This week I am highlighting Toby Neal, another terrific, prolific author who wrote so many of the wonderful books that I got free from BookBub, several of which I reviewed on Goodreads. I wrote a #throwbackthursday on August 21, 2017 regarding the Lei Crime series which posted a review for Torch Ginger and also included info regarding Blood Orchids, the first in the series.

I started reading the Lei Crime series back in 2014 (before I posted many reviews with Goodreads) with Book 1, Blood Orchids, and have loved them all. Lei Texeira is a damaged but strong female protagonist. I’ve followed her journey in the Maui (Hawaii) Police Department as she’s climbed through the ranks. Along the way, she met Michael Stevens, also with the MPD. Their relationship was explosive, but they were obviously meant to be a couple.

Introduced in the Lei crime thrillers was Sophie Ang, Fed ITT and I followed her along as well with Wired Rogue a spin-off of the Lei Crime novels. I’ve enjoyed this series as well and watched the characters grow. Each book brings new surprises and fascinating tidbits about our fiftieth state. Dark Lava by Toby Neal

The last one I reviewed was Dark Lava, Lei Crime Novel Book 7. I’ll repeat the book blurb here, but if you haven’t already discovered Toby Neal’s books, you owe it to yourself to look into these series. This week I am highlighting Helen Haught Fanick, another terrific, prolific author who wrote Moon Signs (Moon Mystery #1), which I reviewed on Goodreads. This novel was published on October 6, 2011 and now has five in the series with a new one to be added this year. She consistently runs approximately 4-5 stars for any of her books sold on Amazon.

Book Blurb:

Retirement is a time for knitting, gardening, and an occasional quiet lunch with friends, according to Kathleen Williamson. Her sister Andrea has an altogether different point of view. When the sisters go to the Canaan Valley to search for paintings mentioned in a document found in an old hotel once owned by their grandparents—paintings that might be Monets—Andrea immediately becomes involved in tracking down a murderer. Kathleen would much rather be looking for the paintings, but she goes along with Andrea, since the victim was their hotel-keeper, murdered just down the hall from their room. The question is: Does the murder have something to do with the elusive paintings?

There are many clues and many suspects, including hotel staff, valley residents, and the mysterious foreigners who come from the Eastern Seaboard for skiing. There are also many types of danger—icy roads, sub-zero temperatures, and a killer who doesn’t care how many people die in the attempt to make sure the right ones do.

My Review:

Taking a short break from their retirement, two sisters (a widow and never married school teacher) go on a search for possible Monet paintings acquired by their grandparents who owned and decorated a West Virginia ski resort hotel. Their niece works out of the lodge as a ski instructor and is in love with the male co-owner whose recalcitrant “sister” is found in unfortunate circumstances very early into the plot.

I enjoyed several aspects of the book in that the protagonists were intelligent, mature senior women, Kathleen (the narrator) being the widow with a slightly dependent affinity while her take charge, level-headed former school teacher sibling, Andrea, charges full steam into the mystery leaving the discovery of the Monet paintings one of the sub-themes. She is definitely on the nosy side. Also enjoyed was the interaction of the sisters–found to be pretty plausible. There is a second fatality, but we are spared the gory details as well as the mushy romance between the niece and her struggling lover.

They eventually fit in the painting search, discuss whether or not the moon position had anything to do with the doin’s, and include a moody teenager among the characters. Leveled for a senior sensibility, interesting deviation from the usual testosterone driven, four-letter mentality, it’s a cozy mystery and although well-plotted tends to take it slow and easy. I downloaded the free ebook from BookBub and liked it. Would recommend to those who enjoy a mystery with a different but trending, emerging protagonist focus.

This week I am highlighting Rick Mofina, another terrific, prolific author who wrote The Dying Hour. Today’s review is written by the C.E., my intrepid associate reviewer. I love that he is usually up for a variety of genre and this one took him by surprise. Yeah, knew it would! 😏 (This was his first Mofina.) I’ve read several before and last posted a review of Cold Fear for Throwback Thursday on February 8, 2018. This novel was published by Carrick Publishing on April 8, 2015. Mofina consistently runs approximately 4.5-5 stars for any of his books sold on Amazon.

#ThrowbackThursday – The Dirty Parts of the Bible by Sam Torode

OMG, I can’t believe I’m just getting to this particular author and his book, The Dirty Parts of the Bible for a Throwback Thursday!

I previously mentioned it in an article I wrote regarding historical fiction. Sam Torode has written other stand-alone books, along with such co-authors as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oscar Wilde, and James Allen. I reviewed The Dirty Parts of the Bible on Goodreads. This novel was self-published in March 2010. Torode garnered an amazing 2,109 reviews of which more than 1,000 were five stars and was a semi-finalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards. Amazon classifies the novel as literary fiction, humor and satire, coming-of-age.

My Review:

Mac Walker is returning to Washington DC after a well-earned vacation and prior to accepting a new position in Project Icon, an elite anti-terrorist organization. Stasia is also on the Boeing 767 and a member of the Vatican equivalent to Mac’s position.

The airliner is hijacked shortly out of Paris and flown to a remote island off Tunisia where they are met with armed militia, terrorist mercenaries, and something appearing to be biological weapons intended for a major attack against the Vatican. Stasia and Mac join forces to retake the plane, save the passengers and the Vatican, and live to fight another day.

Attention grabbing from the beginning, it is a fast-moving narrative, the characters evolve into real people, and the well-plotted story progresses with believable interaction between governmental agencies.

I thoroughly enjoyed this suspenseful, military thriller of an old hard-liner ex-Navy Seal that could have been 5 stars had it the opportunity of a good editor and eye for details. I got this book as a free download and enjoyed the easy escapist read. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quick, fun thriller.
