Heroine: A Brooke Kinley Adventure Novella-Dark, Interesting Cover

Sages's Blog ToursPresented for Review through the “Reading Room” of Sage’s Blog Tours

August 1994 in St. Petersburg of Russia saw a gaggle of pretty girls giggling with each other and flirting with the boys who pretended not to stare while they slyly appreciated the attractive young foursome. It was just too, too easy for this experienced supplier and never should have happened; but it did.

And that was the last thing Anya and Sasha or their friends knew until they were on their way to the northern tip of Minnesota in America where, terrified, Anya ran when she got the chance and fell into the lake below where Brooke and her older brother Jaime were canoeing. It wasn’t long before Brooke and her brother realized they would have a problem protecting this girl, and she was shortly turned over to the local sheriff who would contact Homeland Security for the safe return to her homeland–or so they thought.

It’s not difficult to imagine that having once rescued this pretty, young and frantic person, Brooke would continue to think and worry about her well-being. A little more difficult, however, is the concept that 18-year-old Brooke Kinley (a soon to be investigative journalist still facing her first year of college), would be capable of throwing that safety net. Unfortunately, the sex-trafficking market is very real, even in America.

Brooke is not without strong allies in the small town where her family spent summers in their cozy log cabin and is well known and supported by the good guys, which may well save the day.

A novella, the author wastes no time getting deep into the plot and the storyline moves swiftly. These are not teenagers she is facing though, and the reality would be pretty terrifying. I suspect it might be challenging for an older person, male or female and well armed, much less an 18-year-old female armed with nothing but her wits. Still, the outcome is satisfying, and as I’ve not read “Patriot,” for which this is the prequel, I am not sure how this ties in to that full and best-selling novel. I downloaded the novella free in Four Starexchange for an honest review. I obviously have a little bit of a credibility issue here, but otherwise the tale is worth the read.

So Much Owed – Great Cover

Early protagonist Dr. Richard Buckley survives The Great War, but as with present day PTSD, not without scars–visible or not. He has seen far more than he ever wanted and it still tears him up.

His wife, Edith, bears twins James and Juliet, the latter of whom is spirited enough for both she and her much more reticent twin, James. Dr. Buckley is sickened at heart, but tries to take his place in his beloved Dunderrig, (West Cork) Ireland to serve as physician. He has brought with him the French bride, Solange Allingham, widow of his best friend, with whom they’d shared a pack to care for the other’s family in the event of the death of the other. Cat in the Flock – Cover conveys ethereal quality

Born into a family of “dreamslippers” that skips every other generation, protagonist Cat McCormick is the lucky generation to receive “the gift.”

Part of the “Dreamslipper Series” by Lisa Brunette, “Cat in the Flock” introduces a sideways twist to the always fascinating study of psychic or mystic receivers. Still struggling with how she will come to terms with this unusual paradigm, the recent college graduate has had problems finding employment in St. Louis and accepts an offer from Granny Grace to join her in Seattle where she will be groomed to take over Granny Grace’s PI firm as she carefully mentors her granddaughter in controlled dreamslipping as well. Stone Song

Amazon introduction: “Nominee for the Pulitzer and winner of the Spur Award, ‘Stone Song’ is the classic, and extraordinarily told, story of the Lakota Sioux mystic warrior, Crazy Horse. Of all the iconic figures of Native American history, Crazy Horse remains the most enigmatic. To this day he strides across American history as a man who lived—and died—on his own terms.” This is the 20th Century anniversary edition of a book originally published in 1995.

You don’t have to own a horse to get on this one for a wild ride in history. While “Stone Song” by Win Blevins combined a lot of fact with the fiction, it is to Blevins credit that you’d swear he was personally there to share the story (some 553 pages long), intimately involved in an individual so deeply spiritual that it governed his entire life to a tragic end.

After You’re Dead – Cover Says It All–(Should Have Been My Clue–some how I missed it.)

I’m handicapped in that this is the first Jake Roberts book I’ve read, although “After You’re Dead” is the fifth in the series. Cary Allen Stone is an Amazon #1 Best Selling Author, and 2016 Readers’ Favorite Finalist Award for Crime Fiction and Psychological Thrillers. So when he requested a review, I downloaded and got plunked into the middle of hard-core Hannibal without realizing that was where I was going. Boy did I ever step over my line on this one!! Besides the graphic violence, there is language associated with the narcotrafficking culture!

The tension starts from the first chapter where antagonist #1 is introduced. As the rest of the story unfolds, Richard Graham hangs over your head, turning the screws.

Jake is an ex-cop coming off the death of his beloved Caitland and slowly coming to terms with the help of Katy, his dog (who proves to be an over the top anthropomorphized canine). After he left the APD, he founded a company which has gone widely successful, reaping him some insane levels of discretionary funds, which he freely uses to work his cases.

While a detective in the Atlanta PD, he’d made a LOT of contacts, some borne of grudging mutual respect and one is Pablo, leader of the MexiKings, who seeks his help when there is no one else he can think of who might be able to tackle the rescue of his wife Alana from El Chapo’s successor’s clutches in Mexico. El Mencho is worse–much worse. He gets off with the use of Richard Graham, a psychiatric escapee from the UK who would give the worst cannibalistic, necrophiliast sadist a challenge.

The plot doesn’t lag or stagnate, except perhaps in the exchanges between Jake’s plans for rescue with Pablo–Pablo getting cold feet. The characters are strong–heaven knows the author does a major job of fleshing out (oops–wrong word for this book?) his protagonist and most especially his two antagonists. Several twists are thrown in as the plot develops, not the least of which is Richard’s sideways offer in the climax or the role of Katy in his recovery.

I suspect I might have been able to appreciate Jake more had I read one of the previous in the series, though he does not come across as sympathetic for me. I managed to get through this book, as I promised I would, but this is an extreme type of serial killer, crime thriller and is not my thing.

Four StarI was given this book in exchange for an honest review. The book is well written, I’ll grant you that; just too much for me.

The Eye of Nefertiti – Cover could be darker

WOW! Where do I begin with “The Eye of Nefertiti-A Pharaoh’s Cat Novel” by Maria Luisa Lang? This book is a complete conundrum–a plot that’s unique and a story line that keeps you curious as to where the author could be going with it–but includes typos that signal perhaps it was not quite ready for prime time. You know you are in for something different from the first sentence of the first chapter. This novel was out of my normal genre, totally out of the box, but one with a premise I couldn’t overlook. How do you write a first person story when the first person is a cat? Yes, the protagonist is a cat–but not your ordinary cat.

How do you pick up modern times in a family with a baby and switch to ancient Egypt seamlessly? How is this cat distinctly feline as well as human? Wrappa-Hamen is a cat like no other and, for the most part, fleshed out well, albeit the switch had me confused at times as to whether we were still talking more human than feline, especially near the end of the book. Granted, the cat could actually walk (on two legs), talk, drink (not always lap), and eat foods that might otherwise be very deleterious for a feline, while still dealing with paws (no opposable thumbs). So, here’s how I laid it out: Continue reading “The Eye of Nefertiti-A Pharaoh’s Cat Novel-Review”
