My Review:

I borrowed this audiobook from my local library because of the author’s name with whom I was familiar having read and enjoyed previous books, the last a thriller, The 6:20 Man. This novel, however, is a far cry from the others. It’s a serious indictment of the time (1968) and place (Virginia), although certainly not a new story, nor unfortunately one that has appreciably changed since then.

Jack Lee, a white attorney, attempts to take on the defense of Jerome, a young black Vietnam War veteran in the killing of Jerome’s elderly white employers. The author wastes little time in developing his characters sympathetically and the reader almost immediately connects with both.

Jack has never before endeavored to take on such a sensational trial, much less one that will engender strong personal and political repercussions, including from his own family who raised him with a lack of overt prejudice and quickly realize he’s in way above his head and is in deep doo-do.

It is then that he is approached by Desiree DuBose, a Black lawyer from Chicago. She is well known for her expertise in the courtroom as well as her efforts in the fight for racial equality.

The novel crafts a thought-provoking, emotional legal thriller as well as a family drama. Steeped in historical perspective and well developed characters, the narrative deeply dives into the fight to protect and salvage their client as well as battle a corrupt and flawed justice system. If Jerome didn’t kill the elderly couple, who did?

The tension ratchets up throughout the storyline, often boiling over in heated controversial racial injustice arguments by Desiree. Both main characters are well developed and despite, or perhaps because of, an extreme difference in backgrounds appear to work well together. They begin to develop a grudging respect for each other.

The author pulls no punches in using malicious characters and the language, dialogue, and slurs reflect the time and place. It’s an intensive look back on an ugly system with an emotionally spirited plea in and between the lines to look at it again.

The Author’s Note will explain a lot of the decisions he made in the writing of this literary fiction effort which certainly takes a raw turn. It’s a hard read as well as lengthy, but take the time to read or listen to the informative explanation, which may answer your question.

My Review:

I’ve read a number of Oprah’s Book Club picks before. Sometimes she’s wrong.

This isn’t one of them.

I’m not sure whether I should sob uncontrollably or be angry. But then who would receive the wrath? The main character, Corby Ledbetter, or “the system”?

This is a book that will rip at your heart—first at the tragic beginning to the novel, or how it all ends?

I’m torn. Should I feel sorry for Corby? No. I just can’t.

First, it’s an intensive, insightful look at the heart of a man thrust into a role he’d never conceived of performing—that of stay-at-home-dad of twins after the loss of his ego-cementing job. When it is increasingly obvious that employment won’t come back easily, he begins to deal with his anxiety and growing depression first with doctor-prescribed narcotics, then self-enhanced by an increasing demand for a hard liquor kicker.

It is the pills and booze, along with a neighbor’s innocent distraction on a morning out of routine, that cause a disastrous accident. One that he’ll not recover from, nor his wife forgive. Even as I could see what was coming and cried out, I could not change the plot.

The grief is crushing. The prison is a new brutal reality, cruel, desperate. The narrative eases the reader into merciless prison life and follows Corby as he learns to cope with prison life. The characters are given such intensity the scene can fill the reader with dread or heart-pounding blood pressure.

The writing is alternately filled with compassion and empathy while at the same time painting a picture of deeply flawed characters, each seeking to survive another day. The author presents the staff in humanity (as in the librarian) and inhumanity (as in the prison guards), juxtaposed against each other. There is no time to catch a breath—you don’t have that luxury.

Corby alternately blames others and himself. An authentic story of friendship, grief, love, and forgiveness. But can a heinous act ever truly be forgiven, whether accidental or deliberate?

My first book by this author—it was heavy and one that has sticking power. Did you read it? Did it continue to nag at you?

My Review:

I do enjoy a good legal thriller from time to time. The last I read by this author, An Insignificant Case was a good standalone case in point. Unique main character and one I hoped would signal the beginning of a new series. Maybe not.

