His Review:

Being an Under Secretary to a U.S. President is not an easy task. The title secretary connotes a person setting down with the president to take dictation and process correspondence but Theodore Roosevelt was a dynamic individual who found it very difficult to stay in one place. Noted for his exploits in Cuba with the Rough Riders among other adventures, he ran most of his staff ragged.

France has failed to complete the Panama Canal and Teddy went with a cadre of Secret Service Agents and other dignitaries to assess the progress of the canal. This was the first time a standing president departed from the continental United States. The trip was fraught with peril as many people felt that no government was the best government. Anarchists around the world planned ways to eliminate this bothersome President.

Ms. Wasserman develops a very intriguing tale of intrigue as a number of people try to eliminate this dynamic President. The problem for his security details was his penchant for rushing off in different directions with his security detail in tow attempting to keep him safe. Assassins could be anywhere and vigilance is the name of the game.

Panama during the visit is a virtual sweatshop and enjoys rain every day. Mud is everywhere and the project is monumental. Many of the workers are from the islands around Panama and the workers are divided into segregated groups. The golden group is the whites and the silver group is those other than whites. Panama is an independent country and diplomatic relationships between Panama’s government and the President need to be maintained. Meanwhile, the anarchists are plotting to eliminate this up-start President.

His Review:

Icky Jerusalem is found suffocated in the restroom of a 747! Could this have been a suicide? He seemed to be a little distraught with his decision to cease his life’s work of crafting metaphysical poetry, but would that have caused him to commit suicide? And how could his hands become tied behind his back? Nobody on the transcontinental flight noticed anything unusual in first class!

Being a poet laureate is a daunting responsibility. How does one continue to write prose when the karmic juices are not flowing? Ah, but there are certainly distractions in life that can fill the creative voids. One is the lovely Beulah who had been a professional female wrestler prior to developing hysterical blindness. Icky was her doorway to life’s experience through his magnificent verses. She was more than willing to repay his protection and kindnesses with gifts of her own.

Ded Smith is an Insurance Adjuster whose primary goal is to ferret out insurance claims that are suspect or fraudulent. The $20 million dollar policy taken out just prior to the death of Icky was his next assignment. Icky had a reputed fortune of nearly $350 million, so why take out a $20 million dollar life insurance policy on himself payable to the lovely Beulah? The home office wants to deny the claim!

Twists and turns abound in this frolic of the San Francisco lifestyle. So much to deduce within this novel that waxes metaphysical contemplation or argument amid the prose. I am glad the author brings it to a satisfactory conclusion but it could be considered overly long to do so. 3.5 stars – CE Williams

Women Write More Blog Posts – Are We Still Blogging to Connect or Make a Difference?

Discovered that the audiobook I was going to post yesterday was a repeat (so good I listened to it again years later!), I decided to go on a quest to find an old (really old) post back in 2016 when the blog was still more author/writer oriented than review.

What I found to my horror were some decent posts that lacked extra illustration to support the basic article outline. Then what started as a search for a Throwback Thursday post turned into an odyssey for “fixing” old posts. I’m still working on that having done so already on ten of the more topical articles.

The last two days were spent making corrections, adding pictures and links for posts including Twelve Points for Review Submission and Do You Buy a Book From the Cover? Covers Get You Noticed (or not).

It was the post I titled Women Write More Blog Posts that caught my eye, however, and I wondered if it might be updated. There were a number of good arguments for women taking that honor including polls that agreed:

So the question is? Is that still holding true? Who is writing most blogs today?

Posing that question of the internet gets you this from last year’s stats:

Blogger Statistics By Gender–67.1% of bloggers are women and 32.9% of bloggers are men.

If most of my fellow (female) book bloggers are readers and reviewers how does that stack up if males tend to read male authors? Are women authors getting 67% of the attention?

In 2017 Sarah Burke of Spokal notes that “publishers are quick to encourage new female writers to take a pseudonym if their particular genre of writing is considered ‘masculine’.”

Is it still coming down to the male posting technology while women post to connect? It would appear that it’s changing.

