My Review:

Dr. Ruth Galloway is a forensic archeologist at the University of North Norfolk. Don’t ask me why, but I liked this protagonist almost immediately. She is in her late thirties, lives with her two cats on an ancient spit of land between sea and land on the Saltmarsh coast. She is very isolated and seems to love it, despite the almost daily miserable gray and stormy conditions battering her small cottage.

When she is asked to accompany DCI Nelson to a desolate area near the area where bones are found, he is hoping she can identify a missing child in his caseload. He is enormously magnetic and catches Ruth’s eye, but she can discern immediately that the bones are probably Iron Age. Still, there is another missing child and he’s back.

Ruth is an interesting MC, easy to invest in, and will no doubt be more deeply developed in succeeding installments. The support characters are developed only as far as need be, but the overwhelming star of the show is the area. The writing chills, planting horrendous scenic storms in the mind’s eye. The area is desolate, wet, cold, foreboding.

I loved the detailed description of the Saltmarsh, the Henge Circle, the old legends and ancient myths. Lots to learn, love that history.

“Herbs picked on St John’s Eve have special healing powers.”

“The past is dead. She, as an archaeologist, knows that better than most. But she knows too that it can be seductive.”

It’s dark, creepy, and the writer takes her time with divulging little nuances, secrets, clues. I suspected the ultimate perp, was right, but wanted to see how it all played out. Yeah, I’m hooked and apparently this series went on audiobooks, so I’ll be looking for those next.

Because it’s neither land nor sea, but something in-between, they saw it as a bridge to the afterlife; neither land nor sea, neither life nor death. In that moment, I saw Dr Ruth Galloway walking towards me out of the mist…

I live near Brighton with Andy. We have two grown-up children. I write in a garden shed accompanied by my cat, Gus.

Holly Swimsuit Mystery Book 5

My Review:

Oh my stars, I did it again—accepted another cozy mystery (yes, me), cleverly reeled in by the cover and the request by Holly Schwartz for Susie Black. This is that one, you know, with the unlikely protagonist, Holly Schlivnik. Nothing boring about Holly! She lives in a houseboat while being a President of Mermaid Swimwear. (Yes, and there are interesting bits of marketing strategy included.) She also has Siggie, the dog with all the answers, if you know how to interpret them appropriately.

Once again, dialogue can be refreshingly sharp, Holly doesn’t always apply a filter. Still, she seems to have that sixth sense in these matters, albeit at times difficult to grasp. Once again, she meets the Yentas daily, including Queenie Levine. Her bestie, Assistant Medical Examiner Sophia Cutler MD (also known as Snip) is good for a laugh.

Need I say there is a raft of remarkable support characters? This time the crew put their heads together to solve the mystery of the death of the department store Easter Bunny when Sue Ellen (aka the “Queen of Mean”) is arrested for the crime. Okay, granted she wasn’t exactly a favorite among the industry, but Sue Ellen? No way!

I did note in Book 4, Death by Cutting Table, the number of references to Nancy Drew. I didn’t see as much of that this time, but a new one popped up, “Thank the Goddess.” Where did that come from and why?

On the whole, I enjoy this wacky series, the main characters and those around her. The narrative generally stays on track, although there are some twists and red herrings, still some involvement in the romance interest this time, although she is reconsidering it. The novel moves with a good pace and is well plotted, and I always appreciate a good dog involved in the storyline. Additionally, there are always a few tidbits to learn.

My Review:

Quinn Fleming has been left with a traumatic brain injury from an attack that she recovered from physically. She is now fully functional and working at a florist shop. She’s been left with the inability to retain short-term memories, however. Having reconciled to this new self, she has learned to live with it by immediately writing notes to herself and she keeps a journal.

One evening as she was closing the shop and tossing trash in the dumpster behind the store, she realized she was not alone in the alley. She witnesses what she believes to be a murder, victim of foul play, and also knew if she didn’t write her observations immediately, they’d be lost to her by the time she could give a complete statement to the police.

Unfortunately, when the police arrive, they do not find a body nor evidence of an attack. She apparently has history with Detective Reyes, however, and Detective Reyes learned how to keep Quinn’s involvement in the moment and tease out details. The question was: were the perps aware there was a witness?

I must confess I’ve read many of the author’s books and jumped on this just seeing her name. I didn’t realize it was a standalone and quickly understood it was not one of my favorite FBI K-9 series. I recently read Lockdown, Book 3 of the NYPD Negotiators series and enjoyed it, but still, it’s hard to beat one of her FBI K-9 novels.

The storyline seemed a slow burn for me. There was a lot of dialogue between Quinn and the detective, explanation of her brain injury, description of the elaborate system of notes she’d made and kept for herself so she could function somewhat normally.

While I enjoy the intelligence of her narratives, I guess I’ve gotten used to more activity, faster pace. The main character is well developed and I marveled at the patience the detective employed in gleaning out the tiniest memory from Quinn, but at times it was also a bit exasperating. Good book, yeah.

Interesting, yeah.

Unique, okay.

If you are a solid diehard fan of the author, then you may appreciate the burn. I am a fan, but obviously chose my favs early on and color me a bit disappointed if there are no dogs involved.

