We’ve not missed one book in this series and as it’s one we both enjoy, we chose this novel as another buddy read.

My Review:

These are always fun to get into and never fail to deliver a fast, intelligent, and easy read.

This installment has Jake cruising in the Sea of Cortez with Sarah and Cody, his retired military K-9 on a mission to catch an assassin and a narco dealer delivering heavy-duty weapons to Baja. Jake is cooperating with Mexico, carries a US marshall’s badge, and connects with local authorities to help find the assassin, capture, and deliver the dealers and their cargo.

Jake is smart, combat experienced, and together with his equal on four feet and fur manage to stay a step ahead of his targets. These are multi-layered episodes and complex and there is always something to learn as they’ve been well researched.

Written simply, the storyline includes a sense of humor and emotion, balanced with a dollop of romance and travelogue experience. I do love Cody—such a special dog—and he can be formidable when he wants.

The installment is fast, can be violent, but rewarding as well and one could hope there might be these hardy individuals working to curb the influx of guns and drugs into our country—something both countries can agree on.

His Review:

Is there such a thing as a quiet cruise in the Sea of Cortez? With the large number of drug smugglers and opportunists, the answer is no. Cartels have become very sophisticated and they attempt to control all shipping through this area. This is the gateway to the very lucrative U.S. drug market.

Jake Wolfe is aboard his 60-foot motor yacht, Far Niente; parked at the marina in Cabo San Lucas. He has an agreement with the Mexican Government to assist in controlling the flow of illegal drugs into the United States. The drug dealers are well aware of his mission and there are multiple targets on his back; as well as bounties for the people who capture or kill him and put Far Niente out of business.

Mark Nolan’s writing style keeps the reader enthusiastically engaged and the book is hard to put down. With his girlfriend Sarah, along with Cody his retired service dog, they are usually only minutes ahead of his hunters. Each of the three characters has integral contributions to the outcome of the book. This makes the read very enjoyable. 5 stars – CE Williams

The duo of Jake and Cody (along with Sarah now) are engaging, intelligent, fast, cunning, and capable, but tender and generous at the same time! The CE read the last several and I figured it was my turn as I enjoy these action thrillers as well. These can be read as a standalone and all are recommended.

My Review:

Not my first Christmas cozy with Vicki Delany, I previously listened to Silent Night, Deadly Night (Book 4 of the series). This one has another narrator and the storyline is only slightly annoying. Since hubby loves his Hallmark movies and they become overwhelming at Christmas time, I guess my tolerance for violins and sappy seasonal tales leaves me cold as fresh Christmas snow. Still, I feel that obligation to provide a Christmas novel.

This is the seventh installment and involves Merry Wilkinson’s best friend Vicky Casey. She and her intended Chef Mark Grosse will be moving into the historic Cole House. Scuttlebutt is that it’s haunted and has a tragic history. Well, that it does, and the house has been abandoned a long time.

Vicky and Merry come across a dead body in the garden of Cole House—it’s the fella laying claim to the property—and the problem is that it’s Mark who is standing over the deceased. (Is that one of his knives?)

In a town the size of Rudolph, there will be plenty of people who know the history and I love me a good haunted house story. Vicky is freaking and thinking she’ll postpone their wedding while Merry needs to take care of her own little retail establishment with Easter approaching.

Merry will support Vicky while they are working on solving the problems with the house, Mark being a person of interest in the homicide, and the personal lives of support characters. I always enjoy the inclusion of a dog and this one is fun. I had a difficult time becoming engaged with the main character but on the whole enjoyed this episode more so than the last.

Not really a Christmas story, a Christmas-themed town, and a very convoluted plot, rather slow to pick up steam. Also, I had a difficult time believing the person in the reveal—really?

His Review:

Britain in the late 1500’s was not a pleasant place to live. Serfdom was just coming to an end and wages were pitifully low. Anyone with property was a target to all of the oppressed population. One needed bodyguards to go to the pubs or houses of ill repute and were always a target of the poor. Jack Blackjack was one of those targets.

Jack maintained a number of houses and had many enemies. He was a dandy who enjoyed the favors of many of the young ladies in the village. He was known and often chased by those who hated him. He had worked with both Lady Elisabeth and Queen Mary and had received a Royal pardon for his crimes. This did not sit well with his enemies.

This tome reveals a time in history when individual life was not worth much. Being well armed with swords and knives as well as cudgels was essential. Jack continues to live by the craftiness of his upbringing and his attention to detail. Living in this part of the past would not be a welcoming environment. Enjoy Jack’s escapades. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

The Author: Who is this guy Jecks?

Michael was a moderate student and early on, being a callow youth, decided on a career as an actuary. This decision was based solely on the fact that he heard it was the highest paid profession. Well, he had a father who was one, and a brother, too, but the money certainly helped.