It’s difficult to find definitive information for stats of women bloggers. I love some of the stats that Branka wrote on January 9, 2023, in her article Blogging Statistics of 2023 and wonder how many of these you are aware?

There are over 600 million blogs on the internet (31 million in the US).
Of 1030 surveyed bloggers by First Site Guide, 524 are male and 488 are female or just over 51% male. (That’s a big difference over last year’s findings and those numbers don’t add to 1030.) And by the way, more than 50% of bloggers are 21 to 35 years old. Most blog readers are 31 to 40 years old, while more than 37% are 40 to 60 years (yay!)
Ninety percent of bloggers rely on social media to promote their posts. (SEO at 68%)
Blog titles should be between six and thirteen words.

The shift of female bloggers diversifying somewhat from female-focused media to content creation for business gained significant ground years ago with the advent of an easily produced video presence. More and more women are specializing in promoting brand management, content creation, SEO, and digital marketing.

Conclusion

There continues to be a debate on whether men or women host more blogs, particularly as to their content. But as women bloggers and reviewers increase their impact on business and technological avenues, these percentages will continue to evolve. Any inroad is a positive step. Yes?

His Review:

Jane Larkin had been in love with Dan since high school. They had three lovely children with their youngest being Miranda in the seventh grade. The family did everything together with Dan being a very successful attorney. When Jane goes missing in November 1975, the family is frantic.

The police start an investigation into the disappearance and are unable to find anything regarding Jane’s whereabouts. The case lingers and the first suspect is Dan. There is no evidence to connect him with the crime but a dogged investigator, Mr. Glover, continues to investigate the whereabouts. Surely a loving mother like Jane Larkin would not simply leave and abandon her children.

This novel is very well structured and developed with a number of twists and turns. I developed a real empathy for the characters and their sudden loss of a very beloved mother. Would a devoted mother and wife suddenly decide that she can no longer stay with her husband and care for her family?

William Landay has written a very interesting novel about a family torn apart by the disappearance of the wife and mother and subsequent turmoil of ongoing suspicion. I found the novel disturbing and sad. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

[Note from V: When I listened to the audiobook Defending Jacob, I was blown away by the heart-pounding and gripping novel with that unbelievable twist at the end. Of course, the audiobook was narrated by one of my favorite authors, Grover Gardner. No question the author writes a chillingly hard domestic thriller.]

His Review:

Could mankind be destroyed by a new disease? This novel explores an apocalyptical era where Earth’s inhabitants die from an extremely toxic and rapidly spreading disease. Those who do not die from the disease are changed into people with bad breathing problems. The dying easily pass on the disease.

The government sets up compounds where those afflicted can be quarantined. Old ski lodges are used for this purpose. A good portion of the story centers around survivors being stuck on a chair lift around 250 yards from the ski lodge. Those stuck in the gondola are trying to make it to the lodge but the cables have problems. They are stuck in the air one thousand feet above the ski slope.

The characters are well-developed and the novel points out the selfishness and avarice that people exhibit trying to save themselves. Killing is random and the more selfish of the group tend to become survivors.

I’ve read several books by this author including A Sliver of Darkness and was not quite prepared for the heavy side of horror and apocalypse. It was well-written and paced but was just a little too much blood and guts for me. 4 stars – CE Williams

Katherine McMahon Johnson is married to Robert Johnson who adores her. She is the light of his life and he does everything he can to make her happy. Her marriage is a good one. The problem is that they have met Nikola Tesla. He is tall and brilliant and she is swept off her feet. Nikola on the other hand is a faithful friend to her husband and repulses her overtures.

Katherine fantasizes about a complete physical relationship with Nikola throughout her life. She raises children with Robert and they are placed at various embassies around the world representing our government. The problem is her infatuation never wavers. She recognizes her problem but cannot forget about Nikola and his aristocratic demeanor.

Her fantasies ultimately make her ill and reclusive. Neither her husband nor her children can shake her lust for Nikola. Even when stationed in foreign countries she continues to obsess over him! Such obsessive behavior and lust are overwhelming in their driving nature.