I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

As mentioned last Sunday, day nine of the Covid infection, it was thought I might have lost several pounds. My son brought out his scale and discovered I had—ten pounds. He kept saying it looked like that, but was both a surprise and rather shocking to see him right. Loss of ten pounds in nine days? I knew I was getting weaker, but didn’t imagine. In the meantime, the CE lost…maybe eight? (He wasn’t sure.) And our son has now tested positive for it as well.

However, it’s been a long time since I could just lay around and read (or listen—when my eyes wouldn’t cooperate), and I’ve definitely chalked up a number of books. Both of the following were great reads and the first, The Blind Devotion of Imogene: The Misadventures of Imogene Taylor by David Putnam was an absolute hoot. The second, On Wahoo Reef, a Blacktip Island Novel, is the second in the series by Tim W Jackson. I read Blacktip Island back in October 2016 and loved it—unique plot, quirky well-developed characters.

The Blind Devotion of Imogene

Book Blurb:

In 1973, Imogene Taylor is seventy-five years old, on parole for murder, and works at a store that sells dented canned goods. Twelve years earlier, she went to prison for killing her love-of-her-life-husband, Wayne. She called it an accident. The judge and jury called it murder. Imogene’s parole agent is constantly on her case, looking to send her back to prison.

During her time in prison, Imogene had to vent her angst at someone and sent the sitting Presidents (during the ten years in prison) threatening letters bringing her to the attention of the Secret Service. The publisher, after being unable to contact Imogene, comes looking for her.

At the same time, Imogene’s neighbor dies of natural causes and leaves a hoarder’s mess to his daughter, Suzanne. Imogene helps Suz clear out a pyramid of boxes filled with junk in the garage. At the bottom of the pile, they find a box with a dead woman who has been hidden for many years.

Imogene must dodge an overzealous parole agent while dealing with a dead woman in the neighbor’s garage. She’s on parole for murder, so she can’t report it to the police. No one would believe her. Imogene and Suz think the woman in the box is Suz’s long-estranged mother. Rather than reveal Suz’s father as the probable killer, Imogene convinces Suz to bury her mom under the avocado tree in the backyard. Until Thelma, Suz’s mother, appears after reading the obituary.

It’s a race to uncover the real killer as Imogene dodges gangsters, family members, and a publisher on her quest to find the truth.

My Thoughts:

Oh my God. This whacked-out book…it’s a first for me.

A 75-year-old protagonist recently released from prison for killing her husband? (It was an accident!)

Imogene is out on parole working at Dentco. Yes, it sells dented goods, is situated in a less fortunate area of the city, and she has to stay on the good side of her parole officer for one more year—she needs this job! Something the parole officer is working very hard to keep from happening.

Imogene is one of those people who seem to attract mayhem. Trouble finds her no matter how innocent she is. Part of the problem stems from the time she spent in prison penning threatening letters to POTUS, eventually writing a book she called Peekaboo POTUS. It gets their attention and a coveted place on the “crazy” list.

Separate is the introduction to “The Cigar”, a local street thug bent on providing “protection” to those already struggling shop owners in the grimy strip center. Imogene has several friends, her next-door neighbor for one, and Ange, her erstwhile philosophical bunkmate in prison who still intrudes often into Imogene’s ear.

This thing may go over the top more than once, but it provides some hilarious scenes, quirky characters, outrageous dialogue, unexpected twists, and relief from laying in bed with the flu. 5 stars

My Thoughts:

It’s those thirties when many men take stock of their lives, bored, and don’t like what they see. But Wally Breight has given up his career, home in the US, and security to snap up a diving business on this Blacktip Island.

Typical of the author, he plunges his main character into hot water immediately when reality of the floundering business hits home. It’s not like even the boat is sea worthy, but he does manage to find two employees that skip soon as they’re paid for greener waters. The man is pathetically naïve and what money he brings to the business begins to sift through his fingers like…(um) water.

I love the characters! They are strange and unpredictable, the circumstances outrageous, the decisions…stupid less than well considered. What’s with this guy?

It’s pure escapism. Fun, simple, fast read, descriptions of the island almost have you packing for tropical climes (I said almost). Looking for something different, light-hearted, and twisty fun? Those who enjoy action, adventure, root for the underdog type tales, this is for you. 4.5 stars

My Review:

One of my favorite series and the one that has me planning a trip to Bar Harbor. (I’ll be looking for lobster.) Julia lives with her sister and mother where they annually set up a clambake with hungry customers ferried in on a set schedule.

In this installment, a friend of her mother went missing five years previous and has now been declared dead. There is to be a memorial service on the small island where she lived and is said to have gone missing following her routine afternoon swim. Something goes weird, however, when Julia’s mother, who has been declared executor of the will reunites with the group.

First, it doesn’t make sense that she was named executor as they had not been close in years. The will involves a complicated division of property and Jacqueline calls on Julia for help in going through everything and delivering what she can to the appropriate recipients.

In the meantime, there are twists and turns, the group with which Jacqueline was involved is quirky, harboring secrets, and obviously hiding clues to her friend’s disappearance as well as an earlier death deemed accidental—not. The storyline goes complicated with sub-stories.

