Ah, first love, now a thing of her past. Gabriel Wolfe was Beth’s first love and is now a successful writer who moved back to her rural community where she is married to Frank. Frank is a hard-working, caring, and devoted man who unfortunately bears the searing guilt of the loss of their son.

It’s also unfortunate that Gabriel has a son who is at the age that her son would have been, had he lived. She can’t help but be drawn to him. The problem that might foster, however, will weave an emotional, tension-filled storyline that grows with each chapter as it recreates that first love affair in a balancing act with the love she feels for Frank.

There is a split timeline, eloquently describing that earlier time with the present as secrets unravel a tale of tragedy and guilt and, ultimately, forgiveness.

The characters are fully developed, full of nuance, and the plot flows smoothly. The love triangle brought out a less attractive side of Beth and my sympathy went to Frank.

The characters feel real and as they share their stories of the past forty years, the narrative layers successes and losses, secrets and revelations. Daphne discovers the sudden absence of Eddie was not her fault..

It’s a lovely celebration of the memories and histories that shape us, the people who make a sincere and lasting impact, and that love never truly fades.

Nothing Ventured by Jeffrey Archer

I struggled with this one. Big time. Somehow the character of William Warwick just didn’t click with me. Warwick joins London’s Metropolitan Police Force instead of being a lawyer like papa.

Lucky or well connected, he starts his first big case in Scotland Yard’s arts and antiquities squad. A blessing really as he has an uncanny knowledge of fine art. What follows is a romp in the art world, which did interest me, and the world of forging and art traffickers. Goodness!

Throw in the romance and a light-hearted, fast-paced almost tongue-in-cheek police procedural and you have the making of a new series for the author.

While the world of art history and forgery kept my attention, it tended to seriously wane with the balance of the book, creating some implausible situations or threads not tied off. Not sure this is one for me although I understand the author has quite the history and fan base. You might well enjoy.

Surviving Savannah by Patti Callahan

Love it when I get into the history of these old ships! The Pulaski, then known as “the Titanic of the South,” sank off the coast of North Carolina in 1838. She was carrying some well-known and wealthy residents of Savannah. The novel is written with a dual timeline—1838 and the present.

Everly Winthrop is a curator and will help in the museum collection consisting of artifacts recovered from the sunken steamship. It’s been 180 years, but there are a lot of mysteries surrounding the sinking and the loss of so many passengers and crew.

Everly’s research uncovered a known survivor and her niece. Is it possible she can combine a human story to add to her curation of artifacts? The storylines of both timelines kept my interest, especially the older one with Augusta and Lily, the explosion and their survival in such detail it’ll have you gasping sea water.

I really enjoyed the details of the Pulaski and the stories of the women of the era. Everly is approached by Oliver, engaged to Mora when she died, a best friend of Everly who has not gotten over the accident that killed Mora and is deeply conflicted to be working with Oliver on the project, with whom she must admit attraction. The narrative is well paced and plotted, though once again, I could have done without the requisite romance, which side-tracked somewhat the main plot theme for me.

Whistler was released June 2, 2026; one of the other three in 2025, and the others are older.

His Review:

Growing up on an island has definite advantages and disadvantages. Knowing and relying upon all your neighbors is one advantage. Usually, the older boys and girls will make life difficult for the younger offspring. Pierce is one of those youngsters who is caught in the middle of the circle. The older kids beat up on him and his group mercilessly.

Islands near Newfoundland were great places to grow up in the latter half of the 20^th century, but cod have been harvested to near extinction and Pierce’s father fails to come home after a day fishing. He and his mother are marooned with few options. To earn spending money, the children are cutting the tongues out of Cod fish and selling them. The older kids want the money for themselves and steal or bully the kids and take the fish and tongues.

Anna is a budding young artist who is renowned for her excellent sketches and other artwork. She winds up missing and the entire island starts a search for her. She cannot be found. Pierce, his mother, and the middle-aged group set out to search for her. An elderly, reclusive man on the island is suspected of foul play. His habits spark suspicion among the young friends.

This tale is well-written and endearing. There are no dull moments and the reader is rewarded with an engaging and rewarding tome. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

This is, after all, Florida.

My Review:

What a breath of fresh air and a major hoot to boot! I love it when I can get my hands on a Dave Barry book. So much fun you can’t put it down. I also knew this one had to be shared with the CE, so his review is below.

SOOO much to write about, it’d be easy to give away too much, but by the blurb you already know it is about Jesse Braddock and her treasure discovery. She is living in a tiny Everglades cabin with egocentric Slater, a pretty boy who is the father to her infant daughter Willa. Not bad enough she is stuck here with Slater, but now he’s taken in a cohort, Kark, also not large on brains or abilities.

Meanwhile, Ken Bortle of Bortle Brothers Bait and Beer is busy hatching another hair-brained scheme to lure tourists to the long-since failed business he inherited with his brother, Brad. Only Dave Barry could develop these misfit characters as they concoct yet another fantastic idea to make their millions. The idea is so stupid, so idiotic, that it’s sure to get shut down immediately by their buddy Stu but it seems Stu likes the idea. Ken is going to attract tourists by making a video of the “Everglades Melon Monster” and they already have someone in mind to play the melon monster.

Now it gets even more complicated: There are the bad guys out in the swamp looking for treasure and even worse guys looking for Jesse who found it. Hey, it’s Florida, the Everglades, the swamp, wild boars, alligators. Barry knows how to heap on the absurd with satirical bits of side-splitting observations, LOL analogies, and dialogue dead on to the character; the characters so real you want to either give them a hug or kick some behind. It quickly goes from crazy to wild and dangerous and hilariously tongue-in-cheek.

“That’s Buddy,” said Skeeter. “He’s my emotional support boar.”

This is a book loaded with twists, unique atmospherics, and an outrageously imaginative plot. Engaging, entertaining, and totally recommended. LOVED IT! 5 stars

His Review:

Dumb and Dumber meet the Three Stooges in this slapstick adventure in the Florida Everglades. A struggling business; Bortle Brothers Bait and Beer is trying to drive business to their store. They devise a plan to create a viral video of a “swamp monster.”

Dave Barry is a classic writer who weaves average intellect with personal avarice and jealousy. Between enjoying various illegal substances and devising a script for their story, Ken’s prime motivator is cash flow. Almost losing the store, Ken and his cohorts decide there needs to be a swamp monster that is being investigated by them. The dialogue between these individuals is absolutely hilarious as well as idiotic. A few bucks is all that it takes to motivate the participants.

The plot thickens when a young beauty stumbles across some Civil War gold hidden in Everglades National Park. She is trying to dump the father of her child who turns out to be a real dirtbag. He has already blown through her inheritance and left her nearly barefoot and penniless.

Brad is another character. He is unable to put together a coherent thought when Jesse is around and has fallen head over heels for her. He helps with her daughter while she tries to get the treasure. She is not sure who she can trust.

The video goes viral with the first installment of the search for the swamp monster. I kept laughing as I waded through the antics of the head of the Department of the Interior, the local news agencies, and the instigators. Read and laugh along with this hilarious tale. 5 stars – CE Williams

Definitely a #nottobemissed novel releasing next year, currently on pre-order, and our recommendation for a book that is engaging and humorously entertaining.
