This week I am highlighting Terri Reid, another terrific, prolific author who wrote Loose Ends, Mary O’Reilly Paranormal Mystery series book 1, which I reviewed on Goodreads. She has actually written twenty in this series, but has published additional series. This novel was self-published on August 1, 2010. She consistently runs approximately 4.0+ stars for any of her books sold on Amazon and her story is as fascinating as her books. She released book 20 of this series, Clear Expectations, on November 27, 2017.

Mary is hired to discover the truth behind the death. She unearths a connection between the murder and the disappearance of five little girls whose cases, twenty-four years later, are still all unsolved. As she digs further she becomes the next target for serial killers’ quest to tie up all his loose ends.

My Review:

Obviously, Terri Reid has a winner in her Mary O’Reilly paranormal series as she’s written 15 of them successfully. I can see why. I greatly enjoyed Mary with her ghostly characters popping in and out on her, although Bradley channeling through her might have stretched the imagination a bit much. Still, it’s a ghost story–who’s to know? (Only thing I didn’t enjoy was the formatting.)

A former crack Chicago cop up for detective, Mary is killed in the line of duty and resuscitated back to life with the ability to see ghosts who are drawn to her looking to help them move into the next dimension. Most are stuck between worlds because of an unnatural death.

Mary moves out of Chicago to small town Freeport to begin anew, where Bradley comes in as Chief of Police who is also creating a new rural life and has a secret of his own. Her best buds, Stanley and Rosie, provide great sub-characters that add dimension to the story as well as police chief Bradley, who is so contrary, he’ll end up a love interest. Mary is called on to help solve the mystery of the death of a senator’s lover whose ghost is now invading their reconciled lives and discovers it is chronologically related to the disappearance of five little girls.

The dialogue is snappy and sometimes humorous and there is plenty of interaction between characters in a plot that moves along nicely and keeps you reading. I was hooked with book 1 that kept to the paranormal mystery genre, but not so favorably with book 10 where it turned romancy, planning her wedding.

About the Author

(Amazon Author Page) Terri Reid has been telling ghosts stories since she was a toddler. Her mother tells of a time when two-year-old Terri would sit in her highchair, look past her mother into the dark back porch and say, “Look. Man.” When her mother would turn in horror, Terri would laugh delightedly.

Terri lives in the same area of the United States as her Mary O’Reilly character, Northwest Illinois. She lives on five acres of rolling land in a 100-year-old farmhouse, with her husband, children, dogs, cats and several dozen chickens (well, the chickens live in the barn.)

Her background is in marketing and public relations, but she has always enjoyed telling stories. For a while, she worked as a freelance journalist for the local paper and wrote the Halloween feature for many years, collecting as many local ghost stories as she could. She gave her collection of local ghost stories to the local historical society to use as a fundraiser, they are now in their third printing.

This week I am highlighting Dean C. Moore, another terrific, prolific author who wrote Terraforming Earth-Phase 2, which I reviewed on Goodreads. This is the second in a series of three, Phase 3, published March 2016. A cerebral author of mind-bending fiction (thank heaven and may it stay that way), he has actually written a number of books stretching across genres. This novel was published on October 11, 2015. He consistently runs approximately 4.5+ stars for any of his books sold on Amazon.

My Review:

In the FutureScape series, “Terraforming Earth-Phase 1-The Plagues Era,” Dean C Moore introduced us to the concept of the super wealthy and powerful conceiving the idea of reducing the earth’s over-population to their approved manageable and intellectual level. The resulting plagues fashioned to kill off millions of conceived lower level humans apparently touches off a maelstrom of opposition as well as empathetic factions further manipulating the weeding of the earth’s population into their own designs. In Phase 2 of “Terraforming Earth-The Humanoids in Sealed Habitats,” the world’s powerful entities form separate groups which then proceed with diabolical plans of their own as they stream remaining populations into seven domed complexes designed to further future strategies. Is it really possible to weed to the top 1%?

Armed with superior artificial intelligence, the four biggest warring factions, the Quality of Lifers, Digital Nirvana, STARS-R-US, and the Unwanteds all have separate and major objectives. The populations have evolved “chipheads” with more being actively and heavily recruited to further individual faction goals.

