Tender Land.

My Review:

My first experience with this author and I’m sure an excellent entry into her beautifully crafted writing style.

Sophie Whalen is a young Irish emigrant who answered an ad in a desperate attempt to escape her squalid circumstances into which she’d fallen since arriving in New York. The tiny tenement lacking running water or bathroom facilities is shared with several other women.

The ad seeks a pseudo-mother for his five-year-old so he can appear to be a happily married sales member of his insurance company. She is successful in her bid and finds herself traveling from New York to San Francisco to live with Martin and Kat. The five-year-old is reticent and silent at first, Martin Hocking remains aloof after a quick court wedding the day she arrives, but the house is beautiful and she is made comfortable.

It’s not long before she bonds with Kat, who is precocious and adorable. Sophie hoped that she’d learn to love Martin, but he has not changed in his remote stance toward her and she realizes that it won’t happen.

Then she has a surprise visitor. It doesn’t take long in the conversation before Sophie realizes she’s been in a sham of a marriage and that her good-looking husband is no one she ever knew. Belinda is pregnant. Martin isn’t just cold and remote; he’s evil and apparently dangerous, and together they plot their escape.

Before either can take any measures, however, the big 1906 earthquake happens, throwing them into a world of death, destruction, fires, and desperate attempts to escape the city for a return to Belinda’s quarters in a nearby city.

Along the way, they discover another woman with deep ties to Martin and Kat.

The author is quite the storyteller and weaves an intricate tale of friendship, deception, mystery, and suspense. There is a space in about one half(?) of the book that sagged just a bit for me, became a bit repetitive, and lost the previous pace. Still, it managed a wild denouement at the end and made for a satisfying climax.

My Review:

I confess. I downloaded this book because one of my favorite narrators worked the audiobook, Saskia Maarleveld. And yes, come time, I recognized her voice. Unfortunately, there were a lot of other voices as well, and the constant switching back and forth had my head spinning.

So, honestly? I found this book to be a bit of a slog. I can’t say bored. Well, maybe I can. Between all the characters, most unlikable, I had a difficult time engaging in any of them, although the new mother, Dani, had my sympathy once or twice.

This is supposed to be a thriller, then not just character and voice switch, but time switches (before, during, after) slow the pace and was difficult to navigate. We are talking Dani, a new mom and step-mom to birthday girl, Sophie, turning sixteen and her dad, Ethan’s, reason for an all out, way over the top adult chance to show off their renovated mansion, wealth, and position to just about everyone but birthday girl’s friends. Well wait, there’s Mikayla, but Mikayla is just…messed up!

All the dialogue is relegated to background noise and becomes too easy to shut off as the listener waits for a change to someone else. Not really a thriller, although I must admit I listened to Órlaith. Ethan is just icky. Off with him!

I didn’t think it had all that many twists and turns but did enjoy that last little zinger delivered at the end. HA! Hadn’t given thought to that angle, but yeah. That worked for me.

My Review:

I never get tired of the Andy Carpenter Mystery series and haven’t missed many since discovering them in 2016. In this case, I shared the wealth with the CE back in June of this year. Have to admit, however, he got gypped when he read the ebook, as you can’t beat one of my favorite narrators as the wise-cracking but extremely effective defense attorney.

This is actually a prequel to the popular series, introducing the reader to his first marriage, then to Tara, the Golden Retriever who starts it all. Additional support characters are gradually brought in and we see how the team is formed.

The prequel starts a fledgling criminal attorney position, having left the prosecution side of the court. Tara comes with a buddy, a little dog belonging to a man arrested for murder. Taking on the case of a person accused of blowing up a car resulting in multiple deaths also deals a blow to his already shaky marriage. It is also the introduction to Laurie, an ex-cop investigator.

As he is making friends and influencing people, the stakes are rising to deadly heights. The “I didn’t do it” mantra becomes centrally significant and begs the question, “then, who did?”

It gets complicated and there are no Carpenter books that aren’t. Combined with a snarky sense of humor, lively courtroom scenes, and heart-melting doggy vignettes, it’s a perfect launch for someone who hasn’t started the series. For those who have, but didn’t actually start with Book 1 (when do I ever?), it answers a number of questions.

Grover Gardner became Andy Carpenter a long time ago, but those discovering the series through the prequel will understand how and why he’s now the voice of the quintessential attorney. I always recommend Gardner’s narration over an ebook.

My Review:

I love books with a creepy factor. This one checks that box, though maybe not entirely for the reason you are thinking.

I’m beginning to worry about McFadden’s mind though, she appears to excel in the sick and twisted. At the beginning of the book, it can be assumed Casey is a normally intelligent person, but then she lets a young girl into her cabin in the woods during a massive storm who’s cover in blood. (Yeah, I know, don’t get me started.)

You only think that the girl has a secret. That’s because you are still sifting through the first two-thirds of the book. You have to wonder why a young woman with a decent education and a formerly appropriate job is out of work and in the woods. The back and forth gets you closer to the truth.

The girl with all the blood? Yeah, we’ll get to it. Interesting character development here, but can you allow yourself to lend sympathy with either character? Maybe not. The men, peripheral, support characters give you just enough background to think, “run, Forest, run.”

You might have caught on to the author’s tricks, her twists. The novels are well plotted and paced, engaging and entertaining. Might be compelled to just keep reading. But what you absolutely know you can count on is that one last zinger (really, you expected that?), the one you may not have seen coming. Good for you. This one caught me by surprise.

Again. (Kudos to the narrators for keeping the suspense going.)

Yeah, I’m beginning to catch on, having read two recently, The Housemaid’s Secret and The Boyfriend in August this year. There’s just something about watching a train wreck…