Not realizing that a standard definition of an actuary is “someone who finds accountancy too exciting”, he achieved the relevant grades at A level and wandered off to City University, London. There, he excelled – as bar chairman – but not at actuarial studies. Firmly convinced that his course was incomprehensible (Life & Other Contingencies? Advanced Statistics? Programming in Pascal?) and other parts were designed by knaves, cretins and the criminally insane (Economics), he left the course after failing every exam for two years.

With the glittering example of a second, unqualified, brother who earned very good money, had a bonus scheme, free car, free petrol, expense account and free holiday each year, Michael decided to follow this brother into computer sales.

Moving to safer shores with software sales, Michael joined IBM’s largest software supplier, Bluebird. They went bust a year later (owing him a lot).

Out of Computing, Into Writing

In three months, Michael worked seven days a week, fourteen hours a day. In that time he wrote a modern day thriller, a management book on how to get work when made redundant (he had experience of that) and a historical crime novel that was to become The Last Templar.

Since 1995 and the launch of The Last Templar, Michael has been a persistent and prolific author. City of Fiends was the 31st story in the series that follows the lives of Sir Baldwin de Furnshill, a renegade Templar, and his friend Bailiff Simon Puttock through the miserable period of famine, war and disease that was the first half of the fourteenth century.

My Review:

I do enjoy mysteries and whodunits and always willing to try a new author to me. The blurb sets up a mystery involving conflict between the residents of a little seaside village and the seasonal weekenders who are buying up the older homes and turning them into luxury getaways.

And that prospect begins the storyline with a music festival that ends in tragedy when two teenagers OD. Guess I expected that’s the direction the plot would take, but you know what happens when you jump to assumptions.

The reader is introduced to Elise King, fighting her way through a cancer regime and still experiencing chemo brain. Admittedly, she acknowledges brain fog, memory loss, and concentration. She was a successful detective prior to her diagnosis and treatment and now would love to return to work. But she’s a little afraid to push it, recognizing her current limitations.

So when the teenagers OD and Charlie Perry disappears, Elise is a bit reluctant to jump back into her role when requested to do so by her old boss. Fortunately, she has a rather nosy older neighbor who would love to be an unofficial associate and is more than happy to help when Elise requests her assistance with Ronnie’s expertise in researching.

In the meantime…enter the housekeeper of many of the local homes forced into the role by the loss of her hubby’s job and income. Dee Eastwood has discovered she’s “invisible” to those whose homes she quietly goes about cleaning, while being privy to their conversations, secrets around the house, and their relationships.

Charlie Perry becomes sympathetic when the reader is introduced to his wife Pauline who appears to be more than a little narcissistic. But then it’s also discovered that Charlie wasn’t the sweet, friendly neighbor thought to be and in fact had put himself in a precarious financial position trying to care for his daughter.

Multiple POVs, lots of characters, many of whom are not wholly developed. The plot breaks down into sub-plots. I did like Elise and admired her successful struggle with her health circumstances, but with all the characters and a rather slow moving pace, there were times when I tuned out the narration of the audiobook. There is a twist at the end I didn’t expect and in the end a surprising discovery in conclusion.

The case isn’t as simple as Andy thought it would be, though, with BJ suspected of murdering one of his professors. With nothing to go on but Andy’s own conviction in BJ’s dog-loving character, proving his innocence would be a Christmas miracle.

With equal doses of doggy humor and courtroom drama, as well as Andy Carpenter’s traditional humbug Christmas spirit, David Rosenfelt delivers another winner.

My Review:

Another doggy series and one I adore from David Rosenfelt and Grover Gardner. No, Gardner didn’t help write it, but his familiar voice and the way he narrates Andy Carpenter keep you coming back for more. This is number thirty? No problem—I’m already looking forward to number thirty-one (except I hope we don’t have more of the Jersey mob in the next one),

Yes, it’s a popular and successful formula, but these characters all come together in each of their roles perfectly drawn and work beautifully. Even better, you could come in on number thirty as easily as number five as the author supplies the reader with enough background info to show you how they relate to the overall main character, Andy Carpenter.

Still, those of us who know and love Andy at this point remember that Laurie (his wife and ex-cop) still starts Christmas before Halloween, he’s still paying for (and threatening to cut them off) his buddies at their favorite haunt, and he still walks and talks to his dogs while pondering his cases. All except for Sebastian who he has finally acquiesced to allowing him to do his business without the long walks. Tara hasn’t rescued Andy lately, could still do so, but patiently listens to his arguments without comment.

In this episode, Murphy, a terrier, shows up at Andy’s door step one evening, a past rescue, Andy’s main passion. He remembers her of course and tracks down the mother and son who adopted the dog. Unfortunately, the son has been arrested for murder. Of course, Andy will take the case even as he vows to stop being a criminal attorney. These cases just keep popping up keeping him from fully retiring.

While you might think this formula could get old, it doesn’t for several reasons. I love the sarcastic sense of humor, the quick wit that keeps him on his feet both with dealing with law enforcement, other lawyers, and in the courtroom. That sharp mind almost misses nothing and when it does, niggles at him until he susses it out.

