My Review:

Once again I blundered into a series that is written by more than one author. I’ve read neither author before but thinking this is a good start, as I certainly enjoyed it.

It’s a sweet read, entertaining, and of course my big draw—dogs.

In this case, however, one is discovered having had a “Z” painted on the side of him. The main character, Cassidy Carter, is the Lone Star Veterinary Clinic’s office manager involved in the Second Chance Ranch Dog Rescue, all round gofer. So it is when the regular person in charge of taking an abandoned dog call is otherwise occupied, Cassidy goes to find the dog. She does and in hazardous conditions.

Later also involved is game warden Justin Cameron. Justin apparently has an unwelcome entourage—a television reality show in which he’s involved. I won’t call this inst-love, but it supplies the romance part of the cozy theme mystery.

I liked the dogs in the storyline as well as the inclusion of humorous highlights, not so much Justin. He bothered me as being too hovering, controlling, and for me the red flags popped up. Not so for Cassidy apparently as, of course, he is gorgeous, sexy, and studly.

In the meantime, there appears more than one dog sporting painted “Z”s on their furry sides and it’s time to zero in on the perp. I did have a little problem with the reveal—another of those who do not appear in the plot throughout the book. No way to have guessed who.

The pacing is fine and it’s wholesome. I liked Cassidy except for the CYA she issued more than once regarding her position being “just an office manager.” Maybe so, however, the setting is interesting, the characters (for the most part) engaging, and I’ll likely seek a second in the series.

His Review:

Icky Jerusalem is found suffocated in the restroom of a 747! Could this have been a suicide? He seemed to be a little distraught with his decision to cease his life’s work of crafting metaphysical poetry, but would that have caused him to commit suicide? And how could his hands become tied behind his back? Nobody on the transcontinental flight noticed anything unusual in first class!

Being a poet laureate is a daunting responsibility. How does one continue to write prose when the karmic juices are not flowing? Ah, but there are certainly distractions in life that can fill the creative voids. One is the lovely Beulah who had been a professional female wrestler prior to developing hysterical blindness. Icky was her doorway to life’s experience through his magnificent verses. She was more than willing to repay his protection and kindnesses with gifts of her own.

Ded Smith is an Insurance Adjuster whose primary goal is to ferret out insurance claims that are suspect or fraudulent. The $20 million dollar policy taken out just prior to the death of Icky was his next assignment. Icky had a reputed fortune of nearly $350 million, so why take out a $20 million dollar life insurance policy on himself payable to the lovely Beulah? The home office wants to deny the claim!

Twists and turns abound in this frolic of the San Francisco lifestyle. So much to deduce within this novel that waxes metaphysical contemplation or argument amid the prose. I am glad the author brings it to a satisfactory conclusion but it could be considered overly long to do so. 3.5 stars – CE Williams

His Review:

Jane Larkin had been in love with Dan since high school. They had three lovely children with their youngest being Miranda in the seventh grade. The family did everything together with Dan being a very successful attorney. When Jane goes missing in November 1975, the family is frantic.

The police start an investigation into the disappearance and are unable to find anything regarding Jane’s whereabouts. The case lingers and the first suspect is Dan. There is no evidence to connect him with the crime but a dogged investigator, Mr. Glover, continues to investigate the whereabouts. Surely a loving mother like Jane Larkin would not simply leave and abandon her children.

This novel is very well structured and developed with a number of twists and turns. I developed a real empathy for the characters and their sudden loss of a very beloved mother. Would a devoted mother and wife suddenly decide that she can no longer stay with her husband and care for her family?

William Landay has written a very interesting novel about a family torn apart by the disappearance of the wife and mother and subsequent turmoil of ongoing suspicion. I found the novel disturbing and sad. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

[Note from V: When I listened to the audiobook Defending Jacob, I was blown away by the heart-pounding and gripping novel with that unbelievable twist at the end. Of course, the audiobook was narrated by one of my favorite authors, Grover Gardner. No question the author writes a chillingly hard domestic thriller.]

His Review:

Could mankind be destroyed by a new disease? This novel explores an apocalyptical era where Earth’s inhabitants die from an extremely toxic and rapidly spreading disease. Those who do not die from the disease are changed into people with bad breathing problems. The dying easily pass on the disease.

The government sets up compounds where those afflicted can be quarantined. Old ski lodges are used for this purpose. A good portion of the story centers around survivors being stuck on a chair lift around 250 yards from the ski lodge. Those stuck in the gondola are trying to make it to the lodge but the cables have problems. They are stuck in the air one thousand feet above the ski slope.

The characters are well-developed and the novel points out the selfishness and avarice that people exhibit trying to save themselves. Killing is random and the more selfish of the group tend to become survivors.

I’ve read several books by this author including A Sliver of Darkness and was not quite prepared for the heavy side of horror and apocalypse. It was well-written and paced but was just a little too much blood and guts for me. 4 stars – CE Williams

My Review:

A timely read for February, this one written by an author with an exceptional curriculum vitae of American history.

Although this begins early in the 1800s, there are three time periods in which the telling of the original story plays out. It is Ulysses Brooke who crafts a plan that he hopes will benefit not only Cato, his childhood buddy, but the rest of the slaves on his family’s farm. With the realization he cannot pull his plan off by himself, he actually enlists the help of Cato and another boyhood friend who holds the same abolitionist sentiments as he.

Yes, he’s going to steal the very gold that has been gleaned by the slave market, but he won’t be caught with it as he creates a trove of buried treasure. He’s careful about all the locations having created a book in which detailed maps and instructions are left regarding the location of each burial site. Brilliant, huh? And he manages to do this successfully for years.