Defense Attorney Karen Wyatt definitely got herself in a pickle when she exposed corruption, not only in the police force, but the District Attorney’s office as well. She set herself up to take the fall, and fall she did, deep into prison. When she was finally exonerated, she came out with a bit of a chip on her shoulder and a burning desire to get some well-earned retribution.

The author keeps the tension ratcheted up as she goes about the business of practicing law and three years later taking pro bono cases. In the meantime, she continues to filter through her list of suspects, working to find the mole in the DA’s office. So much going on, the plot can get complex and there is a real mixed bag of characters from every spectrum.

All the twists and turns are there, moving the storyline along fairly briskly.

My Review:

I discovered the Andy Carpenter books just around installment 14 (2016) and have read or listened to most every succeeding book since. When The K Team splintered off of the Carpenter books, I started reading all those. So, yes, I’m a die-hard fan of David Rosenfelt, but it was surely the dogs in the Carpenter books that caught my attention.

Of course, if I found another series that Rosenfelt wrote, I dived into those. And, I hate to admit it, but his narrator for the Carpenter books, Grover Gardner, has in no small part cemented my love of the series, ergo, the author.

Still, although there is a sense of the signature wit and snark of Rosenfelt in his other series, it’s the Carpenter books that keep me coming back.

This particular time, I found Book 1 of the Doug Brock series (2016) (not sure there was ever a Doug Brock #4), and listened to it. Yes, I’d previously listened to both Books 2 and 3 back in 2020. Hey—they’re good. Short, well-paced, intelligent. A detective with a life-changing injury is left with amnesia but can’t help working on a case that was plaguing him before he got hurt.

The thing about Rosenfelt’s characters is that while they may not be wholly sympathetic, they are engaging. His plots look simple on the surface then submerge to layers of twists, turns, and red herrings and the chemistry between main character and support characters is electric with natural dialogue that conveys their emotional connection.

I enjoyed this book but I’ve been spoiled by Andy Carpenter. The narrator just slightly misses the mark for me as well. Okay, I’m just spoiled all around by the lawyer, his dogs, his support characters, and the narrator.

Apparently, you can’t beat that combination.

I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

If I thought I could clean up both the house and the yard in two weeks, I was sadly mistaken. Granted, I took on a lot more yard projects than I’d originally intended. (I’m one of those who’d rather work outside than in.) Clean a house, it just needs it again the next day or two. Fix up a veggie, flower bed, or fairy garden and it’s something you can enjoy for…maybe the whole summer?

I got my veggie garden all set, hopefully protected from bunnies, possums, and deer. Right now it’s looking a little rough with bird netting and chicken wire around everything, but give it a month. I’ve been cleaning up and doing some redesign in the fairy garden. Really wanted a little all-weather bench down there, but haven’t seen anything affordable so I decided to “make” a bench from the downed trees.

Trying to install a water barrel for the veggie bed, but can’t find proper fittings. The projects I bestowed on the CE are languishing in their original shipping boxes. Had hoped to have at least the kitchen ceiling fan light up in time for the escalating temps set to hit us next week. So, yes, will need more time, hopefully, to get to the house and those clean-up projects.

And it doesn’t help that we are trying to do the Y three times a week. The classes are only 45 minutes but with travel and then lunch and clean up, it ends up a good portion of the day, not to say that the classes don’t wear us out. Now they’ve added a summer challenge which we are going to try—adding one more class–yoga.

Yeah, I know—gluttons for punishment, huh?!

We did manage eight reviews along with a couple topical posts in May, and I’m mildly surprised it was that many with everything going on. The CE provided two and I managed four audiobooks (one for my new book club at the Y). I enjoyed two new authors and will be looking for more from both Alex Kava and Archer Sullivan. With those names, what are the odds they are women authors? (Apparently pretty good as both are.)

Santa Catalina is a world unto itself. “Twenty-six miles across the sea…” the island was a retreat for the Wrigley family and their casino. The casino was intended to be a retreat for the wealthy from southern California but a town was built and the island populated by the wealthy and their poorer caregivers.