The narrative is at times slow paced and repetitive. Had hoped for a bit more Nikola and a little less obsessed Katherine. 3.5 stars – CE Williams

His Review:

The Russian mob is getting very tired of the American police units and particularly the Alaska State Troopers. One spoiled son of the lead gangster Maxim Rudenko is Alex. Alex wants to show everyone in the mob just how great and terrifying he can be. His father tries to hold him in check. He leads a group to hunt down the Alaska State Troopers as he felt this would give him a high ranking in the Russian mob.

Sam Benjamin has been in the force for over twenty years and is out on the lonely roads of Alaska doing routine coverage of the wide-open spaces. Alex and his cohorts decide to ambush Sam on the lonely Alaskan highway. Sam stops to assist what he believes is a stalled vehicle in the tundra and is cruelly killed by Alex and the group. The vehicle is hidden to slow down the search for the missing trooper and Alex feels he is now a Russian man.

The entire Alaska State Troopers cadre discovers the body and clues left that clearly identify the Russian mob and set out to avenge their fallen comrade and the hunt begins. Both the hunted and the hunters are bent on capturing or eliminating each other!

Arliss Cutter has been friends with Sam since he was a cub with the force. Everyone is intent on finding and bringing his killers to justice. There is an annual convention being held in Juneau for the Chief Justices of the American Court System and Alex hears that the AST will be providing security for the event. Alex sees that they will be able to kill a U.S. Supreme Court justice as well as the majority of the AST by acting as security for the event.

This is a fast-moving Arliss Cutter and Alaska State Trooper novel showing how quickly quiet can turn into bedlam and many people can die. The criminal minds are ruthless and dedicated to killing their enemies which includes anyone in law enforcement or the judicial system. Arliss Cutter and Chief Justice Morehouse are excellent candidates for the rampage.

We’ve read and reviewed other entries to this series, including most recently Book 4, Cold Snap, and Book 3, Bone Rattle, and always find them action-packed and fast-paced as well as intelligent and atmospheric. It’s fascinating to read of Alaska—our northern mysterious giant frontier. This read is fast paced and entertaining and can be read as a standalone. 5 stars – CE Williams

December always sweeps in on an icy blast with more activities to accomplish associated with the holidays than can be easily handled.

Frosty, our Bichon Frise Despite the winter chill, the CE and I managed to get out for a couple walks and one or two additional short rides (around the block) before the bikes had to be left to cool in the garage for the winter. The frigid storm that hit near Christmas dropped outside temps to -0F with a wind chill factor of -34F, which alarmed me sufficiently that I felt I needed to protect Frosty’s little ears and put booties on her little paws for potty time. The CE is always very good at shoveling a small path for her as it’s too difficult to try and keep little booties on her paws in several inches of snow.

I worry about the wild critters in those conditions too and wonder how they manage to survive–much less the homeless—more than 16,000 in Chicago according to the news. It’s a blessing to have a roof overhead with food in the fridge and I think that’s Christmas gift enough—that and our health—knock on wood.

Reading in December took a back seat but we still managed ten books and audiobooks. A hard look at my schedule had me paring one post per week and I’ll keep that schedule into the new year with an occasional extra post. The current schedule is ebook reviews on Sunday and Tuesday and an audiobook review on Thursday. As I mentioned before, I took on (Amazon) Vine reviews that have proven to take more time than expected as well as a new preview club the CE and I are participating in as well. The latter is interesting but of course appears to also take more time than we expected. Have you heard of the Netflix Preview Club? Are you a member?

Swamp Story was super and too short. A laugh out loud silly storyline that has you shaking your head while gobbling up the next chapter. It will be on my favorites of the year list and is totally recommended!

Reading Challenges

My challenges page has been caught up through December. As mentioned before, that page will undergo a change for 2023. My 2022 challenges have been achieved and I will take a look at the new schedule and adjust the challenges as well. I hope to have the new Reading Challenges page updated for the 2023 challenges some time in mid-January.