Enter the second era and a long one, the Billings family believe they are not only descendants of one of the three, but have the map book and proof they should legally have rights to the hoard. Sam Billings has unlocked much info from his family’s past and he grapples with it for decades.

Left now almost a century later to wrestle further over the investigation by FBI agent Starkman and his wife Faye (a woman of color), the FBI man bites like a bulldog into the story after an appearance in his office by descendants, hoping to finally get to the bottom of the whole thing.

The period of time with Ulysses is dark, emotional, and at times heart-wrenching. You want so much for Ulysses to succeed in his endeavors, his heart is in the right place, he and Cato well fleshed and empathetic. The long period with Sam could at times be a bit confusing, reconciling the year, and characters involved in his portion of the story. It seemed to slow the pace somewhat. The conclusion with the FBI agent draws most threads together, however, providing a satisfying ending to a complex and topical, well-written storyline.

Rosepoint Reviews – January Recap—Hello February!

January fooled us with mild temps right until the last week or so when we experienced the frigid northern blast. It was to be expected, not necessarily appreciated.

I wrote last month about the storm that reached alarming -0 temps. I worried about Frosty and her little ears and feet and supplied a handkerchief for her ears and booties for her paws. Unfortunately, she contracted pneumonia and we lost her on her 17^th birthday, breaking my heart. While I know it was a virus and not the temps, it’s still very difficult to reconcile and will take a while to ease the crush on my heart.

So it was a challenge to keep to a schedule and my reading and posting took a hit. Between us, we managed a total of twelve reviews, a mix of NetGalley reads, audiobooks, award-winning authors as well as Indie authors.

January Favorite

It can be tricky to discern which of the CEs books would make the January favorites as he continues to read without my often critical eye. Of the books read in January, two really stood out: Sea Castle and The Huntress. In his case, once he started reading the Sea Castle, he couldn’t put it down. A tie in the January slot?Yes and No. I’d have to give the coveted January slot to the one noted above. Could you guess from the graphic?

Freeing up my time a bit to do some blog hopping, I’ve been enjoying the opportunity of catching up with some of my favorite blogger buddies. I hope to list a favorite post each month and if this blogger is new to you, urge you to check out their blogs as well.

The review of The Woman in the Window at Digital Reads Media caught my eye and gave me a chuckle or two. Shalini, however, offers services to writers beyond reviews including blog tours and is social media savvy.

My Reading Challenges page…As mentioned before, I’ve overhauled the page for 2023 (managing to lose my entire 2022 Challenges page in the process) and will be posting monthly totals only this year. My 2022 challenges were achieved but I’ve adjusted 2023 challenge goals down.

I’m setting my NetGalley Challenge goal at Gold this year, 50 books. (Last year at Platinum, 75, was a struggle.) Audiobook Challenge at Marathoner – 50 – should be no problem at an average of four per week. Cutting back from 180 to 145 in the Goodreads Challenge, and lastly, the Historical Fiction Challenge will stay the same at 50 – Prehistoric, as this genre is proving to be one of our favorites. Which challenges are you trying this year? Achieve all your goals last year?

His Review:

She was laying on a beach with a rope around her neck. The forensic team felt she had been in the water for at least twenty hours. Sloan McPherson could not reconcile that in her mind with the condition of the body. Nothing had been nibbling on it!

Killers are not always prudent. Sometimes it seems like they are trying to get caught. Why would someone leave the victim’s clothes and other crime evidence in a black plastic bag near the body? And although the victim was chocked with the rope attached to her body, why were there no self-defense marks or evidence of a struggle?

CE Williams Andrew Mayne has put together a very illuminating study of killers and the law enforcement personnel who set out to apprehend them. This is a very good example of fine police procedural work. The book is witty and at time disarming as the various characters are developed. The end result is a very engaging and entertaining book that I couldn’t put down. 5 stars – CE Williams

Three young girls create a friendship bond in Germany in the early 1930’s. They had attended grammar school together and two of the three were poor. Anna was a Jewish girl raised by a family whose father owned a small factory. They treated their workers well but were never really integrated into common Jewish society.

A fourth girl tried to join Anna, Elisa, and Bernie. Dagna felt like an outsider in the group and was jealous of Anna and her family’s wealth. She often felt left out of most discussions and assured herself she would make Anna pay in the future. She leaned strongly towards the Young Nationalist Party headed by the new Chancellor, Adolf Hitler.

Although Anna’s father adhered to all government edicts and paid taxes and supported the government, he was not accepted by the new government. There were always surprise inspections and other government intrusions into his business. Ultimately his factory is taken over and he and his family’s properties are commandeered and the family is put out into the street penniless. Anna and her parents are sent to a special “reeducation camp”.

Jealousy from a young girl leads to family imprisonment and ultimately to one of the “Ultimate Solution Gas Chambers”. Sadly many of the issues faced by Anne Frank are paralleled by Anna and her family. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

This is a good start to a new series and will hold interest for most historical fiction readers. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book.

But what I do know is that soon all of the survivors will be gone. Their message must be remembered, the sacrifices that they made must not be forgotten. And so I humbly and with the utmost humility I try to tell their stories. It is painful, but I must convey the darkness and horror of the time, However, I also want the world to know and celebrate the unsung heroes. Because there were many ordinary people who acted in heroic ways. I realize that writing these books is a great responsibility. I pray every day that I am able to do this correctly. I am trying to reach out and touch many people, not with the message of the horrors but with the promise of hope. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering my work. It is an honor that I never take lightly.