Automobiles are not allowed on the island. Transportation is by foot or electric golf carts. This eliminates the gas and diesel fuel smoke so plentiful on the mainland. The rich can come and disappear on the island to many campgrounds and hiding spots.

The idyllic beauty and the island tranquility become background when a body is found bound in chains and weighted down in the bay. The body is distinctive by the purple streak in her hair. No way to deny foul play as she has obviously been killed and dumped at sea.

A sub-plot is introduced involving one of the island’s long residents. Protagonist Detective Stilwell has his hands full with both cases. He proves to be a determined and dogged investigator and will stop at nothing until he uncovers the secrets of both.

The story has many twists and turns as everyone seems innocent but someone must have tried to destroy evidence.

C E Williams This author shares many interesting detective techniques and methods for solving the killing. The machinations of the suspects and their attempts at providing alibi are intriguing and entertaining. Enjoy! 5 stars – CE Williams

My Review:

OMG, another dog series I’m just discovering and why hasn’t someone told me about this one?

The main character is a damaged Afghanistan ex-military person. In this case, Ryder Creed. He has teamed with Hannah and together they rescue and train dogs for all the different jobs that humans have discovered they can excel at. Many of the dogs are multi-service and their service is in demand.

Grace is a little Jack Russell Terrier and my favorite. JRs are a feisty, smart breed. She is one of the multi-service dogs, keenly aware of all the nuances of her handler, intelligent, and with a nose that knows. As Ryder says, “Grace is never wrong.”

In fact, there are several engaging characters, including Maggie O’Dell, who is apparently a character from another series by the author. An obvious romance link, though neither acknowledges the tension—fine by me—I’m not here for the romance.

Maggie is an FBI profiler but tends to play fast and loose in her position. She’s experienced and has enough history behind her to project authority.

There is a sub-level plot with lots of things going on, a mystery, well-developed and engaging characters, and a plot that is steeped in action if not description and explanation of the training and psyche of canines.

There is an escalation of body count which involves drug cartels and nasty people. The connection with Ryder and his dogs though is primo in this narrative and anyone who loves or is fascinated by their abilities will enjoy. It is also, however, a credible thriller with some human characters that this reader loved as well. The narrator did a fine job with the Southern accents and kept the pressure on.

I appreciated the ease into Book 1 of a new series which appears to be a spin off of a previously well received series and enjoyed it enough to go looking for Book 2. Look for Silent Creed soon.

I downloaded a copy of this audiobook from my local well-stocked library. These are my honest thoughts.

My Review:

It’s been a couple years since my last Alex Delaware book, The Ghost Orchid, as my last two reads by this author have included his son Jesse as co-author in the Clay Edison series. I was a little disappointed in the last Clay Edison, A Measure of Darkness, while I loved my last Alex Delaware book.

The Alex Delaware series always has three main characters: Alex, Milo, and the City of Los Angeles. Goodness, if anyone can make LA sound exciting, adventurous, and exotic, Kellerman can. His descriptions of the people and environs are atmospheric and always create a setting full of anticipation.

In this installment, they are involved in the murder and dumping of a young, aspiring actress. But of course that would only be the tip of the iceberg and soon there will be more bodies, both victim and perp.

Alex, as a main character, has been grandfathered in as a “volunteer” in the department (the series is that old), a partner to Milo, an official LA detective.

I don’t know if it was the narrator or the writing, but there has always been the sense that Alex is the intelligent one, though then the question would be how Milo made it this far. But he did seem more a ding-a-ling this time. Still, he is the one with the resources of the department while Alex provides cerebral input. Together, they are effective.

I’m still not sure where it went wrong for me this time. Yes, an audiobook; yes, I’m multi-tasking while listening; yes, there’s been another 90-degree flip in the storyline and now where am I? New characters, new case. Related? I guess so. Somehow, it became a bit of a blur for me, and there were short spaces of time I tuned out. Not good for an audiobook!

So, yeah, a little disappointed in Book 40 but looking forward to Book 41.