These stories are deemed cozy mysteries, but they far exceed the cozy concept with deeply complex and layered storylines and always keep you second guessing. Love the courtroom “dance” and I usually learn something new. In this case, the metaverse. Metaverse!!—really?

His Review:

Running a motel is not an easy task. Mess Hopkins expects to inherit one from his parents, but he has been left with the management task. Problem is, Mess is a very compassionate man and is a sucker for a sob story. The motel is barely staying afloat and continues to limp along.

Finn is his cousin who has been missing for years. He suddenly shows up after being a lost soul and his family is very irritated with him. Mess and Finn were best friends as youngsters and they are happy to be back together. Finn has declared that he is gay and also that he witnessed a murder. He is sure that the murderers are after him.

The manager that Mess hired to help run the motel is a character who really does all the work. He is continually admonishing Mess for his lack of attention to detail and also for letting rooms to vagabonds who are unable to pay.

Killers hunting for Finn and continual management issues keep this novel moving. Will mismanagement finally doom the motel? Will the killers catch up with Finn and eliminate the family problem? Will the rest of the family finally accept Finn for who he is and bring him back into the fold? Read this well-written novel and find out. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

Note: The CE read and reviewed Sanctuary Motel last year and greatly enjoyed it. This series is well-plotted and moves smoothly through the storyline. Mess is an emotive character, garners empathy, and is easy to become invested in.

He’s written two books in the Last Laff mystery series, KILLER ROUTINE and DEADLY CAMPAIGN (also from Midnight Ink), and writing as his darker half Zak Allen, he’s published three books: THE TASTE, FIRST TIME KILLER, and RIDE-ALONG. His novel, RUNNING FROM THE PAST, was one of the initial Kindle Scout selections.

His novel, PRAY FOR THE INNOCENT, won the 2019 ITW Thriller Award for Best E-Book Original.

His novel, I KNOW WHERE YOU SLEEP, was a Shamus Award Finalist for Best First PI Novel.

Holly Swimsuit Mystery Book 5

My Review:

Oh my stars, I did it again—accepted another cozy mystery (yes, me), cleverly reeled in by the cover and the request by Holly Schwartz for Susie Black. This is that one, you know, with the unlikely protagonist, Holly Schlivnik. Nothing boring about Holly! She lives in a houseboat while being a President of Mermaid Swimwear. (Yes, and there are interesting bits of marketing strategy included.) She also has Siggie, the dog with all the answers, if you know how to interpret them appropriately.

Once again, dialogue can be refreshingly sharp, Holly doesn’t always apply a filter. Still, she seems to have that sixth sense in these matters, albeit at times difficult to grasp. Once again, she meets the Yentas daily, including Queenie Levine. Her bestie, Assistant Medical Examiner Sophia Cutler MD (also known as Snip) is good for a laugh.

Need I say there is a raft of remarkable support characters? This time the crew put their heads together to solve the mystery of the death of the department store Easter Bunny when Sue Ellen (aka the “Queen of Mean”) is arrested for the crime. Okay, granted she wasn’t exactly a favorite among the industry, but Sue Ellen? No way!

I did note in Book 4, Death by Cutting Table, the number of references to Nancy Drew. I didn’t see as much of that this time, but a new one popped up, “Thank the Goddess.” Where did that come from and why?

On the whole, I enjoy this wacky series, the main characters and those around her. The narrative generally stays on track, although there are some twists and red herrings, still some involvement in the romance interest this time, although she is reconsidering it. The novel moves with a good pace and is well plotted, and I always appreciate a good dog involved in the storyline. Additionally, there are always a few tidbits to learn.

My Review:

Of course, I chose this book because it was located in Chicago. Now that I live in “Chicagoland” I’m interested in local food, color, history, and atmospheric description. This one highlights Belverton College where the body of Brice Collier was found in a field near Hardwicke House and the exclusive Minotaur Society reigns supreme.

Coincidentally, or maybe not so, it “echoed” somewhat an unsolved death from thirty years before. Detective Harriet “Harri” Foster and her partner Detective Vera Li land the case. Harri is a strong protagonist, but I really appreciated Vera’s wise backup support. I loved the way they bounced off each other, Harri tending to explode into action while Vera quietly waited for her to chill. Vera can handle things thoughtfully—she has a family and errs on the side of caution.

The author builds the suspense slowly, dropping bits and pieces, supplying twists and turns for misdirection. It works. Interwoven with the main storyline is an unresolved plot line from a previous series installment and Harri is still hot on the trail of any thread she can pull looking to vindicate her former partner. Essentially kept in the background, it doesn’t over-power the current storyline.

This is the third in the trilogy and apparently the end of the series. It could be read as a standalone, however. I previously read Book 3 of the author’s Chicago Mystery series, What You Don’t See, and greatly enjoyed it. This is an author who writes strong but not infallible women within law enforcement. If you enjoy crime fiction, PI investigators, or women sleuths, you may very well enjoy her soft palate style of writing.