Luckily, our major protagonists (there are more than one), Rake Cunningham and “Doc” Holiday set up camp in an effort to counter-act extreme deadly advancements. Moore’s antagonists Garrett and his lover, the beautiful but extremely lethal Simone, revise their original goal to include the evolution of the “unkillable” human. Moore introduces us to myriad characters each managing survival, contributing some facet of continued, if harrowing, existence.

If Moore weaves the plot into something becoming terrifyingly realistic, it’s because we’ve begun to realize that the evolution of our human race has gone beyond wheels to flight into realms both unimaginable and horrifyingly possible. Technology beyond the capacity to even imagine yesterday in use today. And haven’t we always suspected there is someone or something out there besides us?

Once again, Dean C Moore envisions the future with da Vinci eyes and elaborates in shocking detail those scenes brought to incredible but terrifying reality through his pen.

My Review:

It’s amazing who you can become–given the right–or wrong circumstances. Sometimes, you can’t imagine how you’ve ever become this person. And having become a person you revile, can you ever quit and so back? Can you ever really “go home”? Would you want to?

This is the fourth in the 1929 series; the third I’ve read and this is definitely my favorite. Aryl is “found” by Richard Sloan, a missing persons cop who lucks onto Aryl looking for a serial cop killer. Sloan is a disgruntled, discontented Boston P.D. detective with a marriage teetering on the edge for a reason both partners are impotent to remedy. His record hasn’t been that good of late, finding more “missings” dead than alive; a day late, handing the file to homicide. He desperately hoped his last case, a 16-year-old, would be the reverse to the pattern. It wasn’t. Dejected, depressed, he decided he’d concentrate on the serial killer and counted on it to be his saving grace.

In the third of the 1929 series, Aryl Sullivan has been in a horrific explosion aboard his fishing vessel and barely survives with his body intact, never mind his mind. He has sustained major lacerations to his back which leaves him in severe pain in this installment. Unfortunately, he has no recollection what happened–only that he has been rescued and handed off eventually to land in London where he is then rescued by Gina who introduces him to Mickey. His injuries have left him dependent upon Gina who dishes him an elixir that quickly gets him hooked and leaves him no where to turn. Under his newly acquired circumstances, he becomes a man totally alien to his former self–capable of the unimaginable.

The tale unfolds after Sloan has picked him up from the French police where they both board a ship for the states. Together over the course of the cruise, each unloads his personal story as Aryl has slowly regained his memory and narrates the events of his past year. Aryl faces a shaky return. The experience has been life-changing for Sloan, however, and he makes several decisions both affecting his job and his marriage.

While the storyline borders on unique, there are edit problems that should have been addressed and it was a bit difficult to keep up with who was doing the current narrative since it switched back and forth between Sloan and Aryl. However, both have compelling histories or stories to tell (and they share with each other) and unfortunately for Aryl a long row to hoe before he can fully be brought back into the fold or the family. You have to swallow a few inaccuracies but on the whole, an interesting read and you do become sufficiently engaged in the characters to pursue the outcome.

This book was downloaded as a freebie by BookBub. Different in concept, the switch between the narrations garnered my imagination. Recommended reading–embrace the uncommon style.

My Review:

Mac Walker is returning to Washington DC after a well-earned vacation and prior to accepting a new position in Project Icon, an elite anti-terrorist organization. Stasia is also on the Boeing 767 and a member of the Vatican equivalent to Mac’s position.

The airliner is hijacked shortly out of Paris and flown to a remote island off Tunisia where they are met with armed militia, terrorist mercenaries, and something appearing to be biological weapons intended for a major attack against the Vatican. Stasia and Mac join forces to retake the plane, save the passengers and the Vatican, and live to fight another day.

Attention grabbing from the beginning, it is a fast-moving narrative, the characters evolve into real people, and the well-plotted story progresses with believable interaction between governmental agencies.

I thoroughly enjoyed this suspenseful, military thriller of an old hard-liner ex-Navy Seal that could have been 5 stars had it the opportunity of a good editor and eye for details. I got this book as a free download and enjoyed the easy escapist read. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quick, fun thriller.