As always, the characters come to life, the support characters both good and bad. There is a new boyfriend for which we’ll reserve judgment. It’s not the complex storyline delivered before as in Installment 9, Shucked Apart. Perhaps I missed the clambake on their Busman’s Harbor property. The mystery and suspense weren’t quite as strong this time.

Still, it’s a lovely series, entertaining, fun and fast read and I’m always looking for the next one.

His Review:

Discovering a body in an alley can be a very inconvenient event. Calling the police to report the event casts the net of suspicion over you. Sophie identified the body as belonging to Mr. Townsend.

His widow, eager to get his affairs in order and the will settled asked for an immediate release of the body and subsequent cremation! One day later the ashes were delivered back to the widow and the case closed!

Sophie was certain of her identification of the victim, but doubt was cast on her veracity. Is it possible the judge could have been misidentified? Cremated remains are hard to get identification from and so the will was in the process of being settled.

Sophie’s childhood sweetheart has become a Catholic priest and a confidant. Father Jack is trying to help her through this tough situation but there are too many sticking points. Will they be able to confirm the identity of the deceased even over the objections of the spouse who does not want probate to drag on? Read this book and enjoy the twists and turns. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

I always enjoyed the author’s wine country cozy mysteries, the last being The Vineyard Victims, and thought this time the CE might enjoy her book from a more serious series.

My Review:

It is with a lot of trepidation that Joe Talbert makes his way into the hospital room where Carl Iverson is located. He has been released from prison because he is dying of cancer.

Joe is the hapless twenty-year-old trying to go to college while working as a bar bouncer. He left town where his mother and eighteen-year-old brother live to escape the daily drama with his vitriolic, alcoholic mother. He is tightly connected to his autistic brother, Jeremy, who remains no older than a child and has limited verbal skills.

Joe finds himself coming up on due date for a biographical assignment for one of his classes and having no one close he can interview tries a nursing home thinking the residents would have lots of stories. He is eventually steered to Carl Iverson.

There are several layers in this well-plotted narrative. The story of Carl, a Vietnam veteran who lived next door to the young girl raped and murdered, and Joe, the young man who took on the responsibility of his brother. The loving care he provides his brother with such patience tears at the heart. The story of Jeremy’s autism and the struggle with both his mother and his mother’s offensive boyfriend is gripping.

Being torn in several directions, Joe’s school and the job he must keep to pay for it, the care of his brother a constant distraction, and the growing backstory of Carl is painful and beautiful at the same time. Your heart aches for Joe. Then there comes a light in his life—a new neighbor—who becomes a friend and then more. Lila has her own horrific backstory, is tender with Jeremy, patient, and understanding.

Joe discovers quickly that there may be much more to Carl’s story than initially received. The murder took place thirty years ago, the political climate so different; there are holes in the story, and then Virgil provides another view of Carl altogether. And Joe begins to suspect a wrongful conviction.

The author is an amazing storyteller. The complex plot is well-paced, the characters immensely empathetic, damaged, doing the best they can. And in the face of the odds, the best they can do is remarkable.

The narrator had an incredible novel to relate and he did so in spades—providing voices of the young man, the dying man, and the other characters—providing the anguish or the loathing where appropriate, ramping up the blood pressure or wheedling sympathy.

An engaging and soul-satisfying narrative read beautifully with just the right emotional level. Totally recommended.

My Review:

Intrigued with Book 1 a while ago, I then jumped into Books 2 and 3. So don’t ask me why this time I’d have jumped to Book 12—any rhyme or reason there? Then I discover it has a Valentine thread running behind it as is the next book I picked up, totally unaware it also has a Valentine thread. I wonder what the stars are trying to tell me? Should I have my cards read?

At least having gotten the beginning of the storyline and intro to the main characters, I can appreciate that Mitzy has relaxed a bit now with her newly acquired financial situation. She’s definitely a bit more confident if not still as clumsy, but enjoying her circumstances and the “new” family she’s inherited.

One new family member is step-brother Stellen. A youngster smitten with Yolo, he goes to a convention with Yolo where her pet aura photography invention goes awry with her fur baby inside. Obviously, the pet may be off in the ether somewhere and Stellen enlists the aid of Mitzy who also enlists the aid of Silas, an aging alchemist and Mitzy’s mentor.

But fixing the machine doesn’t solve all the problems as there is obviously a supernatural occurrence here that they failed to recognize and now realize it will get seriously more complicated when not only Pyewacket but her Ghost-ma also disappears.

Mitzy uses her growing sense of her paranormal sensibilities as well as those she gleans from Silas to work on returning Ghost-ma from an old enemy.

In the background is the blooming romance between her and Too Hot To Handle Sheriff Erik. You can’t fault her for the quick wit and willingness to share some of her riches where it will do the most good. She has no problem sharing. I enjoy the small quiet atmosphere of Pin Cherry Harbor and the inhabitants, going about their business rather oblivious to the paranormal maneuvering at the bookstore and her descriptive upstairs apartment. It’s magical, engaging, and very entertaining.
